Pros:

- I think it cleared up acne in some areas
- Very inexpensive if you get generic

Cons:

- Has some side effects
- Not sure if it is really working

I'm taking 100 MG 1x a day for 30 days with the topicals Differin and Benzaclin. I've seen positive results, but I think the creams are mostly responsible, not the pills. My concern with antibiotics is that they often work somewhat, and then when you stop taking them, the acne comes back with a vengeance. At least that's been the case with past antibiotics. Hopefully it does not occur with these little blue pills. Some people get side effects like vomiting and stomach aches. I was queasy the first day but after that side effects were not noticeable aside from mild dry eye. I don't take the pills with food.

Pros:

Within 5 days of using it I noticed a difference, in a matter of weeks my face has cleared fully, and I had serious acne

Cons:

Taking 100mg tablets once a day, difficult to remember to take them at same time due to variety in life in evening. After month and half, having possible case of oesophagitis, causing difficulty in drinking and eating but still worth using

Take at a suitable time of day, probably best at lunch or breakfast, eat a little or drink plenty when you take it to avoid the side effects. Side affects are always a possibility, but worth the risk and I don't regret my treatment

Pros:

cleared up cystic acne, unclogged nose pores, skin was de-congested, cleared up a terrible breakout I had in february

Cons:

pain to remember to take
hard to remember to take it in mornings when, msde me nausous (sp) and I often threw up in school, running late
annoying to have to take pills, pretty strong

eat something with it, and if you do you shouldn't feel it, it's a good backup acne fighter I dont recall any flare ups after taking the pill (i get this stuff free from my mom)

Pros:

I saw great results after only a month of use.

Cons:

I had no side effects.

I would recommend if tropicals didn't work. I am not sure what will happen when I stop taking the meciaton but for now it's working.

Pros:

I was on doxycycline for about 3 months during which time it cleared my skin up wonderfully. my skin was almost perfect. Now after being off of it 2 months and continuing to use Rosula wash day and night my skin has manged to remain almost as clear

Cons:

Some people say it makes them sick. I never had any problems at all. I always took it after eating and tried to drink some extra water when I took it. I also never laid down right after taking it.

Highly recommended, but I believe that someone shouldn't be on prescription meds like this for too long.

Pros:

Starting to help clear up my face, I haven't had a breakout since I've started on it.

Cons:

The first time I used it, I took it without food and it made me sick. Be sure to take it when you eat.

I've been using Doxycycline for almost 3 weeks and have already noticed results. My acne is slowly clearing up and I haven't had a breakout since I started taking it. I already have very fair skin that burns very easily, so I'm fine with remembering to put on sunscreen when I'm outdoors. I'm using it with Proactiv and Differin, and with all 3 working together, I'm good so far. :D

Pros:

Worked great for me. I didn't have a single deep pimple while using it, and it reduced redness.

Cons:

It only worked for about 3-4 months...then it suddenly stopped.

For the time it lasted, it worked wonders for eliminating pimples. I'm trying other medication right now, and I can only hope I can eventually go back to this instead. Plus I guess I have a tough stomach because I never had any problems in that sense.

Pros:

Reduced the amount of cystic acne and painful swelling. Reduced redness.

Cons:

Still have bumps where the pimples were. Stomach ache.

My skin is much better since I started taking it again. I was on 100mg 2x day for about three months and had no more acne, but had to change doctors due to ins. and acne came back when I ran out of refills. I've been on it for about three weeks and the painful lumps and redness is much better. I still have blackheads. I think I need additional treatment such as topical gels.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
