Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Cons:

the first few weeks i used it i felt very dizzy and nausous within 10 minutes after taking it. i was also irritable. alsoo,,, it tests on animals.. but so does everyother presription. =X

it cleared up a bit of my acne... maybe. im not really sure. little to no improvement for me. and i have moderate acne. i dont like how you cant eat before or after either... it just seems inconveinent to take it.

Pros:

It helped to clear up my acne within the first week I took it

Cons:

It is difficult to find the time to take it if you are busy, like myself because you have to take it one hour before eating or 2-3 after eating.

I didn't have any side affects but I have some friends who felt dizzy and had nasea. If you have severe acne, I would recommend something else. But for those of us with the occasional breakouts on our face, this product will work for you

Pros:

skin is about 50 percent better

Cons:

only remembering to take it everyday

i was on this 4 months. didnt see any results until basically the 3rd or 4th month. this cleared my skin somewhat because my face used to be horrible, now its managable, but i still get breakouts. if you're insurance doesn't cover it, i wouldn't recommend trying it because its so expensive

Pros:

Have not had an inflammatory spot since starting Solodyn

Cons:

NONE that I can report.
It is expensive though. 499.00 for a 30 day supply. My insurance covers it. I would at least try it to see if it works and then try to get it covered.

I want to go out every night since my skin has cleared up. I saw results within two days. I still get small blemishes, but they are nothing compared to the inflamed monstrous things that ruin my weekends! I hope it continues to work. Still have to finish the 12 week regimen.

Pros:

None really yet

Cons:

it's much to slow working for how much I paid; cost

I think that I need something stronger. This is working much to slow. I wouldn;t get this if your borderline severe acne. I'm some what moderate and have seen little results.

Pros:

Not sure yet... still tracking progress

Cons:

Hmmm, still not sure...

I don't know if my symptoms are of a weather change or they are from minocyline. I just started taking it 9/18/07. So far i've had a constant headache, my face feel's like it's on fire in the slightest bit of sunlight, and i run a constant fever... No sign of whether it is clearning my face up... Just wanted to drop a line. I hope people respond to this because this forum is a very good thing for people trying to make an educated decision on which medication(s) to try...

Pros:

It cleared up my skin.

Cons:

Caused lower abdominal pain, extreme fatigue

Too bad I can't take this stuff. It didn't make me nauseous which is the no. 1 complaint but it sent my body completely out of wack! I seriously thought I had liver disease or something then I'm like duh! it's the pills. No more Minocycline for this girl!

Pros:

Didn't experience any side effects

Cons:

Done absolutely nothing for my skin.

I have tried Minocycline and Doxycycline and neither one seemed to do anything for my acne. Within the past couple of months my acne has flaired up when before I had the occasional pimple. Was put on these antibiotics but nothing seems to works. Now I'm trying laser treatments which are costing me $200 a week and praying this will be my answer.

Pros:

cleared up all of my acne within a month, back, chest, and face.

Cons:

after using it about four diferent times my body got used to it, and it wouldn't work anymore.also gives you upset stomach and diarreah.

It cleared up all my acne within a month, but because it's a antibiotic you have drink a least 6 to seven full size glasses or bottles of water so that it can get into you're system or it won't work.

Pros:

No side effects

Cons:

No improvements

Too expensive and it worth it

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
