Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

We'll see! :)

Cons:

Little bit queasy after I take the pill, but thats to be expected. Otherwise, no cons so far.

This anti-biotic is mainly suppose to help people who have a particular STAPH INFECTION. I went in to see my doctor because at 23 yrs old I had a sudden horrible breakout of cystic acne all over my chin, jawline and cheeks (literally, about 9 pimples formed within three hours and it was PAINFUL). I thought something was wrong with me, but I kept using proactive as usual until my skin so so flaky and bumpy I went into depression. Anyway, my doctor looked at my skin and told me it was a skin infection, NOT regular adult acne. I was so happy that I was able to find a name for this. She perscribed my Doxy and informed me that it will help take away the bacteria/infection that I must have picked up from the gym or other public place. I have only been on it for a coouple days and I cannot wait to see the results. Remember, DOXY MAY ONLY WORK FOR PEOPLE WITH AN ACTUAL SKIN INFECTION. I have accepted my skin for now and learned so much about true inner beauty. Best wishes to yo

Pros:

Makes your skin feel really soft. Stopped deep, painful acne.

Cons:

Didn't clear up acne. Makes throat feel sore and tight. Upset stomach if no food in system.

I'm 22 and have had cystic acne pretty bad for the last year. I was told by my doctor that I should notice full results in 2 months. Well, it's been 2 months, and I guess it's a little better but not much. It seems that the pimples aren't as deep, but the ones I already have are not going anywhere. You're not supposed to eat with it as having calcium in your system will mess with the absorption, but you get a really queasy stomach if you don't have food in your system. It always made my throat feel slightly sore, and then as if I had a lump in it. Turns out that's a common system. Switched my BC to Yaz a week ago and it's clearing everything up.

Pros:

It helped minimize the pimples but not completely clear them, although i'm still waiting for the full effect, also on erythromycin which helps but can dry out skin sometimes.

Cons:

i dont know if its because of the medicine, but i know have mild scarring so i've been using retrinal which is helping.

i would try it. it helps and if you have mild acne it is worth a shot

Pros:

It seems to dry thing up well.

Cons:

Takes awhile to begin working.
Must drink with lots of water.
Don't take it in the morning without eating some type of food or you will feel awful

I have been on this and duac gel for 6 weeks now. The doctor says it will take 8-12 weeks until I see full results. I can see an improvement but not a full improvement yet.

Pros:

Meh

Cons:

Full of sketchy chemicals, ineffective.

This seemed to only exacerbate things, and might have given me a bit of bacne as well. I've never had bacne before, and since taking this I've had cysts all over the place. I'm not quite sure why that would happen, but hey.

Pros:

Clears up skin really good. Takes a little bit to see a difference, but in the end it is worth it.

Cons:

Nauseating at times. Usually when I take my morning pill.

I have suffered from acne for a year, and it was really depressing and upsetting. Couldn't even look at people in the eye. Anyway, the product is really great. I saw a difference within a few weeks. It's not 100% better, but I would say about 35% better. The cysts I had are now softer, and what seems to be healing. Really excited for what is to come. Don't give up. Don't let people bring you down. Keep your chin up and pray. Good luck to you all!

Pros:

Easy to take
With Doryx you can take both pills for the day at the same time.
Cleared me up halfway

Cons:

Hurts your stomach and you CANNOT go in the sun without getting sunburned.

Use it but be wary of its side effects...I probably am going on accutane if mino doesn't work and I tried it for 4 months

Pros:

Works well

Cons:

you will eventually become immune to antibiotics

I had clear and perfect skin while a teen. However, I started to develop an acne problem when I was 21. It grew more persistent at the age of 23 to moderate acne. Over the last four years, I have been on Tricycline, doxycycline and minocycline with great results. My acne became mild and persistent, but I eventually became immuned to each drug(s) after being on them on and off them the past four years. At age 27, I am not responding to these drugs and therefore on accutane to treat my persistent and mild acne. My dermatologist recommended it and said that it will cure me. I just started now. Bottom line, you will eventually be immuned to the drug over time and have to use another antibiotic. By then, if you acne still persists, I suggest accutane as the last resort. Severe acne though, should be treated with accutane.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
