Pros:

Very inexpensive, after taking 100 mgs per day, I noticed that I didn't have any new pimples which is saying alot!

Cons:

Take it on a full stomach or nausea will hit you.

I am a 32 year old African American woman. I was diagnosed with PCOS 11 years ago. I have tried everything under the sun both OTC and prescription to no avail. I went to a new dermatologist and she asked all of the right answers. Turns out my acne is hormonal. She put me on YAZ birth control, 100 mg of doxycycline per day, and Benzaclin. My normal daily routine included waking up about 10 minutes earlier than need be just to pop any new pimples that erupted overnight. I have only been using the doctors regimen for 2 days and I haven't had any new pimples. I know for some people that isn't saying much but for me it gives me hope that her method just may work. I have been suffering with acne for 18 years now so I know how hopeless having acne can be. I plan on blogging next Wednesday to give a review of any improvement that I see.

Pros:

It seems to be clearing up my acne

Cons:

I have gotten the WORST stomach aches of my entire life with this medication. Having to stop at every pharmacy on every corner on the way to work to use their restroom is NOT fun.

If it agree with your stomach, go for it. For me, the horrible pain I got with the medication was not worth the results.

Pros:

I use to take doxycycline 6 months ago. it cleared up my skin almost completely after taking 50 mg twice a day, combined with prescription benzyol peroxide

Cons:

when i stopped taking the medication, my acne returned a few months later. i puked at least 4 times because i took this medication without a meal. always eat while taking this T_T

I just want to not have to worry about acne anymore. although its barely visable, it is still there, i can feel it haha. i break out at least once every few weeks

Pros:

No real side effects, apart from a headache in the early days.

Cons:

My Doctor initially had me on 50mg once a day. I complained, citing I thought 50mg twice a day would give better results.

Please consult your Doctor regarding taking a higher dose - for me it was beneficial

Impressed! Works better than Minocyline did. Drinking a lot of water and eating healthy helps too.

Pros:

Reduces inflammation wonderfully. Controls acne. Cheap.

Cons:

Causes nausea if taken on empty stomach.

This medicine will not completely eliminate acne. However, I have been on it for about 16 days and i have not gotten one inflamed pimple. Just small whiteheads right on the surface. I take it in addition to a topical antibiotic and the combination has done wonders. My skin is by no means perfect but i am ecstatic with the results so far.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
