Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

completely cleared up my moderate/severe acne breakout from Retin A--my skin is completely clear and smooth!!!! i can't believe this!!!

Cons:

slight headaches, joint discomfort

i have used minocycline in the past but have discontinued it once my skin had cleared. i recently went on Retin A .025 cream for about three months and it completely destroyed my face--i had moderate acne before the Retin A and had severe acne after using it and going through the awful initial breakout. i am now using minocycline 100 mg along with Obagi's clenziderm for dry/normal skin and it has COMPLETELY cleared my skin. it took two weeks for complete results but i couldnt recommend minocycline more to anyone!

Pros:

Redness reduction. No cystic breakouts. Breakouts smaller in general.

Cons:

Hard to tell if its working. Expensive w/o discount card. Im pretty sure it purges your skin at first.

Ive have taken 90mg tabs every day for a month. I think that b/c its an antibiotic, it purges the skin in an effort to rid it of bacteria. Im also on finacea, and i think that it helps more. My skin has improved a little since using it. Give it shot, but all it is is a time release antibiotic, and I have noticed no difference between it and normal doxy or tetracycline. Alright, off to refill my prescription with my fingers crossed.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Took one pill and it made me so nauseated, till I just couldn't bear to take it again.

Pill antibiotics really can tear up the lining of one's stomach. So, definitely beware when using them! For me personally, I don't plan to ever take antibiotics again for acne. As, it just isn't worth it. I would rather go with using topical products instead for long-term treatment.

Pros:

it seemed to slightly work

Cons:

none really. it doesnt work that great.

Its ok. it seemed to clear my face up a very very little bit. then i switched to 2x a day minocycline and that didnt do anything at all. so basically theres better pills out there.

Pros:

I've been on "the pill" for my acne and that cut my acne in half. But just recently i thought i'd get my prescription filled for this and take it WITH the pill. It cleared up the other half of my acne so now I'm basically acne free!

Cons:

itchy face. feeling dizzy at random moments...

it works?!

Pros:

cleared up in about a week after using

Cons:

can be expensive but i paid 25 dollars
after not using it for 10 days i broke out within the first 2 days

its a great medicine for moderate acne, not for cysts

Pros:

My skin cleared up like magic within 2-3 weeks.

Cons:

side effects: sensitive to sunlite, toenails are turning purple, dark patches on my skin that won't fade (almost a year later), horrible headaches, stiffness in my hands, and now my hair is falling out.

Mino works amazingly well. My skin was so great after the first 4 month course, I thought I was set - but as soon as I stopped taking it the cystic acne came back. I'm now on month 3 of another 4 month course and the side effects are showing up - I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE WHAT WAS GOING ON UNTIL I READ OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCES HERE. The dark toenails - I thought I'd banged my toe, the stiff fingers/joints - I thought I was developing RA or just getting old, the violent headaches - random, and went away after a month so I never connected it to the mino, the dark patches on the skin - I knew that could happen, but figured it was worth it for good skin. Now my hair is starting to fall out - I'm done. I'm going to have to find something else. I'm really upset becase it worked so well and I'm terrified to go back to having acne again. But the side effects are too much and I know after a year of taking it they get worse. Not worth purple teeth. But if you don't get side effects - it's awesome.

Pros:

keeps my acne at bay!

Cons:

it makes me very dizzy. i've learned to live with it though. it's worth it.

without this drug, i'd be a mess. i've taken 100 mg 2x a day for over 5 years. i hate to be dependant on this, but i feel as if i have no choice. my acne is moderate to light (depending on the time of the month!) thanks to minocin.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
