Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Clears up acne great! I'm 36 and still suffer from moderate acne. This is the only thing that has worked for me.

Cons:

I've thrown up when taking it with just coffee in the morning...and I get really bad stomach pains after a couple weeks. It may have caused an ulcer:(

Works great on my acne...but I cannot take it for more than a month...due to SEVERE stomach pain! Give it a couple weeks to work, too.

Pros:

Reduced my acne in the first 3 weeks of taking it.

Cons:

Upset stomach, headaches, mood swings, black outs. Not suitable for long term solution.

I began taking it 2 years ago as nothing else seemed to help my skin and my doctor diagnosed me with rosacea so prescribed me doxy for 6 months. The first 2 weeks were awful and my skin got even worse, but I perservered and eventually it really cleared up. My skin was so much smoother and my skin tone had evened out loads so I was really pleased. However, after having taken it for a whole year my skin was actually getting worse and I was developing very painful cyst like spots on my jawline that just would not go away. I also kept drinking alcohol as I am 25 and enjoy socialising and having a good time - this led to me blacking out occasionally (very worrying!) I went to another doctor as I said I didnt want to be on antibiotics for the rest of my life and was worried about how it was affecting the rest of my body. He took me off it, I feel so much better and did realise how ill it was making me feel.My skin is still a major problem but has got better since I stopped ta

Pros:

It seems to be working,I'm 32 and it is the first time that i get acne like this, my derm prescribed 100mg twice a day.

Cons:

Photo-sensitivity

Today is my third day and it seems that my acne is already going away really. So far no stomach problems even without meals, just make sure that you drink plenty of water. So bottom line believe it or not it is working for me.

Cons:

I doesn't work

I used this for months and my acne stayed the same

Pros:

clears skin after a while.

Cons:

bad nausea. i had vomiting after taking this pill when i hadnt had a big breakfast. anyone who takes this have it with a big breakfast (should be balanced and plentiful). also you get a BAD SUNBURN. very red, peeling, painful skin even with sunblock

give it a chance. it works best for moderate acne if you use it with a mild retinoid and a fairly strong (5 or 10%) benzoyl peroxide (i recommend clean & clear persa-gel). just be patient, in the morning EAT BREAKFAST, and WEAR SUNSCREEN. also, if you are like me and have very bad nausea side effects when taking this pill, i recommend the tablets (little and orange) more than the capsules (bright blue ones). the tablets wont upset your stomach as much. so... just be very conscious of the amount of time you spend in the sun (seriously - i play field hockey and had a game on a chilly november morning - on this pill and got bad burn), and be sure to eat a big breakfast. i found that if you take the pill AFTER there is food in your body, it is better. i have been on this pill for 6 months now and a few weeks ago my derm told me i can cut it to once a day instead of twice because my skin was so much better. so that proves that if you stick with it, it really will make a difference

Pros:

I been taking Doxycycline for about 2 weeks now, and my back is getting pretty clearer than it was before

Cons:

My face is getting better slowly, I was just wonering if someone could tell me when I will start seeing perfectly clear skin, or close to it? I still got alot more pills to take in my bottle. But i sometimes feel its a waste of time taking them.

I am sure this is a good drug to use for acne, but i would like someone to tell me how long its going to take for my skin to completely clear, then i can make an accurate assumtion.

Specs of light in my vision, & Sick feeling in stomach- I can see specs of light as well as having my 'normal eyesight'

Have yet to see results

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
