Pros:

IT HAS SOME MERIT. I DEFINATELY NOTICED IMPROVEMENT AND NOTHING ELSE BUT ANTIBIOTICS EVER HELPR=ED ME MUCH BEFORE.

Cons:

A BIT PRICEY!!! THEY REQUIRE AN ORDER AT LEAST EVERY 6 MONTHS TO GET CLUB PRICING AND I DON'T NEED IT THAT OFTEN.

IT TOOK ABOUT TWO WEEKS TO CLEAR MY ACNE UP BUT I HAD IT BAD. I HAVE ROSACEA AND ALTHOUGH IT DOESN'T KEEP ME FROM HAVING ROSACEA "EPISODES" IT KEEPS THE RELATED ACNE IN CHECK VERY WELL. I STILL HAVE REDNESS AND SWELLING OF THE NOSE; I.E. W.C. FIELDS; WHEN THE ROSACEA FLARES BUT UP ONLY ORAL ANTIBIOTICS CAN TREAT AND PREVENT THAT. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY COMPLEXION I HAD TO TAKE THE ANTIBIOTICS EVERY DAY ALONG WITH USING PRESCRIPTION FACIAL WASH, PRESCRIPTION ROSACEA OINTMENT, AND PRESCRIPTION ROSACEA LOTION ALL OF WHICH WERE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. I NOW ONLY USE PROACTIVE AND OCCASIONALLY TAKE ANTIBIOTICS TO COMBAT THE SWELLING OF MY NOSE THAT ROSEACEA CAUSES. AFTER CLEARING UP I ONLY HAVE TO USE PROACTIVE ONCE A DAY AND SOME TIMES SKIP A DAY OF TWO W/O DRASTIC EFFECT. THE PROACTIVE IS PRICEY BUT THE PRESCRIPTON EQUVILENT WAS FAR MORE EXPENSIVE SO IN MY CASE IT IS WORTH IT. I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED ANY IRRITATION FROM THE BENZOYL PEROXIDE BUT I HAVE TOUGH FACE.

Pros:

It smells good, leaves my skin clean

Cons:

gives a tight feeling in the face, dries skin

Proactiv didn't start working "right away" as it promised and I occasionally have a pimple here and there, but it did really improve the look of my skin. The key is to moisturize during the day and to use the products at night. The refining mask really dried out my skin when I used it as a spot treatment, so I wouldn't recommend that, but it works great as a mask!

Pros:

worked really good for a while. cleared up most of my acne

Cons:

but after a couple months, STOPPED WORKING! no matter what i did, it would not clear up my face any more. I had to find a new product.

works good at first, but eventually stops working! Was also kind of pricey, definitely not worth it!

Pros:

none.

Cons:

I used it for 1 year and it didnt work at all.
IT is expensive and it doesnt give results! Many of my friends used proactiv too and it never worked.

Dont buy it its not worth it

Pros:

Some improvement - no longer oily skin

Cons:

Made my face very very red..despite using lotion afterwards, still have blackheads and large pore appearances

I feel like my skin may be a little clearer than it was but the acne is now replaced by redness..I look like I have a permanent sunburn!

Pros:

Worked almost immediately to start controlling my mild - moderate acne (mainly on my cheeks and forehead). Skin is already much smoother and I'm so much more confident after only 2 weeks use.

Cons:

Smell isn't great, and packaging is horrible - no one wants a big blue tube saying 'acne' in their bathroom cabinet! It would be better if it was more subtle. It's also causing some slight dryness on certain parts of my face.

This is working for me overall, but just wondering if the additional peeling and dryness stops at any point? I've been using it a couple of weeks and it is leaving some small dry patches on my face. I'm controlling it with moisturiser, but just wondered whether this is something that will get better as my skin gets used to quinoderm or not?

Cons:

None.

Pros:

It makes my cheeks feel nice and smooth. It maintains small zits on my face, but I don't tend to break out that much.

Cons:

Whenever I DO have my "monthly breakouts" (from hormones, I guess), Proactiv suddenly doesn't seem to work for me. Dries my skin out around my upper lip, nostrils, and between my eyebrows to the point of where it is flaky and embarrassing.

I have combination skin and Proactiv does not do a good job of keeping my skin moisturized while keeping my nose free from oil--in fact, my nose is normally oilier whenever I use Proactiv. It dries my skin out in all of the wrong places and, as I mentioned as a con, it leaves my skin flaky in areas that I can't hide. It doesn't work very well to remove makeup before I go to bed (I take my showers in the morning). I have been using Proactiv for four or five years now, and it seemed to work much better for my skin in the beginning. Plus, whenever I try out a new product on my face, my skin freaks out and breaks out and I have to go back to Proactiv... so it's like I HAVE to use it or else I will face the consequences. I'm currently trying to find another acne product for my face. Sorry to betray you, Proactiv.

Pros:

Proactiv works! It's a simple step by step system. It's less irritating than most products I have tried.

Cons:

It's expensive

Got the starter kit (3 step plus green tea moisturizer and mask). It's definitely effective. After just two days of use, my existing pimples already started getting smaller. After 1-2 weeks of use, pimples that have been there for months are now flat and gone. I'll spend the money on this, rather than wasting my money time and time again on products that don't work.

Pros:

It works fine for my husband.

Cons:

For some people it makes acne worse.

It made a few occassional blemishes erupt into all-over acne. The acne caused by ProActive does not clear up in a few days like a mild blemish would, it is terrible. I've only suffered from severe acne two different times in my life and both times were after attempting to use ProActive. I tried it about 15 years ago and was devestated by the results. I took a chance and tried it again after my husband purchased the trial offer. UGH! Never again!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
