Cons:

dries skin out, doesnt work as fast as advertised, causes breakouts

I never had horrible breakouts, just a bad complexion. I was one of those people who had a bunch of little pimples all over. I tried ProActive and it doesnt work like they say. It was just "okay" when I first started using it, but one time it dried my skin out so badly that it was painful for a few days and then another time I skipped just one application and my face broke out all over the place! That refining mask DOES NOT do what is says either! I switched to the Clearasil system thats supposed to be better than Proactive, and it works so much better and is way more gentle than proactive to your face. Plus, it only costs $20 per kit which is wayyy less than proactive after the introductory price.

Pros:

Started clearing acne, nice smell

Cons:

Burned my cheeks, chin, and forehead very badly!

After only a short week of Proactiv, I broke out in a huge red, itchy, burning rash on my forehead, cheeks, and chin that crusted into a scaly mess. It looked awful, and felt even worse! Would NEVER use this product again.

Pros:

it worked for a little while
didn't smell bad

Cons:

made me break out horribly for the first few months
my skin stayed very oily (maybe was even more oily than normal)
took a long time to use every morning and nite

it took several months to work, left my skin oily, and stopped working a few months after it started!

Pros:

Works fast, very well, and leaves skin super soft. I had 3 cyst zits before i tried this stuff (i was using clinique when i got the zits...clinique sucks!) and now they are like totally healed and gone. I have not found anything that works this well

Cons:

only negative i have is w/the packaging, it'd be nice if it had a dispenser or something...

I don't have much acne, but i'm prone to cyst zits and whiteheads. I'd say it's affordable and works well for mild to moderate acne.

Pros:

Slight improvement. I went from having mild acne to a little bit more mild acne.

Cons:

moderately expensive (and not worth it), smell is disgusting,

I think I just got sucked into the advertising. The cleanser is really thick and doesn't cleanse very well. The toner is okay. The repairing lotion is very thick and gluggy and makes skin shiny. The smell is disgusting its like this gross chemical smell covered up with a cheap fragrance. I've switched to clinique's anti-blemish. So far so good.

Cons:

this is a worthless product. it is nothing but benzoyl peroxide, which u can buy over the counter. It dries the hell out of your face

It's a f**king joke!

Pros:

I have used Proactiv for a few years. Using the face wash, toner and lotion was too much for my skin. I started using the face wash by itself and it worked just fine. I only had mild acne.I have not used Proactiv for a while now and no more pimples

Cons:

The face wash stains or bleaches anything with color. My colored towels all got stained or bleached by this product. I thought I rinsed by face well each time. I would wash my face with Proactiv before bed and even my pillow cases got stained.

Product works, but you may have to find what combination of the products works best for you. You don't necessarily need the 3 step program of face wash, toner and repairing lotion. Also, use white towles when you dry your face or you will ruin your colored towels!!!

Pros:

It works!

Cons:

It's a little pricey, but well worth the money spent.

I have had acne all my life and this is the best product I have ever used. My face was broken out constantly before I used proactiv. When I first started the system, I had to use the concealer to hide my blemishes. It took a few weeks for all of my acne to clear up, but I have been using the product for over a year and my skin looks the best it ever has. I finally threw away the unusued concealer because I have not needed to use it since. I highly, highly recommend this product.

Pros:

um......it's nicely packaged

Cons:

Well seeing as how it's supposed to clear acne and it doesn't clear my moderate acne...i would have to say that that's the major con, and for the amount it cost it should work. it's not worth the money!

It doesn't work!

Pros:

Does good with keeping face clear. Very inexpensive! Works just as good as clerasil.

Cons:

doesnt work well next to the lips.

This product and drinking plenty of water keeps my face clean.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
