This approach has never worked for me. I recently bought the acne kit from the seabucktorn company (SBT) and totally broke out. The bar of soap was so alkaline - how could it not break you out? It disrupted the acid mantle that is natural on the skin's surface and prevents bacteria from running rampant. I was also using the seabuckthorn oil but Im not sure if I had simply used this alone whether or not I would have broken out but I suspect yes. In any event, NEVER use a product that is alkaline. Skin should be slightly acidic and this will prevent breakouts or at least prevent your acne from worsening. Unfortunately the natural approach has never worked for me. I do have a somewhat natural sensitive skin cleanser but nothing with the oils mentioned in this post. I also use products by Juvena (expensive Swiss line) and its the only thing that works for me unfortunately.

I guess everyone has different experiences depending on their skin sensitivity. So for those who are sensitive like me, beware. Doesn't hurt to try but don't buy into the it gets better before it gets worse because even if this is the case - the stage where it gets worse should not last very long.

I was skeptical at first, but I thougth, why not - I've tried everything else. I have been doing the OCM for the last month and all I can say is WOW!!! I use jojoba oil and I love it because I can change the mixture according to how my skin is acting. With my monthly breakout all I do is increase the castor oil for a few days and so far, I haven't seen as many breakouts. If I do, just some BP and that's all. Of course, while I increase the castor oil, my skin is drier, I just use the jojoba oil as an extra bit of moisturizer. My skin looks and feels awesome and my makeup is staying on longer.

I am really excited to try this method. I've heard of it before and now is the time to just dive right in - I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain - that hopefully being clear health skin.

I've actually had pretty decent skin over the last few years but prior to that I had been haunted by cystic acne. Even accutane didn't clear it completely but it did make it better. For the last couple of months, my skin has gotten worse and I have been trying this product and that product. As a last ditch attempt, I tried ProActive again and if anything it made my skin worse. I think that in the end, I've been over stripping my skin as I was a faithful follower of glycolic products which exfoliated my skin which I was until recent, using with Proactive. As a result for the last 4wks I have had some serious cystic breakouts that are really impacting me. It doesn't help that at work I sweat I lot (physical job) and it doesn't help that I forget to drink my fluids but this has got to change.

I've been through this site lots over the last number of years and signed up tonight excited by embarking on a more natural method of cleansing my skin. I'll update you and let you know how it turns out:

My acne type: moderate cystic with red scarring

My skin type: combination

Previously using: Proactive systeml; Reversa 4% glycolic day moisturizer with spf 15; Reversa 8% glycolic night cream; Mela-D serum for red acne scaring; BP 2%; aspirin masks (just recent)

Now I'm putting this all alway and am going to try: 75% jojoba 25% castor with about 20 drops of lavendar oil; ACV toner; aspirin masks once per week

I hope to keep you up to date with how this turns out! So excited!

I have an oily skin and so I have to wash my face atleast three times a day. I generally use an oil free face wash. I also clean my face with a good cleanser daily, which help to remove the dirt from the face.

okay i just came in here because i wanted to thank you. im normally a person thats in the background reading the posts and trying stuff out (as you can see from my post count lol). This method and the other methods that are listed on your post have improved my face dramatically.

i must say i use the ocm method maybe one time a week but your aspirin mask is by far the best combination for just getting the gunk out of my pores. i use to have a lot of ingrown bumps that would lead to large cyst because i never knew how to get rid of them.

But this mask just got rid of them in about 5 days!!! my face has never looked this good (since the age 14 before acne) and now im 25!!

and i thank you for the information on how i can control my acne and improve my complexion. By the way i use to breakout at least two or three times a week and it has been about 3 weeks now on this regimen a little early but no breakouts at all as of yet. so my regimen right now has been:

morning:

wash my face with water

use the acv & aspirin mix toner

moisrurize with jojoba oil

night:

aspirin & green tea mask

use the acv & aspirin mix toner

moisturize with jojoba oil

This is the best my face has looked and felt.

I just started using OCM and was hoping for some pointers.

I have pretty severe acne, although it definitely ranges from mild-severe, i'm not quite sure what aggravates it although i suspect stress is a large player. I used to use stuff from the dermatologist including salicylic acid and duac gel, which i believe has benzol peroxide. Then in December i switched cold turkey to natural skin care.

For the past 6 months this has been my routine: Night: wash my face with castille soap or tea tree oil soap, apply a warm green tea bag on blemishes, and rinse with some green tea, mist on an apple-cider vinegar and herbal tea toner, use an apple cider vinegar and clove essential oil spot treatment, and then apply a hazlenut oil blend with various essential oils. I also use a raw fall honey and cinnamon mask when i get the chance, after washing and before toning etc. and sometimes put some queen helene mint mask as a spot treatment overnight. In the morning i am usually rushed so i put on some fresh aloe vera gel with lemon and tea tree EE in it.

I also cut gluten out of my diet a few weeks ago, and i eat well and excercise. Regarless of all my efforts, my skin recently EXPLODED with blemishes - went absolutely insane - and in a frantic internet search on how to treat it naturally i discovered OCM and it seems like a wonderful idea!

Now that i have discovered OCM, i don't know what i should keep and what i should throw away from my old routine. Obviously the soap has gotta go, but green tea has been something that works better than most things for me. Do you think it would still work after OCM? What about a honey mask? and would is be bad to use all that vinegar after using oil, since they repel eachother? And do you suggest that u just use the hazelnut oil blend as one of the oils in the OCM mix, or continue to apply it as a moisturizer/cream after washing toning etc? I find that OCM does leave my skin a bit dry so i've been using it like that, but i am just using castor oil and grapeseed oil at the moment because that's all i have on hand in my dorm, when i go home on thursday i will have acess to jojoba and EVOO.

Well that's a lot of questions..i guess a blanket question (so to speak) would be, how is OCM different than other cleansing methods as far as using treatments after it goes? When i was using soap i absolutely had to put a bunch of soothing stuff on my face to replace the oil i just stripped, but now that i am practicing OCM, should i be worried about the honey mask or green tea or any other kind of mask that may no be so gentle (such as a clay mask or the queen helene mint mask?) washing off the oil i just put on? I am used to applying oil as the last step in my skincare routine, so i am not sure how to handle using it as a first step!

Also, you mentioned Concha Nacar Bleach Cream in this post and it seems pretty awesome, but does it actually bleach your skin? or does washing it off stop it from doing so? and would you ever use that after washing with OCM?

Sorry to ask sooo many questions but you seem to be very knowledgeable and i am desperate for answers. my skin has never been this bad (or do i say that every time it is this bad?) and it makes me very sad to be so embarrassed by my skin that i do not want to interact with anyone. I wanted to see a naturopathist or something but my insurance will not cover it, so, let the blogging begin (as you may be able to tell i am new to blogging...this is my first post ever!)

Thanks very much!

i used a blend of apricot oil and grapeseed oil from Silk Naturals. The first week was great. I could feel plugs coming out. Then about two weeks later I started breaking out. I took a break and continued one month later when the zits cleared up. But then I started breaking out worst than before and now I have a huge cyst on one cheek as we speak.

Did you use any castor oil because, from what i understand, castor oil is the keystone of OCM as it penetrates the pores and does the actual cleansing. If you just used apricot and grapseed then that may explain your skin's negative reaction because you were not actually cleansing it, you were just oiling it lol. Unless you were using castor oil, in which case this may have been "purging" (which i don't really understand) or you weren't wiping it off properly or it just wasn't for you. everyone's different, just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents

Hey Barnabas, thank you for the post. I just started using OCM. Like a lot of users on this site, I've tried a lot of different treatments and also tried Dermalinfusion which is similar to microdermabrasion, but is injected with a fluid which I can't recall the full details unfortunately. However, this did work good, but is quite expensive.

I decided to try this out and so far I'm on my second day. I notice my skin is well moisturized, but I noticed I started to break out a bit more. This may be cause it's drawing out the cyst that I've had an issue with before and flares out once in awhile. I'll continue to post as the days/weeks progress. Hopefully it gets better.

I've picked up the following items:

- Castor oil

- Jojoba oil

- Extra Virgin Olive oil

- Apple Cider Vinegar

Morning and night I use; 1 tblspn of castor oil, 2 tblspn's of evoo, 1 tblspn of jojoba oil and a few drops of tea tree oil.

Other nights I'll use; 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of water and 1/2 of evoo

what are you saying?!

" The ratio of castor oil to EVOO will vary depending on the person. The typical starting ratio is 50/50 castor oil to EVOO. For oily or acne-prone skin, a ratio of 75% castor oil to 25% EVOO will work better. For dry or flaky skin, a ratio 25% castor oil to 75% EVOO is go" ??

do not try that! do you underestand how much castor oil that is? that is going to dry everybodys skin out if theyr listening to you! you got the the other way buddy the MOST castor oil ANYbody should use is 25% and the rest a moisturizing oil, and thats 4 people with oily skin! if you have dry skin its is 10% castor oil my friends.fix ur facts please we dont want anyones acne to get worse

I cringed as soon as I read this last night, I used it this morning, and I love it. I had to use a very small ammount of gentle soap to get rid of the oil residue, but this felt great. My skin, befor today, was both very oily and very dry as well as raw. After using thi, my skin is less red, less chaped, and more blackhead free. The only downside I saw is that it brings any active zits to a head, which is gross. However, they heal up after a couple hours.

I had the same thing happen, I tried this probably over a year ago. I got the weird bumpy rash and my chin has NEVER cleared up since. I now have pimples on my chin constantly. I wish I had never tried this. I did it for about a week.

How often do you use the OCM? The only time that you should ever do this more than once a day is durring thecolder seasons and if you live in a tropical climate you should never use it twice daily.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been doing OCM for about a week and I'm breaking out all over my forehead. At first they started out as small skin colored bumps and now they've matured into papules. The OCM was doing wonders for me but it just went all wrong. I dont know whether this has to do with anything but I think it's because I wasn't just steaming my face with a washtowel, I was steaming my face directly with boiling water and a towel over my head while I had the OCM mixture on my face. Should I continue with the OCM the recommended way? Or should I just go back to the regimen?

Hi guys. I've been reading this thread and lurking on this board and it seems like it's causing more problems that it's helping. There also seems to be a pattern in that OCM works great for a while, even several weeks, but then the user inevitably ends up breaking out worse than before. Is this because acne takes up to several weeks to break out while it builds up under the skin, hence why so many people using OCM break out days, weeks and even a couple months after they start using it from the extra oil that's built up? I have moderate acne, usually on my cheeks and BP doesn't seem to work on me. That or my skin has developed an immunity. I've been using DDF's Sulfur Mask as a mask and a spot treatment and so far it's the only thing that's helped. I still have bumps near my chin and I get a pimple like once a week or every two weeks, but not as bad as before. I also have a lot of brown spots (hyperpigmentation) since my skin is olive tone. The problem with the sulfur is that it really dries out the acne but it also leaves a scar since I think it overdries even when I don't pick at it. OCM seemed like a really good idea but now I'm really wary of trying it since it seems to mostly make matters worse. Has anyone tried OCM REGULARLY and CONSISTENTLY for extended periods of time--as in, say, more than 6 months, and had good results?

Also, your acne regimens are slightly mind-boggling. I didn't realize there were so many things you could put on your face.

Would it be fine just to use jojoba oil itself? I usually just use jojoba oil to "exfoliate" my skin by putting some on my hands and gently rubbing it on my face, and 10 minutes later, washing it off.

Please do not try this stupid ass OCM.

I finally cleared up my skin (after a long battle) and had a few blackheads that I wanted to get rid of. I was too cheap to buy BHA's and thought that this sounded like a good idea.

For the first few weeks it worked well, and removed the blackheads - I was pretty happy with the results.

3-4 weeks later - My skin broke out in cysts, lots of cysts.

6-8 weeks later - All over my face I now have hundreds of small fleshy bumps which makes my skin texture look horrible. My skin is red and irritated looking and I am getting new acne all the time.

This is easily the worst thing I have done to my skin and I would advise everybody to try anything and everything before you touch this

When I first started this I was horrified as I decided to use olive oil and castor. I started developing very large cyst like bumps on my skin. I then said, being as brave as I am, I'll switch to Jojoba and Castor. This is a much better combo for my skin. I saw gunk coming out and although my nose is oily right now, I believe it is that purging stage where the body is trying to naturally restore its balance. I will be trying the jojoba and castor for the rest of the week. I already see good results. However, if your skin is like mine do NOT use olive oil. Better yet jump straight into jojoba and save yourself the hassle. Already purchased the olive oil? Mix it with some vinegar and make yourself a salad or dip in bread but don't waste your time with it on your face / body.

Oh forgot to mention I am using 25/75 ratio of castor to jojoba. Good luck!

Introduction

I have stopped buying commercial cleansers and toners for my face and basically switched to an all natural way to clean my face called the Oil Cleansing Method. My skin has NEVER LOOKED BETTER and since I've started I haven't had any breakouts. People of all skin types with all sorts of different issues (including acne) use the OCM and love it.

The Oil Cleansing Method/OCM

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAA

Preface

OK, this might sound scary to some of you but this cleansing method uses OIL directly applied to your face. Are you cringing yet? lol It breaks down like this: A common misconception concerning oil and acne is that oil causes acne. This is not true. Oil alone does not cause acne--other factors like age, hormones and prolonged clogging of the pores of trapped bacteria, dead skin cells and dirt are the actual contributors to acne. The sebum your skin naturally creates is there to protect and heal it. Ideally, oil is GOOD for your skin.

Water cannot dissolve oil, so the vast majority of today's cleansers and toners use chemicals to strip your skin of its oil which irritates it and causes it to produce MORE oil as a result. So why do SO many acne-related products say "oil-free"? Because the oil-acne myth is universally celebrated and sworn by and selling their products using the "oil-free" gimmick makes companies more money.

Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that "like dissolves like." The best way to desolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne--while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

If you have severe or cystic acne, I recommend going to a dermatologist before you try anything else, including OCM, and working with one to find the best medical solutions for you.

Getting Started

The basic OCM blend is of castor oil and extra virgin olive oil. Castor oil is fantastic at drawing dirt, bacetria and other nasty stuff trapped in your pores, while healing your skin. Extra virgin olive oil works as a moisturizer and is fortified with antioxidants.

The ratio of castor oil to EVOO will vary depending on the person. The typical starting ratio is 50/50 castor oil to EVOO. For oily or acne-prone skin, a ratio of 75% castor oil to 25% EVOO will work better. For dry or flaky skin, a ratio 25% castor oil to 75% EVOO is good.

However, you should find the right blend for you. A lot of OCM users cut out the EVOO all together--especially those with oily or acne-prone skin, since it is a heavier oil and in rare cases has even caused people to break out. Many people replace it with other oils like Grapeseed oil, which is light, quick to absorb and is known for its astringent properties. Jojoba oil is another popular choice because it is a great natural moisturizer, is non-comedogetic and mimics the skin's own natural sebum. Other popular oils are Avocado oil, Apricot Kernal oil and Evening Primrose oil--all have extremely low pore-clogging probabilities.

I use 60% castor oil, 20% grapeseed oil and 20% jojoba oil. I also add Tea Tree oil, which is a great antiseptic and is popularly used as treatment for acne. Another great oil to use for acne-prone/oily skin is Hazelnut oil, which I, personally, will be trying out next (swapping out the grapeseed for it).

How to do OCM

  • You take some of your oil blend and massage it into your face (have you fainted, yet?). Do it gently and avoid scrubbing because that can be irritating to your skin.
  • Then, you take a washcloth dampened in warm to hot water (depending on your tolerance--but don't burn yourself!) and drape it over/hold it up to your face and leave it there until it's around room temperature. What you're doing is steaming your face and opening your pores so the castor oil can draw out the dirt and dead skin cells and the other oil(s) can condition your skin. Take this time to relax or unwind.
  • After you're done, gently massage the oil on your face again to free all of the trapped dirt and dead skin cells. Rinse off your washcloth, wring it out and steam your face again. This can be repeated as many times as you like, depending on how much time you have on your hands. It may take you a few OCM sessions to get your routine down and maximize your time efficiency.
  • When you've finished steaming, rinse off your washcloth, wring it out and gently start wiping the oil away. This gets rid of the dirt and dead skin cells you have freed that can lead to acne. Depending on how freaked out you are by now, you can rinse the washcloth off and keep wipe again to make sure the excess oil is off of your face. Then, splash your face with cold water to close your pores and then pat your face dry.

Notes

There are two different types of oil for OCM: Carrier oils and Essential oils. Carrier oils (or "fixed oils") are good base oils to penetrate your skin and maximize the delivery of essential oils. Essential oils are strong, concentrated oils, commonly extracted from botanicals and fruit, that are used in small amounts and heavily diluted in other (carrier/base) oils. Different oils of both carrier and essential have their own preferred uses and benefits for different types of skin issues. Essential oils are not a necessity for OCM to work, as carrier oils already do a great job at it, but if you like experimenting or want to tailor your blend further for your own skin, using the right essential oils may be beneficial.

Castor oil, Extra Virgin Olive oil, Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil and Hazelnut oil are classified amongst carrier/fixed oils. Other oils like Tea Tree oil are essential oils.

OCM is also, apparently, great for removing makeup (apply the oil directly over the makeup).

The best part of OCM? Your face is not greasy afterward and it is properly moisturized--no more need for irritating chemical toners and astringents or those crappy moisturizers that just add chemicals to your skin which clogs your pores. If you do find that your skin starts to become a little on the dry side (which does happen with some people), try using a very small dab of EVOO or Jojoba over your face after cleansing and/or cut down on the castor oil and increase the other oils.

Some people prefer to steam their face using other methods. I know many people will massage the oil onto their face when they jump in the shower, do the rest of their routine and let the steam from the shower do the work and then wipe off their face as their last step. My boyfriend does his OCM this way and he usually has pretty behaved skin except for blackheads all over his nose. After just a couple of weeks since starting OCM himself, his face is looking fantastic now and his blackheads are almost gone completely.

Note: If you have acne and your existing pimples look red and irritated after you're done, don't freak out. This just means that the pores on which they reside have been opened and drained of their gunk. Be patient. With just a little persistence, your skin will clear and will have the proper conditions for healing itself.

Some people OCM morning and evening and some do it only in the morning or only in the evening and others do it a couple to several times a week--while just using water to rinse their face off when they're not OCMing. You can decide what works best for you.

If you've got nothing left to lose or you're brave enough to try something new, I seriously recommend the OCM.

I've been using OCM for weeks now and my zits have pretty much vanished. What I love is that my skin is all tame and glowy and all of that other good stuff now--all the time. I do it every night and in the morning I usually put on my Concha Nacar cream and/or just rinse my face off good with warm water and a washcloth. OCM as my major life-saver, In conjunction with the small number of other treatments and products I use, my skin is now virtually clear, healing more every day, improving in tone and texture and making me happier with it than I ever have been.

----------------------------------------

Other things I use/do for my skin:

Concha Nacar

For extra deep cleaning of my pores, treating the occasional blemish, aiding in reducing the severity of post-acne marks and improving my skin tone, quality and texture in general, I use this all-natural cream called Concha Nacar, by a small Latin American company, which is a treatment that utilizes Mother of Pearl/Oyster Shell Powder, among a short list of only six, simple, great, natural ingredients that are beneficial to the skin. Mother of Pearl has been used by native Latin Americans and the Chinese for centuries for the treatment of an array of skin issues and general beautifying of the skin. I usually use this in the morning, but it's not rare that I use it at night before cleansing, either. My post about it is here:

ACV Toner

After cleansing, I use a homemade, all-natural toner consisting primarily of Apple Cider Vinegar and Green Tea. It also utilizes a little bit of aspirin. It is fantastic at balancing my skin, reducing redness, controlling shine, drying up any blemishes and evening out my skin tone. My post about it (as well as the recipe) is here:

Aspirin Tea Mask

Aspirin breaks down into a wonderful beta-hydroxy acid which is oil-soluble and excellent at penetrating pores beneath the sebum and dissolving/exfoliating dead skin cells. I combine it with the leaves from a bag of Green Tea, which is high in essential anti-oxidants that protect against harmful agents and stimulate circulation which is good for healing and skin tone. After I rinse this mask off, my skin is soft, bright, even-toned and fresh looking. My post about it is here:

I was so excited to try this and now I am horrified. I have the worst acne I have ever had in all my life. My skin is full of red bumps below my skin and I could play connect the dots with all the whiteheads. I reduced the castor oil.

This has been for about a week. Is this regular purging? If so, how long is it supposed to be?

I really want to try this, but i'm not sure how you use it and when ..

so, do I stop using my regular cleanser? and use the oil and massage my face..then do I need to wash it off or what?

and can I still put toner after? then night cream ?

I was excited about this method as well, but OMG it has broken me out horribly. This is one of the worst breakouts I have ever experienced in my life! I used this method for about 3 weeks. My skin was about 90% clear before with the occasional hormonal cyst on my chin and clogged pores/ blackheads on my nose and chin. Nothing I couldn't deal with. Now, after having used this OCM I have about 5 painful, inflamed cysts on my chin! I'm embarrassed to leave the house and am horribly depressed due to this. I wish I never tried OCM!!! I was using 3:1 grapeseed oil & castor oil. I am now back to my original routine (the one that had me 90% clear) Oil of Olay sensitive skin fash wash, Mario Badescu Cucumber toner, & EpiDuo gel. I hope I can get my skin back to normal (for me). This sucks!

I have actually tried this, but I was horribly scared due to how my face felt afterward lol. I actually used olive oil, then oatmeal+honey, then lemon. My skin felt ridiculously oily still, even though I did this in the shower with water running on my face. I had to rinse with a pea size of soap. I was really scared of how oily my face felt. A bit over kill now that I think about it.

The olive oil definitely made my face really soft though lol.

Using ONLY lemon has worked for me though.

Here are my threads:

I've been incorporating this into my version of "The Regimen" I just use OCM in place of the cleanser, and then follow up with BP and moisturizer as usual. OCM on its own does seem to balance out my skin oil production, but it does nothing to improve my acne, and I wouldn't use it on its own for that purpose (just like I wouldn't expect results from using any other facial cleanser by itself.)

A question for Barnabas (or any other guys who use OCM) how do you incorporate it into your shaving routine, if you do at all? I prefer do do both in the evening since both OCM and my shaving routine are somewhat time-consuming I wetshave with a DE blade. I've been wondering about the best way to do them both without irritating my skin any more than is necessary. And before anyone suggests it, switching to an electric razor is not something I'm interested it I can't stand the noise they make, they don't get as close as a blade, and my skin's actually been looking better since I started wetshaving correctly (using glycerin soap + a badger hair brush instead of canned shaving cream.) Any thoughts?
