Pros:

Chest and back are clear

Cons:

It's been 6 1/2 weeks and I haven't seen much of a difference.

I had really bad hormonal acne. I can tell that the doxycycline is surfacing the pimples, it's just taking longer than normal. I wish I knew if I were wasting my time. I'm using this 200 mg a day with duac and differin.

Pros:

Clears 95% of acne
No side effects at all

Cons:

Takes forever ( about 2 months)
Will make it worse before it gets better

This is a good treatment for anyone who is really struggling and is having to success. It will take about 2 months to working but after that its like magic. It's also nice because it doesnt make your face dry at all. Overall a great product!

Pros:

Removed most Cysts on face.

Cons:

No real cons, I experienced no side effects, just made sure I ate before I took one.

After taking this for a few months, despite the fact it has eliminated some cysts on my face, I am not satisfied. I still break out and I would suggest if you're willing to go on Accutane, you skip Doxycycline and start it. Even if this is effective, your acne is still likely to come back after treatment. However, if you're not willing to try Accutane due to it's side effects, this is probably the best antibiotic for you.

Pros:

Got rid of some large pimples, but definitely not all of them

Cons:

Did not clear up my face
My stomach hurt with use of it (if I ate or not)

I'm Filipino and I have moderate to severe acne (and it doesn't help that I have extremely oily skin as well). I just broke out around my 17th birthday (what a great birthday present, right?) all over my cheeks. Now, I grew up having very bad acne on my forehead but my cheeks remained relatively clear until my birthday and then all of a sudden, I was breaking out in multitudes all over my cheeks. It has, in effect, made me extremely insecure about myself. I went to the dermatologist and his assistant was there to treat me instead and prescribed me this horrible, ineffective pill. It has done nothing for me whatsoever. I saw no changes and considering the fact that my family doesn't have health insurance, the cost for this pill was extremely high. I forced myself to take it every day despite how upset my stomach made my body; I've thrown up and I've been bed ridden due to this pill and I just gave up and told my parents how this pill made me feel. I stopped using it and I started using Pro Active instead. I'm still currently in the use of it so I can't say how Pro Active has worked for me but it has done a lot more than this pill has. What I also don't like about taking pills is that it affects the whole body, not just one specific area.

Pros:

-It's taking away my cysts and shoulder acne
-Only have to take 1 pill a day
-Paid $6 for a month supply

Cons:

Don't really have any

I have battled acne for about 2 years now. I have done so many things to try to get rid of it. I was on Tetracycline for about 2 months. That got rid of a lot of my cysts but not completely. My doctor prescribed doxycycline about a week ago. I also apply topical erythromycin at night and use arbonne face wash in the shower. During the day i wear arbonne's lotion. This combination seems to be doing the trick. I only have about two cysts left and my face feels amazing. I still have a bunch of red marks from past zits but that will heal in time. I recommend taking doxycycline.

Pros:

Very inexpensive
Side-effects were minor

Cons:

Requires a lot of patience

During college I had moderate acne easily controlled by topicals over the counter, but after my complexion started getting much worse, large, deep pustules mostly on the side of the chin and on my cheek bones. Been on Doxy for about a month now and am seeing some improvement, but need to be patient for full results I think. My skin is a little less oily and new zits take less time to go away than before the doxy. Hoping If I stick with it Ill see a ton of improvement by end of month 2.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
