Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

None

Cons:

It doesn't work at all, it actually makes your face worse....

Don't use it... no difference

Pros:

I could tell that it was doing its job in reducing my acne cysts.

Cons:

I experienced confusion and I had a very hard time focusing on topics that I normally could focus on (e.g. studying). My acne also did not just disappear. There was still noticeable acne, just less of it.

The negative side effects outweigh the slight skin improvement.

Pros:

I used 50 mg twice a day for three months for my moderate acne. After two weeks, my skin was completely cleared. It works while you're on it.

Cons:

I stopped after three months and within two weeks it came back. I am back on my regular dosage now, for three more months. Doc told me to experiment with dosage.

Great medicine while you're on it -- it works. However, it masks the symptoms. For moderate acne, it's been helpful; for more serious, I'd try something else.

Pros:

It worked the first two weeks I was on it.

Cons:

Stopped working after about two-three weeks. Dizzy, stomach aches, headaches, etc.

I've been taking this for about a month now and I'm not impressed. It cleared up my acne the first two-three weeks but now I have small red bumps everywhere with pimples popping up here and there. I certainly do not want to take this forever . . . I've called my doc to see what he recommends.

Pros:

I've only used it for a day and a half and it has made it a little better.

Cons:

Makes me feel sooo sick to my stomach. Can't eat anything for an hour or so after taking it.

It really works for me. I've been taking it for a day and a half for acne on my chest & shoulders where it is the worst. I have very mild acne on my face, so it's not really a problem there. The stuff on my shoulders doesn't hurt nearly as much. It's not as red, either. It makes me sick to my stomach if I eat anything after taking it, which is weird because most people are sick if they take it on an empty stomach. Nothing else, though. Just the nausea. I'm only on it for 2 weeks and I have a topical solution to use also, so I'm hoping this will work. I'm 13 and my mom was worried about scarring from the stuff on my chest, so my doctor put me on it. I'm crossing my fingers. Nothing else has worked.

Pros:

It cleared up my acne in like 4 days and I was clear for a full month

Cons:

I'm on my 6th week and my acne came back a few days ago but it's fading now

The Doc said to wait 6 weeks for it to take full effect so i'm hoping after this week I won't have any zits. I take it once a day with Retin-A at night

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

It made my skin much worse.

I had such high hopes for this medication as it was the first time I had gone to the dermatologist and been prescribed something. Before this I had always tried over the counter stuff. I was taking 100 mg dosage and it made my skin horrible. I went from having bad skin to the worst skin I have ever had. The pimples that formed were HUGE and I still have scars. I was on it for two months, hoping it would get better, but it only got worse, until finally I stopped the medication.

Pros:

Works fairly well.

Cons:

No Dairy products within 2 hours and doesn't show it's effectiveness quickly. When I say "quickly", I mean after two months of use.

I've been taking this for 2 months now and have seen SOME results. I still get "bad" days, but haven't really seen "good" days. So, in a week or so I'm going to see a dermatologist for the first time and see if I could up the dosage or do something else. I expected that the results be somewhat more noticeable after two months.

Pros:

Cleared up all the pimples on my chin, where my acne was the worst.

Cons:

I still have pimples everywhere else.

Everyone seems to be taking it different to me.. I've been taking it twice a day with food for about 3 months and i was told not to lie down for an hour after taking it to reduce the likeihood of headaches (which i haven't had). Towards the end of the first month i really noticed the difference in my chin it's pretty much clear now which i'm pretty happy with. But it hasn't helped clear up any other areas of my face.. maybe a few less blackheads, but thats all.

Pros:

Stoped acne from flaring up as much.

Cons:

I took this for a long time(about 6- 8 months) i took 2 a day which appears to be too much compared to the other reviews. Towards the end of the use it did not effect my ance at all and i developed a yeast infection in my genital area.

maybe works for about a month or two but after that not worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
