Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

Clears up skin, unclogs pores and gets rid of blackheads

Cons:

Makes skin flaky and sensitive to strong rubbing or firm squeezing.

I love this stuff. I was using BP for the longest time, but this stuff is soooooo much better. I suffered more from blackheads and whiteheads and this was the right product for me. BP was okay, but it really didn't do anything to clear out my blackheads and it even caused the little inflamed acne I would get to be huge and painful. Since I've been using Neutrogena's Retin-A, my skin has had very very very few problems. I first started with the 0.05% cream. It worked well to smooth out my face, but I noticed that I would still get blackheads, especially around the T-zone. After a few months, my derm switched me to the 0.04% gel. The gel really helped to get rid of the blackheads. I've now incorporated the 0.1% gel into my regiment, but only use it once every 4 days and it does add to the effectiveness of my regiment. However, the 0.1% cream alone is way to strong for me. I suffered from light to moderate acne before. I'm a medium-toned African-American male.

Pros:

smooth skin, scars are slowly fading, 70% clearer at 2 months=way less breakouts

Cons:

Initial breakout was horrible, but I knew the gunk had to come out anyways. It took about a month to nicely go away and I had 2 cysts on both sides of my chin come up twice and then finally clear. (SUCKED!!) IB leaves bad scars!

brings pimple to head faster and heals faster, after the IB - I wanted to stop because my face looked so bad (broke out more than I ever have in my life) my first week of college but I stuck with it anyways after reading about it. I am glad I did because now my face looks SO much better and with some makeup (to cover up scars) I have very mild acne compared to moderate almost severe(?) TRY IT.. (if you are in school- during summer/winter break) oh yeah clears blackheads too, wait 20 min after washing face to apply at night skin is a lot more sensitive though so don't try to squeeze blackheads, it will make those red marks that you can't cover up

Pros:

Helps buff off the to layer of your skin to reveal the acne that was hiding deep under your skin. Improves your acne after the initial break out. Lightens scars.

Cons:

You must ONLY apply it to the infected area or you might risk dryness, redness, and peeling around your eyes, the angles of your nose, nostrils, around your mouth..etc.

I had really smooth clear skin until I started highschool. I guess it was the stress and extra activities I'm doing, but I started to break out horribly. My mother has spent so much money trying to find things that work; I almost gave up even. Then I started the Tretinoin and at first I was a little skeptical. My skin peeled and I broke out; but isn't that what its supposed to do? Your body is trying to get rid of the old skin, so just be aware your skin will have to worsen to get better. It actually does do what its supposed to. Before starting consult your dermatologist to prescribe and explain what its for and how much you should use based on what type of skin to use and the percentage you should take. Don't quit after the first few days, your skin is adjusting to this new medication. It isn't used to what you're doing to it. Let it settle in for approximately 3 months. I use this product ever other day transitioning between Tretinoin and Merderma.

Pros:

I use Tretinoin %0.01 for my mixed skin type + eczema. Smooths skin. Repairs fine wrinkles. Dissolves blackheads. Nearly eliminates whiteheads. Fixes in-grown hair and razor bumps (I use it 10 hours after aftershave).

Cons:

Makes skin very sensitive to sunlight, wind and temperatures. While tanning is impossible on Vitamin A Acid (you will burn after 10 minutes in peak sun, even with cream), it does successfully reverse long term sun damage.

Try it. Try to last through the first 14 days of peeling sensitivity and irritation. Use moisturizer and make sure you are not exposed to the sun.

Pros:

Cleared up complexion, MAJOR IMPROVEMENT! Brighter skin, and extremely smoother.

Cons:

The first month or two is absolute HELL! it feels like your face is going to melt off if you dont get off it. No amount of lotion makes you feel better, only worse, but trust me, do NOT STOP. This stuff really works no lies.

Stay on it!! IF you get off and get back on the cycle will start all over again. That was my mistake, don't make it yours. It wiilll be sooooooo worth it in the end.

Pros:

IT WORKS! Smooth Skin. Tiny barely visible new pimple maybe once every other week if at all. Skin is Brighter and better than its been in 2years!

Cons:

My skin is oilier and it took close to 3 months to work.

These results were worth the wait! I was sad reading these bad reviews but I stuck with it because my Doctor told me it would work. I broke out for almost 8 weeks but I could tell my skin was changing for the better in a weird optimistic way lol. I experienced mild peeling so I exfoliated with crushed aspirin mixed with a mild cleanser which helped alot! I didn't experience harsh burning because my doctor was INTELLIGENT enough to start me out with the mildest retin-a (0.025% cream) and then bumped me up to the 4% retin a micro after a month in a half. My skin looks GREAT now and I feel so happy and blessed when I look in the mirror. My boyfriend told me that my skin looks beautiful :) I go out and I don't need makeup anymore and it takes me about an hour less of maintenence when I go out! I just hope that this message helps someone like me. Just have fait, Acne is stressful and painful. I wish you all the best

Pros:

Cleared all after 33 days. But still lot of marks/scars on my face. How long will this take ?

Cons:

Very dry skin and flaky around chin, sensitive to sun, burning feeling when I apply moisturizer. The treatment is so long that I am not sure whether I made the right decision to use Stieva. May be I was better off without this.

Adult Acne: Never had acne in my life. Started with medium acne condition. 10- 15 pimples on my forehead and under the skin surface. Aug 10 - Went to see a doctor. Started on Stieva A (Tretinoin 0.025%) Aug 24 ' Went to see the same doctor again. Prescribed Erythromycin but asked me to wait two more weeks to start. First three weeks - very bad condition, more pimples and bigger in size. Forehead and chin were the worst. Aug 26 ' Went to see another doctor. I was prescribed Bezaclin and told not to use Stieva A if not effective. But I've read here that people have used both tretinoin and Benzaclin at the same time. So I took the risk and used both. Benzaclin in morning and tretinoin at night. Aug 31 - Saw little improvement but lot of pimples still under the skin. Sept 6 ' Started Erythromycin. Twice a day Sept 13 ' Cleared all. In Canada, it is so hard to get to see the specialist unless it is life threatening. Thanks to this website. I got m

Awful month but there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I faced problems with acne through all my life and now, with 26 years old, I'm still with the same issues (the only notable difference is where the pimples grow). I have adult acne (hormonal acne) and this condition started to really bother me at the beginning of October; I was with 5-6 cystic pimples in my chin and left cheek. So I decided to seek for a 'birthcontrol pill' free treatment (side effects sucks) and went to the dermatologist. She prescribed me 100 mg of spironolactone and topic tretinoin 0,25mg/g with clindamycin fosfate 12mg/g. I was really excited to get rid of this problem, but actually, It just get worse. I've had the WORST breakout ever (a lot of cystic acne and some pustules), and was facing dizziness and fainting sensations due spironolactone. The conclusion: the side effects of spironolactone&tretinoin were worse than taking birthcontrol pills. Through all the month, I was sad, kind of depressed and with painful acne. Last week I visited my dermatologist and my gynecologist, I'm now taking Diane-35 (hopefully I'll switch the pill in the future), a lower dosage of spironolactone (50 mg), doxycycline (100 mg) and topic tretinoin. Since then, I had zero breakouts and the appearance of my skin is slowling improving, so yes, I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Apart from the prescribed drugs, I've made some daily changes that also seem to have helped. I'm using FPS 60 (I was using FPS 30 before) and I always manage to cover my face when I'm outdoor, I'm really engaged in moisturizing my skin and this really helps!!!!! I'm using this gel moisturizer with thermal water, 2 times a day. Also, it's REALLY important that your skin is completely dry when you are applying tretinoin. Finally, I'm trying to avoid dairy products (so sad). To put it shortly: if you're having a bad time with tretinoin, try to moisturize your face frequently, use high FPS sunblocks and apply tretinoin only when your skin is dry. And also, keep in mind that stress affects your acne situation and the picture can really get worse (try to relax). Hope it helps. (Sorry for my english, I'm from Brazil :) ).

What is the moisturizer called that you use?
July 24, 2016
It works but only to a certain degree.
Going to be straight to the point. It will clear you up about 60%. It will destroy your skin for the first couple months though. Use it at night only, and sparringly. DO NOT put it near your mouth or eyes because those areas will forsurely peel uncontrollably. Use coconut oil as a moisturizer, and tea tree oil (dilute with water) as a toner. Those two things will help A LOT!! If you have some cash, go out and buy the ZAP kit by Saje. You will only need to use this cream once to twice a week then. Also, the moisturizer by Holista called Tea Tree and Vitamin E oil will save your skin from break outs and dryness. Use it at bedtime, after your night care routine, or after you use the retinoid cream.

A lifesaver!!!!!
The best thing I ever did was go to the Dr and get prescribed tretinoin!! Don't spend money on bogus cleansers and acne treatments that don't work, go straight to your Dr or dermatologist and get help!! This stuff has almost completely cleared me up, I'm 24 years old and had hundreds of blackheads and closed comedones and as a result was constantly getting inflamed pimples. I was put on tretinoin 0.05% (Stieva-A brand, not retin-a) and within 3 months I could see a huge improvement. The only thing is that my purging stage on this treatment was terrible, I broke out so badly. I did also peel quite a bit but with a good moisturiser it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. In the end I would do it all again if I had to. I've been using it for 4 months now and am about to go up a dose to the 0.1% just because I can. Get this stuff asap, you won't regret it!!

Im currently going throught the purging period... or at least i think I am. It's been close to 2 months. I was wondering how your purge period was since your skin seems pretty similar to mine
June 30, 2016
how long did it take for the marks from the purging to go away? :( I'm at 2.5 months and i have marks from my purging period
July 23, 2016
To ease the purging period, use coconut oil as a cleanser and tea tree oil as a toner. These are both antibacterial and help counteract the effects of the "purge". Also, vitamin E oil is great for those nasty dry spots you can get around the mouth/nose area.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
