An awful experience

Cons:

Made my acne worse
Dried my skin
A painful burning sensation

In the summer of 2013 I went on holiday to Spain which was so lovely, apart from the fact that I broke out quite a bit, more than I had before. I didn't really think much of it as I thought it was just sensitive skin reacting to the sun cream which I didn't end up using again. When I came home my Mum took me to the doctors who prescribed me with the Epiduo Gel. All he said to apply a pea size amount every night before bed and then come back in 3 months to get more Gel and that my acne would be gone by then. This never happened. In the first week of using Epiduo my skin got very red, irritated and extremely dry. My whole face burned like I have never experienced before. I cried a couple of nights because it hurt that bad. After another week the burning calmed down but my skin was still extremely dry. I'd never moisturised before as I naturally have rather oily skin, but I ended up trying 'Nivea Rich Moisturising Day Cream' but didn't really like it (it was too rich for my skin) but it did help with the dryness. I next went onto the 'Simple Light Moisturiser' which I love and still use to this day. That helped a lot with the dryness. But anyway, as the days went on my skin got worse and worse to a point I was crying every day and started having panic attacks before and after school thinking that I would get judged for how my skin now looked as before the summer holidays my skin was fine. My acne started to get worse all around my right cheek and I would get those really big lumpy type of spots quite a bit which really hurt and left awful scarring. For the seven whole weeks of using Epiduo I was crying everyday and I eventually couldn't take it any longer. I couldn't see any signs of my skin improving in the next couple of weeks so my doctor, my parents and myself agreed that it wasn't working. I haven't used Epiduo in nearly two weeks now and my skin is so much better than it was. I am now taking an antibiotic everyday along with my 5% Quinoderm cream which I apply to the needed area morning and night. I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser to wash my face morning and night before I apply my Quinoderm and I use the Simple Light Moisteriser in the morning after I apply the cream. My skin is better than it was, it's not great yet but I have only been on this routine for a week. Overall Epiduo did not work for me, but it works for others. I just need to keep my head high and hope for the best. Good luck everyone.

worth it!

Pros:

clears skin
controls oil

Cons:

VERY DRY SKIN, AND FLAKY PATCHES
takes a while to work (a month for my skin)
expensive

I have been using epiduo (tactuo) for about 5 weeks. i am 21 years old. I used to have mild to moderate acne and i have been on birth control since i was 16 so i know my acne probably isnt hormonal. my skin was pretty clear when i was 18 but was never consistently clear. I had always used benzoyl peroxide every night because i always had at least 1-2 blemishs. Then last year at age 20 my skin completley went crazy and broke out all over in big red cyst like acne and whiteheads. i had at least 10 pimples all the time and i hated it . i tried everything from salicylic acid to different brands of benzyl peroxide to prescription antibiotic topical treatments to 1% tretinoin. finally tried epiduo as last step before i was going to beg for accutane. Epiduo made my skin WORSE for the first month and sooo dry litterly my face stung like acid was being thrown on it (and i have quite oily skin normally) i am using epiduo EVERY NIGHT even though my face felt like it was on fire. Now in week 5 my skin is finally clearing up magically all at once all my pimples are shrunken to flat red smooth scars.. (better then acne) and i hope it will just continue to get better and better. I still have dry flakes around my mouth and cheeks (i probabaly used too much epiduo becuase i just wanted the pimples to go away) But this treatment IS WORTH IT even though there are more cons then pros, in the end we all just want clear skin right? and in my opinion, no one should use antibiotics for acne if your dr. tries to give you them do your research, it does more harm then good, especially oral antibiotics.

Great for moderate acne!

Pros:

Clears acne

Cons:

Expensive
Smells horrible

I got epiduo when I was 16. My doctor prescribed me epiduo because I was getting moderate acne on my chin and T-zone. It didn't work very well the first two weeks or so, but it started working after that. The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because it's $70 WITH insurance, and it smells HORRIBLE, I don't recommend putting this anywhere near your nose, because you'll be able to smell it all day. Other than those two things, it's a great product!

cleared up my acne

Pros:

works well

Cons:

drying

I had moderate acne that responded pretty well to benzoyl peroxide, but the amount of benzyl peroxide I used never really cleared me up, and I couldn't use any more because of the dryness it caused. My skin isn't perfect, I still have a few pimples, but it's a lot better, and it even seems to dry out my face less than the benzyl peroxide. It's certainly the best treatment I've ever tried and I'm very grateful I found it.

Not Very Effective

Pros:

Cleared blackheads
Subdued Oily Skin

Cons:

Itchiness
Redness

I think Epiduo is very overrated. This was my second prescription topical gel I was given by my doctor. I used it religiously and hoped against all hope. I even used Cetaphil face wash like they recommend and used moisturizer. All I got from Epiduo was itchy, blotchy skin. I really thought this would work on my moderately severe acne, but unfortunately it struck out. Luckily I was able to get it with the coupon, so it was fairly cheap.

Great!!

Pros:

Cleared Acne
Good for everyday
Side effects go away after a couple of weeks

Cons:

Flaking
After treatment, my skin is red

I am 13, and for about a year or two I struggled with acne. I literally was obsessed with my skin. I was spending my free time looking up reviews of products and trying everything from cheap drug store products to expensive department store one and getting facials with my own money. All I can say is stop wasting your time and money looking for other products other than Epiduo. It took me a couple of months to start working and I'm happy to say that face is acne free. I was also using another product that I got from my Dermatologist called Ziana which was amazing also. I have to admit that my skin is a little more red than usual after using this wonderful product, but it can easily be concealed with a BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Please! If you are like me and have tried everything than get to your nearest dermatologist. It will change your life and give you so much more confidence. Epiduo Works!!!!

Good

Pros:

cleared my skin significantly
easy to use

Cons:

bleached clothes
some sensitivity

I used this in conjunction with Doxy, so this is really a review of both together (I will also post under that product). I saw improvement in my skin in a week, although it took about 6-8 weeks to clear as best it could. When I upped my doxy I saw further improvement. I am moving on to accutane, becuase I cannot use this on my back or shoulders due to bleaching, but if you only suffer facial acne I really recomend it as I am almost totally clear. I also recomend it for teenagers who may be suffering hormal acne - I am 26 and show no signs of clearing so really want something permanent., but for teens who may clear up in time, this is less dramatic than accutane and may be sufficient.

Temporary Relief
No. This cleared up my skin for about three months, and the acne started coming back. This product has made my skin so oily and dehydrated. I regret trying it... it's one of the products that started my long line of medications for acne.

Nope.

Pros:

Got free trial sizes from GP

Cons:

Burning, itching, peeling, redness, drying
Took about a month for my skin to recover
Can't tolerate with sensitive skin

If you have any degree of sensitive skin, please save yourself the pain and do not use this product. I should have predicted the outcome I would have with this medication because I can't tolerate BP. So, BP and retinol together....Nope. Not good. I felt like my skin was melting off my face. I had extreme redness, drying, itching, peeling, and burning. I was using this product on my forehead, so it must have gotten into the area around my eyes which hurt so badly I was in tears for days. No moisturizer could remedy the damage this product caused at that time. LIke I sad, bad bad bad for sensitive skin!

Too harsh on sensitive skin.

Pros:

BP does zap zits well

Cons:

intense burning/stinging
bleaches towels and clothes
severe rednes

This was the first topical my original derm prescribed for me - later, I left him because he would prescribe something new without asking me more details about what was going on (e.g. if my acne was related to my period, how sensitive my skin was, what products I had used before). BP alone is far too much for my skin, and adding more to it only made it worse. I stuck it out for a little over two weeks, until the pain even from just water touching my face was too intense. So though I blame my Epiduo fiasco partially on my derm, the product itself may have cleared my acne minorly, but the resulting intense redness and sensitivity weren't worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
