Pros:

Clears up most acne; fewer breakouts; if I did get acne, it would only be a pimple or two and they'd heal quickly

Cons:

Developed a resistance FAST :(

Definitely good for a few months, but after that I developed a resistance and started breaking out HORRIBLY :( Going back to the derm this week to ask about Bactrim.

Pros:

no upset stomach
easy pill to swallow

Cons:

in the beginning - joint pains, photosensativity, browning of the teeth

pretty much ive been on this for a little over a month. and its done absolutely nothing at all for my acne ive been eating very healthy and staying far away from my acne triggers, taking this on a completely empty stomach 100 mg twice daily full glass of water just to make sure im doing everything completely right and still no better. as a matter of fact my acne is just getting even more persistent... im going to derm and asking for bactrim next. bottom line if this kicks in finally at the end of the month i will re-review this item. as of right now. it sucks!

Pros:

it works, and fast for me!
little to no side effects when taken with food.
CHEAP at walmart pharmacies.

Cons:

sensitivity to sunlight
having to take it everyday
can't work forever!

i had been strugging with acne since i was in my teens. i kept it under control with a topical gel until i started shaving regularly. then i developed inflammatory acne and topical gels just didnt cut it. well, fast forward to a few years later. i am now 25 years old and after figuring visiting a dermatologist was an investment for my self esteem, i was prescribed this antibiotic. i take 1 a day at 100mg. within a week of taking it, my acne cleared up almost completely (with one or two zits popping up when i shave). i've been on it for a month now and it still works just as good. my face is clear now, no longer bright RED and i just feel better and more confident with myself. i take this once a day and wash my face with neutrogena transparent bar soap. couldnt be happier!

Pros:

It WORKS.
No side effects unless you have a sensitive stomach and you take it without food.

Cons:

takes a LONG time.

During the first month of using this, I didnt see hardly and results, and it was very frustrating. I thought it didn't work. After another month went by, my skin became a lot smoother, and less acne was popping up. As of now, my skin is very smooth and clear...you just have to be PATIENT....and dont get discouraged too soon.

Pros:

-kills bacteria from the inside out
-easier to take a pill than a topical
-great results

Cons:

-only works for as long as you use it
-can't take an antibiotic for long periods of time
-can hurt stomach (only experienced this a couple times)

I was prescribed doryx 150mg 1x daily to use in 2 week intervals as needed. My chin acne got clear and I saw results in less than a week. by 2 weeks i was very pleased with the results and my skin was clear for a couple weeks after I stopped taking it. over time, my acne started to gradually come back to about normal. It can be great for a quick fix and you can use it in the first couple weeks of a new topical to avoid an initial break out. I will start taking this a few weeks before prom so my skin should be clear then

Pros:

- It cleared up my bacne
- It stopped spots on my face as well
- Free on NHS

Cons:

Made me VERY sensitive to sunlight
Occasional vomiting after taking it

I started doxycycline because of my acne on my chest and back and it worked really well - cleared my skin up. I was on it for about a year but finally decided to come off it because it made me so sun sensitive. This is a fairly common side effect and as I'm so pale anyway it was not very nice. I made me throw up only twice and only because i hadn't eaten. I would recommend it though as it did work :)

Pros:

No new pimples.
Free, publix.

Cons:

-Nausea
-Throwing up
-Body pains
-headaches

It's working so well. No new pimples, it's healing the ones that I have. But, I am really sick all of the time. I missed my chemistry lecture twice this week because I was throwing up and had a headache. It's working amazingly, but at a very high cost, because I am always sick. Word of advice: The bottle says to take it without food. DO NOT DO THIS. I did, and I started dry heaving and throwing up the acids in my stomach, not fun. Take it with food, don't lie down after taking it, and get that tylenol ready because you'll need it. Also, drink hot tea, because this stuff keeps you from sleeping. It's such a good pill, works like magic, but it's whether you want to go through this or not. Luckily, the most you can take this is 1 year. I'm taking it for about a month, and then I'm getting an extraction because once they take everything out, it'll all be gone, then you're put on a roll of other antibiotics and creams that will prevent everything. Please be careful young women who are sexually active, if you get pregnant while using this your baby's life and your life can be threatened.

Pros:

Has greatly reduced bumps.
Allows pimples to dissapear overnight.
Works, regardless of whether I am wearing makeup.
Boyfriend has noticed. (Says I am beautiful either way though.)

Cons:

You must suffer through a few days of extra bad acne in order for the medication to surface all of the bacteria and oil that already exists under your skin. Then it should stay clear.

Works great! I've been on it before while in high school, but had to stop when I joined the military because I couldn't be on drugs in boot camp. My skin stayed clear for a while through boot camp and school, and then I started to break out again, so I went to Navy medical and the doc prescribed it to me again. The downside is that I will need to stop tanning in order to avoid dangerous UV rays, because the medicine makes you hypersensitive to the sun. RIP golden skin, hello clear skin. SO worth the sacrifice. :)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
