Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Well, i dont think there were cons. My skin became much more oily and therefore my acne got much woese in the time I was on it but I dont think this was related to the drug.

Doesnt do much if your skin is just too oily. Maybe it will work better if your acne is more of thr inflamitory type.

Pros:

50MG CLEARS UP BACKACNE INSURANCE COULD COVER

Cons:

ONCE YOU STOP TAKING THE PILLS THE ACNE COMES BACK

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO STICK TO THE PILL TAKING IT'S GREAT HOWEVER I'VE NOTICED THAT IT ONLY CLEARS UP MY BACK NOT MY FACE. BUT I'M STILL HAPPY.

Pros:

I was prescribed this for deep cystic acne and it took about a month for it to kick in but was highly effective once it did.

Cons:

You're not supposed to take it with vitamins or calcium so I had to be careful what I ate around the time I took it to make sure the breakouts wouldn't come back.

Great stuff. Definitely worked for me.

Pros:

No sides effects for me whatsoever, worked quickly, saw improvement within a week

Cons:

Have to watch when in the day you take it and with what

I had been on this before, however, it had stopped working - or so I thought, so I ceased taking it. The last prescription I filled, had a label on it that the other jars never had - stating YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS MEDICAL WITH MULTIVITAMINS, CALCIUM or IRON... ummmmm, because I'm on Depo I take HUGE quantities of Calcium - and since I don't want to be popping pills all day, I would take this med with my vitamins and calcium - according to the pharmacist - this med binds with the calcium and renders it ineffective, which would explain why it "stopped working"... not on it again, very happy, take my multivitamins and such at dinner, and 100mg of minocycline at bed.

Pros:

works very well for me and clears us most acne

Cons:

only con is that once you stop taking drug the acne returns. No side effects

Bottom Line. As u can see from all the comments, individual results can vary. Try topical treatments first, but if all else fails like it did for me, try the oral medication and see how well it works for you!

Pros:

It works for me with another medication.

Cons:

A little dizzy with headaches.

It worked for me with SPIRONOLACTO ( which helps with hormones) Together they helped my face clear up and no new breakouts. I used to have those painful cystic ones so I'm glad they are gone. Now if I only knew how to get rid of these deep scars. Oh and It really bugs me when people write a review after 2 days. Give it time before you influence people on here.

Pros:

Has worked really well for me when paired with differin cream :o). I had very light acne on my chin, shoulders, and back and everything is about cleared up after about a month of taking this twice daily.

Cons:

I've had no side effects, so I don't really have much against this medication.

Good for people with light to moderate acne. I would suggest Accutane for anything severe, and I'm sure a dermatologist would, as well. I've tried tons of things for my face, i.e: ProActiv, the Clinique system, several scrubs, etc, and this has been working perfectly for me!

Pros:

NONE. Does not clear acne, blemishes, zits, etc.

Cons:

Makes you hella tired, false hope, makes you feel SICK, dellusional and depressed, INCONVENIENT (must eat 2-3 hours after or 1 hour before taking), detrimental body effects overall...WASTE OF TIME

False hope. Tried tetracycline first. Neither worked. Minocycline made me sick, I had to schedule my eating times around it just so I could get the optimum results (which were none). WORSE PART is they made the sclera of my eye look pigmented/yellowish/not normal, made me break out in hives on my legs after a few months, and were a WASTE of TIME. I stopped taking them a while ago but I don't kno if it will help my eyes since taking any antibiotics for a prolonged period is never heatlhy. But I was desperate....

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
