Pros:

It works in less than 3 days...you will start seeing results

Cons:

It can bleach your clothes and sheets

I loooove this stuff. I was skeptical at first when my doctor prescribed it bacause i didn't like the fact you have to remember to keep it refrigerated but later on I find that to be the appealing part because when you use it...it's coolness is soothing. I saw results 3 days after using it...stopped wearing makeup completely and I also use it on my chest and back...people always stop me and tell me how beautiful my skin is...that hasn't happenend in a loooong time...I feel so pretty...my skin is spotless...no Lie!!!! I will reccomend this to anyone...I have noticed upon first using it that it can be very drying but I started using a cream cleanser to cleanse my skin instead of a soap of any kind and the drying stopped and i also use ponds moisturizing cream to moisterize so i didn't have that problem anymore...and let me tell you that I have not broken out since using this stuff...I don't even have to be that conscience about putting my hands on my face thinking I'll break...use it!!!!

Pros:

This was the best topical I ever used, until it was discontinued in the UK (why i'll never know). It consistently kept my skin clear

Cons:

There might have been a bit of dryness, but not much at all. It also has a strange consistency and it has to be mixed but thats it really.

The best topical. Left wondering what else there is that will be as good as this.

Pros:

Prescribed the gel version. Seems to start working within days. Reduces redness and inflammation of cystic lesions quickly, although these lesions are still very slow to heal. Starts working faster than other products I have tried.

Cons:

Extreme dryness and flaking skin where bad breakouts are. I learned to use Cetaphil moisturizer immediately after washing, then wait 30 min before applying gel, then apply more moisturizer if necessary. That seems to almost eliminate the flaking.

I am 26 and have suffered from acne my whole life. I had it under control for the last few years. Then I went through a painful divorce and got off birth control and my face erupted, worse than it has in my life. Huge cystic lesions that have hung around for 6 weeks. I tried Proactiv again for about 8 weeks without much improvement. My doctor gave me Benzamycin and I started seeing improvement within about 3 days. The cysts started flattening a bit and redness started going down some. I have been on it 2 weeks now and my skin is still breaking out, and still getting inflamed, but it is definitely better. There seem to be less new breakouts and the redness is slowly decreasing, and the nodules are flattening out some. I'm going to give this a few more weeks. I am suffering emotionally and don't want to leave my house right now, but I know you really need to give a medication at least 1-2 months to work. I started the birth control again 2 months ago and am hoping it helps too.

Pros:

finally, something effective for ALL acne types

Cons:

it dries the skin, leaving the most acne prone areas a bit flakey, and the white residue can leave skin feeling a bit dirty.

the cons are a pain, but moisturizer used after the application of the gell helps with the flaking, and i'm assuming that after i use it a bit longer, this side effect will get better. i recently had a baby, which threw my hormones out of whack, and my face, particularly my jawline, completely erupted, and i felt 15 all over again...not in a good way, mind. so, i talked to my doc, and have been using this for a few weeks. it's really taken the worst of the acne away, though some of the cysts are stubborn, so i recommend patience. i started seeing real results after a few days, and each day is better than the last. that says soooo much more than any other meds i've ever tried. my insurance covered it, leaving me to pay a small amount, so check out your coverage, talk to your doc, and give it a try.

Pros:

It works very quickly and amazed my Doctor after 10 years of unsuccessful treatment.

Cons:

Has to be stored in a fridge.

I haven't been able to get a new supply and my face has erupted. I had get used to having no acne and so hope they start manufacturing again for the UK.

Pros:

Worked great for me, saw good results in a week.

Cons:

White film left on face after it dries.

Little bit pricey but worth it, comparing with trying all other stuff on the market that don't work. I'm currently abroad and can't find it in this country, but I will definitely buy it when I return to NY.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
