Pros:

Mild initial improvement

Cons:

Didn't work
Too Strong

This might be okay for a short term solution, but if you've have problems with acne for a while, this likely won't be the answer. It wasn't for me at least.

Pros:

Easy to Use
Light on skin

Cons:

Small Quantity
A bit expensive

My face has cleared up really well from the use of Proactiv, but from what I have read it will only work on some skin types. It has so far, make my acne less irritated and inflammed, and I highly recommend it.

Accutane is often referred to as a "last resort" acne treatment and the reasons for this are obvious. It's a systemic drug with tons of nasty side effects, not the least of which is a probable and probably scarring initial breakout, and it generally takes half a year before anybody on Accutane has skin worth looking at. The Regimen is a last resort of a different kind. It has no side effects whatsoever, really, and it's not going to scar you up. You'll have great skin within 8 weeks, probably, and then breakouts will be, at worst, very very rare. But it takes so much work. If you're on the Regimen, you have to be the kind of person for whom acne really is a life-ruining problem. And if you are then bully. If you're the kind of person who has nightmares about new zits, who when broken out just stays in and sulks, or who with one pimple will think EVERYONE CAN SEE HOW UGLY I AM, then I strongly encourage you to try the Regimen. Because odds are it will clear you right up and you can feel good. But you need to put in a lot of effort. If you stay in the sun too long it will make your skin peel like nobody's business. ANYTHING you're likely to touch, e.g. pants or your friends' pillows, will get bleach splotches. And if you don't apply the treatment every 12 hrs then it won't be as effective. And think about that. The average person is awake for 15-18 hrs. That means, instead of when you wake up and when you go to bed, the Regimen has you applying treatment when you wake up and then in the middle of your friends' dinner party. Or what have you. I can't tell you how obsessed I became with the Regimen--it was something I was thinking about, a cycle I was in, all the time. It became the central force in my life, which was a misery. So why is the Regimen a last resort? Because it's hard, it's so hard, to live with the Regimen. What I want from a treatment is something I can do at night, do in the morning, and then

Pros:

Clears up white heads and bumps, improves skin texture/tone, auto delivery

My skin looks so milky and satiny!

Cons:

Takes awhile, not super effective on cysts (but what topical is?), but it does shorten their healing/dying time considerably.

I had read so many bad reviews on Proactiv that I was scared to try it for YEARS. Man I wish I had ignored them, I would have had clear skin by now! A few things to all those giving a bad review: 1. READ THE FLIPPIN INSTRUCTIONS To everyone saying "oh they sent me a travel sizeeeee. I always run out!!!" read the instructions. It clearly says to use a dime sized amount of the soap and toner, and a PEA sized amount of the lotion. The next month they will send you LARGE bottles that should last you 3 months. Also, people saying the wash hurts, or scrapes their skin, the instructions also say "massage GENTLY on skin." The instructions are there for a reason. 2. USE EVERY STEP EVERY AM/PM As with EVERY acne treatment, you MUST be consistent. Don't give a product a bad review because you're lazy or skipped a few days. Likewise, you have to use a treatment for AT LEAST 4 weeks + to see the MINIMAL results on your skin. 3. GET A MEMBERSHIP Even if it is only temporary. You save tons of money on ALL of their products. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, CANCEL IT. 4.READ THE FINE PRINT Sorry, but that is the world we live in. At the bottom of all commercials they tell you it is for light - moderate acne.NOT SEVERE I have moderately to moderately severe acne. It works great for me. I knocks out everything minus some nasty cysts, but I have started doryx for that. I have been using ALL THREE STEPS included, EVERY morning and night, EVERY DAY, TWICE A DAY, for TWO MONTHS SOLID. And trust me. It works. I despise when people give bad reviews on great products because they used them incorrectly.

Pros:

Works better than anything I've ever tried
Fast
Easy to do
Able to use day and night--goes on clear
Almost entirely clear skin

Cons:

Flakiness similar to accutane
Lots of initial redness

I love this stuff. Used everything else from accutane many years ago to recently retin-a and tetracycline. Only this has worked. Went from have 2-4 new pimples every day to once a week. Almost entirely clear. Make sure to get a good moisturizer though.

Pros:

-Cleared up my acne within three weeks of use
-Pleasant scent
-Fast shipping
-Customer service was helpful
-Lasts for a while (you don't need to use too much of it at all, just a dime size)

Cons:

-Pricy, AT FIRST! But thanks to customer service, I learned how to manage my shipment to the point where i basically a little more than $10 a month for it, which i will explain later.
-Dried out my face to the point that my skin produced even more oil to compensate

I love Proactiv. I've been using it for 6 years and I love it. Without it, I wouldn't be the confident, happy person that I am today. I had really bad acne in high school ranging from postules to l nodules and it was really hard when most of your friends had either normal to perfect skin and you're without (I would laugh whenever they freaked out about one zit when I had many lol). My mom kept suggesting Proactiv but I thought it was way too expensive. However, after seeing my sister who basically has perfect skin and my friends who only worried about ONE pimple, I finally caved in and got on the phone. I noticed an improvement within 3 weeks. By then, everything was gone. 4 years of acne gone by 3 weeks, I just couldn't believe it but it happened! My skin was (and still is) so smooth and soft! The thing about proactiv is that yes, it is a bit expensive. I pay about $45 EVERY FOUR MONTHS. In other words, they ship and bill me $45 every 4 months so I really spend a little more than $10 every month, which is still expensive, however for something this good it was worth it. The thing that bothered me was that in terms of oil control, my skin wasn't that oily prior to using it. If i remember correctly, I probably had dry skin. After Proactiv, my skin got super oily. It's still oily but that's easily manageable with some blotting sheets. But my acne is gone. I still get a minor break out every once in a while, especially in the Summer or when I'm really stressed out but it disappears quickly. I also noticed that it helped heal my scars. I have skin that bruises and scars easily so I was really impressed that my acne scars faded to the point where you would think I never had acne. The last thing I want to mention is that different people have different skin. So it would make sense that it would work for some and not for others. But it's worth giving a try. I put "moderately severe" because that's how my acne was BEFORE pr

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
