Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

N/A

Cons:

I got better results from an over-the-counter, off brand acne cream than this. My acne was never this bad. If anything, this medicine aggravated my skin and made it worse, especially on my back and side of my face where I hardly get acne!

I know everyone has different results, but this product is NOT for me. I'd rather go back to the cheap acne cream that makes my face red and itchy for a couple hours than this. I feel even more self concious than ever.

Pros:

Easy to take, no side effects besides photosensitivity. Seems to be helping clear it up a little, raken it for about 3 weeks.

Cons:

Not many results, next step is accutane.

May work well for many people, especially young people.

Pros:

clears acne :)

Cons:

None.

been using for 6 weeks And I have Used Alot, it works!
April 13, 2009

Pros:

Only thing that helped clear my skin! Very very few new pimples since I started using.

Cons:

After using for about 1.5 months, I started getting REALLY sleepy/tired after taking meds, so I just take it once a day now at nights.

I have insurance so it was cheap for me, if not it would be expensive. It cleared up my skin very nicely without overdrying (I have oily skin though, so I don't know about people with dry skin) However since this is an anti-biotic, this is NOT a long term solution

Pros:

Within four days, minocycline has alleviated the pain associated with cystic acne. So, in a sense, it is working. Unlike other users, I have not experienced any side effects, as yet.

Most general practitioners would combine this with a topical acne treatment to aid in the recovery of the skin. I've been prescribed ClindaTech, manufactured by DermaTech Laboratories. It's Clindamycin solution of up to 1% w/v concentration. Combined as a treatment, I know that it's still early days, but the raised inflammations have decreased dramatically. Even though, by just looking at it, the acne is still present in a severe form. However, I am optimistic that everything will clear by the end of the first half of the year.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
