Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Really helped to clear up mild-modertae acne within 1 month. Began working within 2 weeks and is quite effective so far.

Cons:

Never take this pill on an empty stomach, it will make you sick. Occasionally my eyes ache when I am out in the sun.

This drug actually worked for me after I have tried a handful of other antibiotics. Take the pill for 2 weeks regularly and see what happens. I was very skeptical at first because I had tried other antibiotics with no real effect but I believe that this pill is different.

Pros:

I took this for 3 months and after a month nearly all of my spots were gone.

Cons:

After three months i started to get severe joint pain (cant hardly walk), tierdness, lack of appetite and liver malfunction. I have now been diagnosed with the auto immune disease Lupus. Caused by taking Minocycline.

DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG! I would not recommend this medication to anyone. The side affects are too risky and my docter did not tell me anything about the side affects when she prescribed it to me. Lupus is a serious disease and I would much prefer to have acne. The Lupus symptoms can take up to a year to go after stopping taking the Minocycline. SO BEWARE its not worth it.

Pros:

worked well in the beginning.

Cons:

it took about 6 weeks til it started working, then after six months maybe, it didnt work anymore. when i stopped taking it, my acne was still bad, but no worse.

works til you get used to it. oh yeah, and it only worked when it made me throw up every morning. as soon as it stopped bothering my stomach, it was no longer helping. some people it seems to help more long term though, so give it a try.

Pros:

skin very soft, acne almost all gone just lots of small marks left.

Cons:

even though ive only got mild acne, i still get one or two spots at least once a week. They are only small and go away in three days but still annoying.

Ive been on this for about 6 weeks and for the first few weeks nothing happened which really upset me. I didn't realise i'd have to be patient because i'd read other reviews that said acne had cleared up in days. Its now really clear with just marks left but i really hope it will continue to work until my face is completely clear.

Pros:

Kept face semi clear of acne.

Cons:

Severe Dizziness.
Nausea.
Vertigo. Fatigued Feeling. Sun Sensitivty

Seems to work okay, but I had a horrible experience twice. The first time was when my doctor told me to double the dose I was taking. After I did the next day I seemed to get very dizzy followed by vomiting. This lasted for 2 days. A year later I tried to go back on the "mino" and the same thing happend.

Pros:

i was on minocycline for almost a year. after the first two months my face was totally clear, and stayed that way. i thought it was a miracle!

Cons:

two months afteri went off the drug my skin looked worse than it ever had before. it was the first time i had ever gotten cystic acne. i'm now undergoing my second round of treatment with it, been on it for two months with no real results.

don't take it unless you want to be on antibiotics for the rest of your life.

Pros:

None at all..

Cons:

I didnt do anything for me I took about refills and it seemed to make it worse.

I eat extremely healthy everyday no junk food and not much alcohol. I also hit the steam room everyday and take a show immediatly after and my back still broke out with Minocycline. I am now tryin Doxycyline to see if any changes

Pros:

My skin seems to be slowly clearing up.

Cons:

I get super dizzy, and light headed. I feel like I am in a fog.

I'm not sure about this at all, I think i might go off it. I think having a healthy body and feeling well is more important than a my acne. Perhaps a hormone level check with my doctor is what is need.

Pros:

None. Do not use this Drug. Its not worth it.

Cons:

Avoid this Drug at all costs. I took this product for only a few days when My body broke out in Hives! I have Red, Extremely itchy, and swollen areas all over my body. My feet and wrists are very swollen. The itching is unbarable.

On day one my left eye swelled up to the point that my eye was only half open. And on Day 2 my left eye was almost all better but then my Right eye swelled up. Having acne all over is better then having Hives. I promise its just not worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
