Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

works well to slow doen the apperence of acne.

Cons:

As soo as u stop taking it the acne comes right back. Gets worst before it gets better.

Took it for about 30 days worked well but a week or two after i ran out my acne came back with full force. I got another prescription and am taking it again, we'll see if it works this time, mabye it wont come back.

Pros:

Worked very well. I am 48 years old and have had acne since I was a teenager. Drug worked very well and is non expensive

Cons:

After taking it for about 9 months, my facial acne was gone, but started getting pimples on my back. Changed to Erythromycin and the back problem cleared up.

Good drug at a reasonable price. I wish I had known about it when I was 14, which is when my acne started!

Pros:

*Works really well. *Will work as consitantly as you take it (excluding the first few days/week) *Easy to take (not large tablet) *Virtually no side affects.

Cons:

*Sunburn without sunscreen (slip slop slap)

I've been using this product for a few years and it has worked brilliantly, so long as it is taking consistantly and you're eating relatively well your pimples will appear virtually gone.

Pros:

I definately like it. I've been using it for 3 months and had to ask my derm to represcribe it because it was working. when I lowered the dosage though my skin broke out again.

Cons:

It does upset my stomach like everyone else when I take it on a completely empty stomach. Even though that's exactly what my prescription says to do. Since it's winter I haven't experienced the sun burn others mention.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with doxycline. It's helped alot.
January 3, 2008

Pros:

Hopefully it's improving my skin, hard to remember what I looked like before!

Cons:

Makes you vomit on an empty stomach, can't go in the sun

I've been back and forth on this medication for years (alternating with Monocycline in the summer) and I still get embarrassing breakouts. It's probably worth a try-- I think when I was put on doxycycline in middle school and high school it improved me a little. Then I went on accutane, was completely clear, and two years later I went back to the same 'ol acne. Due to the high side effects, my doctors never wanted me to go back on accutane, so I am 'stuck' on these lesser effective medications. I would say that it DOES improve acne, but definitely does not clear you up.

Pros:

not sure yet

Cons:

I have been a little spacey. Burns my throat if not taken with tons of water.

I really hope this works. I have been taking it for 5 days now for cystic acne and no improvement yet. I was also prescribed duac and differin one applied in the morning and the other at night.

Pros:

cheapo, worked okay while it lasted

Cons:

not being able to eat food two hours before pill and 1 hour after sucks, can upset entire digestive balance for reals, did not last long, after two months it effectiveness waned big time

i was 15 when I started this in march 2007, I quit three months later, when I started accutane. Doxy took a few weeks for full effect, but instantly i felt results. Acne is a bacterial infection. Antibiotics fight this infection. Sounds good huh? No. Acne is a three front war: sebum production most importantly, bacterial growth, and pore blockage. Doxy should be used in conjuction with other meds like a topical retinA (adapalene), a topcial antibiotic like clindamycin, and maybe BP at night. This did work for me for awhile, I had 70% clear skin while on this medication (and others), I had mild acne on all this crap... unacceptable.:( Antibiotics are not meant for longterm, YOU WILL NEVER EVER EVER GET A LONGTERM FIX FROM AN ANTIBIOTIC LIKE DOXY. never. But it may be worth a try. Go to derm, it is the first step. After three months on this I switched to accutane, I am EXTREMELY happy i did. PERFECT SKIN!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
