Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Cleared my skin w/in 3-4 months, however if you miss a pill or two you will see reverse action & it will take an increased amount of time in order return. I also used this medication w/ medicated face wash and differin gel as well as other topicals.

Cons:

Missed pills are shown greatly in breakouts within a week or two after. I do not believe the pills would have been as successfulf had I not been prescribed the other medicated topicals.

The drug does work on moderate to severe acne but you must most importantly be consistent. Also, if you are taking birth control while on this drug, it is VITAL you take them at opposite times of the day otherwise your birth control is of no value. I have heard many stories of acne returning after completion hence why I have been on Solodyn for a year now. It is evident to me when I miss a day that there are severe consequences. My face has never fully returned to the way it was before the medicine however it has been truly bad on a couple of occasions. Also, no side effects for myself on the good side.

Pros:

It actually works. Cleared up cystic acne within a week. Skin looking so much clearer. Skin close to flawless (still got scars though)

Cons:

My gums have gone dark, I've got discolouration on the side of my side. Apparently this is a side effect.

My acne was really bad. Every morning I'd wake up I'd find I had a new cyst on my head and a new pimple on my cheek. Once it started to go away another one would pop out. I used a lot of BP, calamine lotion, etc. Nothing worked! So I went to see my GP, he put me on this. I've been using it for 2 months now and it workes great. However, I am scared if I stop using it, will my acne return?

either way by the end of your 2-3 month treatment of this...youll wish u woulda jus started with accutane....and had 3 months down.

Pros:

Cleared up all my inflamed acne in 2days. Redness continues to disappear everyday! My skin feels amazing!

Cons:

Can't take this drug within 2 hours of eating. Inconvinient

Cleared up my facial acne fast. Used in combination with 2 topical gels (differin and duac)

Pros:

works ok in addition to other perscription topical medications

Cons:

not a real solution, acne will come back if you stop

works fairly well when using topicals, not a solution by itself, no drastic effects on acne, just helps a bit. although i didnt have it, apparently it can cause dramatic skin discoloration w/ scarring i do not use it anymore, just wasnt doing enough

Pros:

May have made a subtle difference, but it was hard to tell whether or not it was just in my head or the normal fluctuation in my complexion.

Cons:

I had never experienced extreme fatigue or physical depression until I started taking this drug. The symptoms did not go away until I took myself off of it. I was extremely sluggish, lost motivation, and walked around in a fog.

This drug is scary. Apparently what happened to me does not necessarily happen to everyone, but it does happen to some of us. It can cause lupus & discoloration of your skin (it made part of my lip a little purplish until I quit taking it). Be very careful - it is risky.

Pros:

No more breakouts
Skin is smoother

Cons:

Didn't really help with redness

It's working pretty well for me. I'm sticking with it. Hopefully my skin will clear up more with time.

Pros:

No acne!

Cons:

None for me.

I took this 2 and a half months before my skin cleared. Now it is clearer than it has ever been, for longer than ever. I only have 1 spot on my face whereas I used to have too many to count. I should mention that at the same time I began taking this I also cut out refined sugar from my diet completely, as well as white flour/rice/pasta, and cut right back on my dairy intake. I also found a skin-care regime I could be sure wasn't breaking me out.

Pros:

Cleared up everything, a real wonderdrug!

Cons:

Made me hella dizzy at first.

This is a godsend! It works within 2-4 days. My face, including those irritating persistent red blemishes that last forever, was cleared up. My naturally oily skin was supple. I had confidence again and looked flawless. I was hella dizzy to the point of not moving in the first two weeks, but that dulls after awhile. Downside: my GP didn't want me on it anymore after three months. It's not good to be prolonged on an antibiotic. Bye bye to confidence and clear skin, hello again to ugliness and zits!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
