Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

cheap.

Cons:

remembering to take it twice a day, and with food & water.

I just started taking it- been on it for about a week. the doc told me it may get worse, before it gets better. I've still had a break out, since i started. BUT the pimples weren't as inflamed... hopefully, i see more results in the near future. good luck to you all.

Pros:

Cleared up my moderate acne beautifully!
One pill once a day.

Cons:

Take with food.

I was taking Doxy as an anti-malarial medication while I was in S. America. I noticed that when I came home my skin was clear but I thought it was from wearing no makeup while I was away because when I got back (and stopped taking it) I broke out again. Then at work one day (I am a nurse) someone mentioned that their child was on it got acne. The lightbulb went off. It cleared up my skin so much I am now going to go back on it for acne. Fortunatly, I am going back to S. America again for a month and it will double as an anti-malarial again!

Pros:

Clears up your acne when u first start taking it for a couple of weeks. Easy to take.

Cons:

Doesn't completely clear up acne and acne comes back after a few months. When going off it acne becomes worse. Skin becomes extremely sensitive to the sun and looks unhealthy.

Good for a couple of weeks but not worth taking in the long run.

Pros:

I think when you continue to drink water regularly you see a bigger difference faster..but drinking water helps your skin all the time.

Cons:

In the beginning my face broke up pretty badly
and do not take the medicine on an empty stomach or you WILL throw up!

I really want this medicine to work because I seriously have tried everything haha I sound like those people on those commercials.

Cons:

Just 2 times ate the tablet n had to go to bathroom :)after

I have had pimples since i was 13, got bad case when i was 20,but it stopped n then I got a few everymonth before my period, n now im 26 and have had severe acne from 1,5 months ago.Got depressed I live in indonesia but now visiting Spain, i've been seeing different Derm in Indo but never really had clear face, n no one really gave me oral tablet, but tons of creams guess they just trying to sell their product!!! Went to see Derm here yesterday, n He gave me Doxy 100 mg once a day.Duac gel, ducray facial wash, Avene diacnel, Ducray keracnyl He heavily suggested that i see Gynocolog - suggested that acne could be caused by infection inside my body. So watch this space, i'll report in a couple of week..

Pros:

worked well. i saw improvements within a few weeks. i was using this along with the topical erythromycin. i think the combination together did it for me.

Cons:

i would get sick to my stomach b/c it had to be taken on an empty stomach. i would throw up sometimes (just water). i would have to eat crackers or something light to make the feeling go away.

it works well. if you can handle taking it w/o food and not feeling sick, more power to you. on the downside: i had to stop taking it b/c i was trying to get pregnant. about after a month of stopping the pills, i had the most horrible breakouts of my life. (i'm 27 and have had acne for more than 15 yrs). the pimples were so horrible and huge, and hurt terribly. i skin became so much more worse than before i had taken the pills. my doctor said to just wait it out. i waited it out for about 2 months, but could no longer handle the pain. now, i've been using rodan and fields unblemish for 2 months and it's working great. after about 2 wks my breakouts had subsided.

Pros:

It works. My large painful acne is completely gone.

Cons:

Some little acne still shows up.Sometimes all over my forehead.

It's cheap. It works. The only thing is I do not know how long I will be given a prescription for and I know the acne will come back if I stop taking it. I've been taking it for 4 months and I am waiting for my doctor to refill my prescription.

Pros:

ummm it seemed to be working a little

Cons:

It make you REALLY SICK. if taken on an empty stomache.

i took it and thought well i will eat after i take this... so i added a littke bit of food after i took it and bam! everything came up..it was scary. I hate throwing up. I think iam gona go back to minocycline. Doxy has too many restrictions! minocycline you can just take it and be done...Doxy... you will prob get sick as ever! Next time i will listen when they say "don't take on empty stomache" just did not work for me.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
