Pros:

None!!! It makes NO difference, even after months of use.

Cons:

Women, beware!! I never got a vaginal yeast infection till I used this antibiotic. It was a very difficult infection to get rid of. Also, it made my skin very sun sensitive even though my skin is tan.

This stuff is worthless.

Pros:

Works for a little while...

Cons:

Can't take without food, can't take with dairy, have to take twice a day, can't tan

I had been on Doxy since Dec. (around 3 months), in conjunction with micro derm. After about 6 weeks it was working great, and now my face is worse it seems (having stopped the micro after about 5 or 6 treatments). So, now the only thing I'm using is Benz. Perox. 10%. I guess I built up an immunity to the doxy I'm not sure. All I know is zits suck!! It's so stressful!

Pros:

generic doxycycline is VERY cheap, works pretty quickly for the duration that I've taken it

Cons:

Once you stop taking it, it stops working (obviously), and there are cons to being on long term antibiotic therapy. Increases sun sensitivity, also.

I initially used doxy in conjunction with generic retin-a to clear up moderate acne. The combo leaves you very sun-sensitive, but clears zits like a dream. After 30 days, I stopped doxy and just used retin-a to maintain results, although I will get my doxy scrip refilled if I need to get rid of a flare up. It is very effective, cheap, and doesn't have many side effects (at least, it doesn't for me)

Pros:

Works very well. Clears the skin in a week.

Cons:

The acne comes back within a week or so after I stop taking it.
You feel queasy when taken on an empty stomach.

Goo product. Much better any of the other topicals or orals i have used.

Pros:

None for me

Cons:

unless taken with food you will experience nausea. Can't take with dairy products. Dried out my eyes.

I have been on doxy 100mg twice a day for a month now. My face has never broke out this bad. It seems like more and more each day. I went to the doctor because I get the occasional bump and sometimes in cycles. She prescribed me doxy and said give it some time. All it did was make everything worse. When I look in the mirror I get depressed. Hopefully I can start accutane and see if that works. I wish I never would have gone to see a dermatologist because all she did was screw up my face. I would be much happier without taking this medicine. Now I have to try something else to stop what has just recently come up. Now I know how people feel that have severe acne.
March 3, 2007

Pros:

-helps severity of acne
-shrinks pores

Cons:

-can make one sick if not taken with food
-can cause stomach/throat problems if not taken with enough water
-doesn't clear acne all the way

Can work to a ceratin point if taken correctly. Good for people with more mild acne.

Pros:

This product totally cleared my skin after a month. IO mean my skin was perfect, I really thpught my acne was gone for good.

Cons:

The acne will come back after five months. It is very heartbreaking. And while on the medicine you can eat dairy which is kinda of hard.

The product works but around month four or five you need to start on it again.

Pros:

The only good thing about this medicine is that it works for a few months

Cons:

I have been on doxy for almost a year now, it worked for me for about 5 months and my acne is starting to come back. I read that once you stop taking doxy or become immune, that there is a high chance your acne will come back worse than before.

It is nice to have clear skin for a while, but it is definitely not worth taking due to the fact that once you stop taking this medication, you have to deal with the pain all over again. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless they have tried everything with no results, and if you do decide to take doxy, I really hope that everything works out okay. I have never missed a dose and have alway tried to take it the same time every day. I started with 100mg twice a day now I am trying to wein myself off of it because my acne started coming back, now I am taking 50mg twice a day.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
