Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

It took 2 months to work, but it really cleared my skin!

Cons:

The tablets were really small, and some got stuck in my throat.

Doxy is really good, but once I went off it, my skin flared up like crazy. I am now starting the course again, with Differin, and I hope it will work like it did last time :)

Pros:

Clears up skin within a month or two

Cons:

Your body will become immune to the antibiotic which would make it not as effective, and liver problems can arise from staying on this medicine.

This really helped with my acne breakouts. I barely had one pimple while on this medicine. Make sure to take it with a lot of water and at least 2-3 hours before/after you have calcium supplement. Enjoy it while it lasts, because your body will end up becoming immune to the antibiotic and it will no longer work.

Pros:

It started to clear up my skin within 72 hours of starting it, I take 100mg two times a day.

Cons:

I haven't found any yet, I've not had the upset stomach, but then I am eating probiotic yogurt two times a day, which has helped me in the past when on antibiotics.

I had cystic acne, this is the first thing that has worked in a long long time. I fully recommend it. I am just hoping I can stay on it for a while, I am seeing a dermatologist in a few weeks time, these were prescribed by my family doctor, I'll see what she has to say about being on doxycycline then.

Pros:

clears up skin, only need to swallow one tablet a day, two if acne is bad.

Cons:

if you don't take doxy for a day or two, its affects immediately stop and acne comes back, and it takes a while for it to work again

People react differently to all medications. I personally have no negative side affects. It is highly recommended you talk to your doctor about this as well as any other medication. also, a little side note, (doxy. also is used to cure Chlamydia and Gonorrhea)

Pros:

Really clears my skin

Cons:

take on a FULL stomach

I was prescribed 100mg twice a day actually for a different reason to keep my body for getting infected after a surgery, but I noticed my skin is really clear so I did research and found out that this is also used for acne. Go figure!

Pros:

1. Best Acne Antibiotic I have used
2. Clears up within 2 weeks

Cons:

1. Side effects are awful
2. Taken on an empty stomach ... you will cry ...for over a week!
3. Headaches, tiredness

It was easily the best antibiotic I have used and I have used quite a few which had done nothing until then: oxytetracycline, erthromycin, minocycline, trimethroprim . Yet, after a few weeks one night I took it before bed with a bit of water and woke in the night unable to swallow as if a wire brush was stuckdown my throat. I went to take a drink and it hurt more. Turns out it had burnt my oesophagus and all my stomach lining was gone! I couldnt eat anything solid, hot or lukewarm for about 2 weeks and it was the worst time of my life. A very strong antibiotic with bad side effects take with caution if need be.

Pros:

Taking for a little over a week and I'm already seeing improvement in my body acne

Cons:

No cons for me so far

When the dermatologist saw the severity of my bacne, he prescribed me 100mg twice a day, a relatively high dose. I've been on for just over a week and I am beginning to see clearing starting with my shoulders. I've had no side effects whatsoever. No heartburn or stomach upsets, whether I take it with little or a lot of water, food or empty stomach. Doxycycline is often used long term, is good for many other conditions, and seems to have beneficial health effects aside from the antibiotic action such as reducing general inflammation. Generic prescription drug, covered on plans.

Pros:

It didn't have many side effects and seemed to clear SOME pimples. Or maybe it was just my skin clearing by itself.

Cons:

Didn't have that much effect on my pimples.

It didn't really work for me, but it may work for you, so try it out and see if it works. I used to take 50mg twice a day, and nothing really changed, it didn't alter anything on my face (consistent amount of pimples).

Pros:

I was on doxycycline for about 3 months during which time it cleared my skin up wonderfully. my skin was almost perfect. Now after being off of it 2 months and continuing to use Rosula wash day and night my skin has manged to remain almost as clear

Cons:

Some people say it makes them sick. I never had any problems at all. I always took it after eating and tried to drink some extra water when I took it. I also never laid down right after taking it.

Highly recommended, but I believe that someone shouldn't be on prescription meds like this for too long.

Pros:

Reduced the amount of cystic acne and painful swelling. Reduced redness.

Cons:

Still have bumps where the pimples were. Stomach ache.

My skin is much better since I started taking it again. I was on 100mg 2x day for about three months and had no more acne, but had to change doctors due to ins. and acne came back when I ran out of refills. I've been on it for about three weeks and the painful lumps and redness is much better. I still have blackheads. I think I need additional treatment such as topical gels.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
