Doxycycline is an oral antibiotic that works by fighting bacteria in the body, including in the skin, and also reduces inflammation. It should be used only short term (max. 3 months).

It is usually prescribed at a dose of 50 to 100 mg once or twice per day.

Pros:

It seems to have cleared up my acne, along with the birth control pills I was taking.

Cons:

I'm very vulnerable to yeast infections. I know it's gross, but did anyone else have this problem?

I realize I can't be on birth control pills and antibiotics forever. I just hope that when I get off of this, I won't start breaking out again. I really can't take the yeast infections anymore.

Pros:

Been using it for a month and my chest acne is clearing up.
I use the clean and clear advantage kit on my face and within a week i only have 3 blemishes compared to a million >.<

Cons:

It didn't dry the skin out on my face but it did dry my skin between cleavage. I suffered from minor depression while using this and had some suicidal thoughts over the dumbest stuff =/

If you haven't tried it and nothing seems to work i would try it. I've had chest acne since 7th grade and i'm in 10th now and it looks better then it ever has. extra details: Products i have used in the past are proactiv,mura,philosophy,neutrogena,clearisil,differin,sapoderm[soap from australia],and other acne pills. I also exfoliate my face ONCE a week with aveeno daily brightening scrub and if you have HIGHLY sensitive skin and uneven skin tone this is awesome. Aspirin mask once ever two weeks. 4 tablets. add some water to get a little griddy paste. 15 minutes. rinse with hot then cold. i hope this was helpful and goodluck with your results!

Pros:

Cleared up the acne on my face

Cons:

Caused Acne on my chest

I started using Doxycycline in September 2008. I used it for 2 months and my face cleared up but I started to break out on my chest. The bumps were very tiny but everywhere. I stopped using the product and they went away. I asked my Dr. and he said that it shouldn't have casued my chest to break out. I just started back on it again about 2 weeks ago and once again I am getting these little bumps on my chest which confirmed that it is the doxycycline causing the bumps. Anyone else had these issue's??

Pros:

My acne cleared up about 2 months after using this product. Do not take without eating food before.

Cons:

I experienced some of the few side effects of the drug. I felt very depressed, had suicidal thoughts throughout the night, constant masturbation and errections lasted well over 4 hours

Cleared up acne, but side effects were not worth it

Pros:

It took 2 months to work, but it really cleared my skin!

Cons:

The tablets were really small, and some got stuck in my throat.

Doxy is really good, but once I went off it, my skin flared up like crazy. I am now starting the course again, with Differin, and I hope it will work like it did last time :)

Pros:

My 16 year old daughter began taking Doxycycline 3 months ago. It took approx a month & a half to begin showing positive results. Along with YAZ, Retin A creme and Clindomyacin creme, all 4 prescriptions have finally proven successful.

Cons:

Cannot take on empty stomach. Began having nausea, minor abdominal pain two weeks ago. Went to Dr. today. Go back to Derm. in 1 week. Cannot stay on Doxy forever....will find out soon.

It works. Once she is "off it", and two months have passed and it is completely out of her system, I am hoping that it cleared the acne up enough to where it won't come back as agressively as before. I'm a realist.

Pros:

I have suffered and fighting ance seens i hit 18 years old. i have used everything and i cant get rid of it. ive used proactive,, accutane that wrok a little bit up the side affects were really strong so i stoped and now im on Doxcycline

Cons:

ive been on it for 2 months and i still have ance this first week or two it got better but my acne is getting worse and i dont know what to do ..the cons are that your have to wait patiantly and you get a upset stomach

this is all that i have and i have knowing else to lose. ive tried everything so hopefully it will clean up my skin. if anyone is out there with the same problem i know how it feels . it the worst feeling ever. you dont want to go out side nore talk to no one. or even look in the miror to see if it has gotten better..anyone that can help me on this question? what do you guys use on you face to wash it .. any products.. please let me know i need help

Pros:

Affordable -- without health insurance; effective; side effects, though noticeable, are very manageable compared with those of other treatments; my skin looks great

Cons:

Unexpected reactions with sweeteners and other food additives! (Unable to determine exactly which ones)

I've had no experiences taking 100 mg daily of this drug that have not been shared already in all of the comments that I've read, except this one: Do not mix with Red Bull! I eat and drink as directed, and I don't suffer from anything but a mildly "not pleasant" feeling in my stomach -- like I'm not queasy but can feel that I've taken a dose that day (the feeling usually will subside within a couple of hours). But though discovering sugar-free Red Bull made me think that I really had discovered wings, I had to go back to coffee when I started taking this drug, because the combo made me violently and instantaneously ill, within fewer than about 10 minutes. I thought it was just the aspartame, but, unfortunately, regular Red Bull produced the same result. So, for the commenters who are perplexed about all of the nausea talk here, you can try this experiment for yourself; however, I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to live the ipecac scene from that one episode of "Family Guy."

Pros:

Pill is very small. Easy to take. Works on a multitude of bacteria and various illnesses.

Cons:

Takes forever to start working. Upsets my stomach if taken w/o food. Can only be taken with certain foods, conflicts with A LOT of other meds. Cannot lie down for 30 min after taking it.

I have been on this medicine for about 3 weeks. I have not missed a day. I take 1 100mg tablet daily. I have not noticed any improvement in my skin and have actually had 1 bad breakout since I've been on it. My acne is under the skin ( no raised pimples) but about a week ago I got the meanest pimple ever on my face and back! I have a 2 month prescription so I will continue to take it. I hope it works, if not, the next step will be laser skin resurfacing (Obaji).

Pros:

Just started a week ago. I was told to give it at least a month to work. Not seeing an improvement yet but will continue to use..of course! I have tried just about everything.

Cons:

Upset stomach the first couple days..

WIll have to keep updating, not sure yet. I am 34 yrs old, never had acne this bad before.... help!

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:
