Pros:

Easy to use every day, works really well at controlling big acne, not so much on the everyday stuff but it really does work

Cons:

Can't see any, i get no sickness or any other side effects. As regards sun-sensitivity, it makes me tan unbelievably dark, not burnt.

Only thing is I swear I sometimes get memory loss after drinking on it! No, its not just the booze!!

Would recommend to anyone what have u got to lose, its so easy to use! Used inconsistently over 5 years, when i came off it its not that great a shock. Back on it again now

Pros:

Just started taking this yesterday - my dermatologist put me on 100mg every 12 hours. Maybe it is just my imagination (or wishful thinking), but I swear my skin feels smoother and looks less red than it did yesterday. I am also using Differin gel.

Cons:

I haven't had any nausea like others have mentioned on here, but I did have a weird stomach pain in my lower right stomach a few hours after taking it. I don't like the idea of taking such a strong antibiotic for 6 wks but if it works, worth it...

Only been on it a day, and have high hopes! Am in my early 30's and have had acne on and off for most of my life since adolescence, so would be so happy to have this clear up once and for all (that would be a miracle.) Acne is really a horrible thing, and I am so glad to have found this page to read what others are saying and realize that I at not alone (it still sucks, but at least we can all be miserable together!) :) WISHING EVERYONE GOOD LUCK AND CLEAR SKIN AND CONFIDENCE!

Pros:

Worked at first.

Cons:

After about 3 weeks on this medicine, my face slowly began to break out, then break outs became severe.

This medication made a mess of my skin. There were no other diet, medical or prescription changes, so I believe it was this medication that caused it. I would not recommend. I would never take it again. I have been off of it for over a month now, and am still getting some breakouts; it is a very slow process to clear up.

Pros:

Super easy and convenient. Has worked very well so far, even with just a week's use.

Cons:

None-

I have been using Doxy 100 mg once a day. I Also was advised that its ok to take with dairy and food, no problems! Im also taking in conjunction with contraceptives. So far, so good! I would reccommend this product as of now.

Pros:

I just started developing cystic acne at age 44. Things improved after 1 week i.e. the inflamed cysts I had started shrinking away instead of getting increasing inflamed for weeks.

Cons:

you can't take antibiotics indefinitely.

i'veied benzoyle peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, tretinoin, azelaic acid, but only the antibiotics have worked and it is relatively inexpensive.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne within 1 month of use. Not much problem since.

Cons:

Nausea if taken on empty stomach. Shouldn't be taken with birth control.

I had the worse acne of my life @ the age of 23! I thought puberty was over!! It was on my cheeks and jawline. I also was breaking out on my chest and arms. I went to the doctor and she put me on Benzyl Peroxide 5% wash for a month. It made it worse!! I went back and she prescribed Doxy 100mg 2x a day. She said that the pimples I see now were developed 3 weeks ago and it would take about 3 more weeks to see results. I noticed no new outbreaks and it cleared up my skin perfectly in about 5-6 weeks. I only took it for about 3 months and quit because I didn't want it to interfere with my birth control. I have only had small outbreaks since but nothing compared to what it was. I would recommend this to someone who suffers from moderate acne and has tried all the topical remedies. Accutaine would have been the next step but a friend of mine recently started taking it and his acne got so bad in the beginning that I don't think that it is worth it unless you have severe acne.

Pros:

I have taken doxycyline for almost 3 months and I am just starting to see a slight improvement.

Cons:

I have had the nausea. One night I puked for hours b/c I took it on an empty stomach. It kinda makes me sleepy too. I havent seen much improvement.

Its been almost 3 months of taking doxy. 100mg 2x day and using RetinA micro at night. I am still peeling/dry/redness. Not much improvment. I really thought that after 3 months my skin would look great, but not the case. When I take my makeup off, my family is like "oh my gosh what happend to your face?? that medicine must not be working!!" Im like, yeah no kidding!! This sucks. I go back to the Derm. in 2 weeks. We'll see what he has to say.

Pros:

Cleared up acne within a month. Acne free for 5 years. People with clear skin even commented they wished they had skin like mine! Affordable

Cons:

Nausea if taken on empty stomach. Cannot take with milk.

I had really bad acne when I was 13 on my face and back and this really worked for me. It cleared up all my acne within a month. I took it for 5 years because I was afraid my acne will come back again and during that time, my skin was as soft and smooth like a baby and I never need to wear make-up at all. My friends who had clear skin even said they wish they had skin like mine!I never had any side effects with the drug even sun sensitivity maybe because I always apply sunscreen and I never go sun tanning. However recently I seem to have breakout again. I think the acne has become resistant to the drug. I'm trying minocycline now. But this drug really works! Its a wonder pill for me for the last 5 years because I was acne free! Highly recommended!

Pros:

Completely cleared up my acne -- I wasn't breaking out at all while on it. I was on it for three months and after the first couple weeks probably only had three or four pimples the entire duration.

Cons:

Doctor took me off it during the summer and moved me to a cream as she said that it can cause skin sensitivity and severe sunburn during the summer. I started breaking out again once off it.

Worked great for me, no side effects. It was great not having to worry about my skin at all.. just take a pill when I got up and went to bed and enjoy 100% clear skin. Insurance covered it 100% so it was quite affordable. =)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
