Acne.org’s Real World Take
An anti-inflammatory that takes weeks or months to kick in, so you’ll need patience. Provides modest benefit in some users. It’s never hit the big time in acne treatment. But it’s an interesting way to target acne on a purely inflammation level.

Ive been using this product for the past 4 months in the AM and it has improved my acne tremendously. It also feels nice on the skin and does well under makeup. I started noticing an improvement in about a week. I would definitely recommend Aczone to anyone batteling cystic acne!!!

Pros:

-Not overly drying, like most topical treatments.
-Helps with redness.
-Seems to help with pimples so far.

Cons:

-Kinda pricey without coupons.. 25.00USD with coupon.. 100.00 without it.

I have redness and sensitive skin. Pretty much a tough combo to deal with!! I have tried alot of treatments, like Ziana gel, but they always dry my skin out. Finally, my derm gave me this to try. It didn't break me out in the beginning, and I was quite pleased! Also pimples are getting smaller, and disappearing. I have been using this for a week now. My face looks pretty darn clear! :)

Pros:

Very effective

Cons:

Dries skin

I use it along with retin-a-micro and began to see results within a few weeks. The only thing is that my skin is now super dry but that is easily fixed with a moisturizer.

Pros:

Works pretty much instantly with no irritation at all.

Cons:

Didn't seem to work as well after about a year.

I use it with minocycline, the only other medication that ever worked for me. Overall, I'm very pleased with this product. Definitely worth the money.

Pros:

- gentle
- helps acne heal faster
- helps with inflammation
- no initial breakout

Cons:

- expensive
- doesn't cure acne or leave face acne free

I agree with other reviews that it does not prevent acne but the acne I do get heals faster when I use Aczone. It helps with inflammation as well. I use it once a day in the AM before putting on my makeup. It is also very gentle and doesn't cause redness/irritation like many other acne products.

Pros:

dried up pimples fast
gentle on skin

Cons:

does not prevent acne
expensive

My derm recommended this product for me as a daily topical. At night I use differin 3.0 and I am also on the antibiotic Doxy. The aczone is good on big pimples and cysts. It really dries them up quickly and makes them less painful. My insurance, Aetna would not cover this medicine and they wanted 300$ for it. Even with the coupon my derm gave me it still came out to be $170. I went back to my derm and asked for something cheaper but instead he got me a free bottle from the vendor and lots of sample sized ones.

Pros:

- Not very harsh
- Did not have an initial break-out
- Helps reduce redness/inflammation
- Helps reduce white heads

Cons:

- Doesn't prevent acne
- Doesn't leave you acne free
- Can be expensive
- Tube does not last long

This product did not clear my skin, I still regularly get acne but I have seen improvement. Overall, I see a reduced amount of acne. In addition, I get fewer white heads and blemishes tend to me smaller. While I still get new breakouts I find that with Aczone they go away more quickly. A major plus is that this is much more gentle on skin than other products I have tried. Just a tiny bit of dryness at the beginning. Unfortunately after using this product for over a year it seems to be less effective.

Pros:

Treated my acne better than almost every other topical cream I've tried, such as evoclin and retin-A. The gel itself feels clean, and has a kind of grainy consistency, which I personally enjoy.

Cons:

VERY expensive! And I am unaware of any generic dapsone treatments...

I can honestly say this has been the best topical treatment I have used after about eight years of trial and error. Definitely worth a try, if you're willing to spend the extra money.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
