Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Clear'd up my skin better than anything I have tried. I used it in combination with Benzoyl Peroxide and AHA+. Cleared up my skin to about 95%!

Cons:

Nothing really other than minor sunlight sensitivity, I went to Cuba while on it just loaded up on sunscreen.. Still got brown :) and as others have mentioned you easily bruise. and lastly slight fatigue when you first start taking the pills...

I've used Minocycline for about 7 months now started on 100mg once a day and increased to 100mg twice a day and than it started working. The only thing I noticed is that i was off it for about a month and I noticed I started to break out again.. Im back on it now for another 3 months now, hopefully it will last when I go off it this time!! Lastly it is pricey in Canada, I got 3 months worth of pills for $225 dollars, so if your young and your parents dont have a healthcare plan, save your nickles and dimes kids.

Pros:

Began to get rid of the cysts and smaller acne around my face and chin area. Was working quite well.

Cons:

After about a week, I broke out into small hives on my arms, legs, and chest. Derm said stop for 4 days, then retake the pills to see if it was the mino. Sure enough, after 2 pills, the hives were back. I am now on Bactrim, and it is my first day.

It works great if you aren't allergic to it. I was seeing my acne dissolve, but had to stop due to hives. Overall, it works wonders if able to take safely.

Pros:

it works but it takes time. so still stick it out.

Cons:

price and side effects.

i was wondering when to stop taking this med though......because i've been on this for almost two months now.

Pros:

It improved my acne... somewhat

Cons:

It didn't eliminate it

It's not worth the co-pay with my insurance. It didn't improve my acne any more than (cheap) drugstore topical treatments.

Pros:

Clears up facial and body acne. Took about 2 or 3 months to see improvement. Covered by insurance.

Cons:

GAVE ME MELASMA!!! Post inflammation pigmentation on my forehead and melasma on my upperlip and top of forehead.

Will never take antibiotic long term again. Melasma is very hard to treat and once you get it - you wish you were dealing with the acne again. Please be careful with long term antibiotics - they can cause long term issues and many doctors just write out RX's without informing us of side effects.

Pros:

Clears you up, pretty fast. It really works well

Cons:

Well, I broke out in HIVES and was bedridden for weeks. It was the worst two weeks of my life and I had to get hospitalized and my throat closed up and everything. Not fun. But it got rid of my acne fast. Your chocie

Take a small dose and wait 2 weeks. If you dont get an allergic reaction, drug yourself up because it makes acne disapeer

Pros:

None. Horrible.

Cons:

Broke out in rash. Horrible headaches and neck pain. Drying.

This stuff was horrible!!!! I was prescribed Solodyn for adult acne. I was hesitant to take it in the first place because I tend to have reactions to antibiotics. About 12 days into it I broke out in a rash all over my chest and neck. Little red bumps, but they didn't itch. I quit taking it. The next day I had the worst headache of my life that lasted for two days. I also had horrible neck pain and weird chest tightening! Now that I have been off of it one week the rash came back and it itches like crazy!!!! It did not clear up my face either...it made it worse. I had deep painful acne that I had never had before along my chin. My face looks better since I quit taking it. I use clenia wash and emollient cream only. It works. Stay away from Solodyn!!!!!

Pros:

My cystic acne is gone!

Cons:

Half the time I feel sick to my stomach! Constipation. Vomiting.

I've been on it for 4 weeks. It did it's job and now I'm stopping it so I can get back to normal. I also started birth control pills again, which always helps. FYI Retin A micro works if you use it every night. photofacials work too! Thanks for the help. All your advice has been helpful!

Pros:

I used this for about 2 months and saw significant drops in outbreaks. I used in combination with benzyl Peroxide 8% washing face in morning and night and also using differen at night.

Cons:

Face was and is still red and dryed out. Once I stopped taking this pill 4 days ago now I have breakouts all over my face :( Was hoping I could just stop and maintain the results but apparently not. Also It did make me feel like crap most the time./

Worth a try but with all the noted side effects it comes down to personal opinion and how your body responds

Pros:

Cleared my face up but not by much

Cons:

Caused me to break out in HIVES for 2 weeks. Worst 2 weeks of my life. Not worth it.

Dont take it

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
