Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit to only some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can sometimes reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

*cleared my acne for 2 years

Cons:

*made my skin dry
*upset stomach (my own fault)

I have been suffering from acne for 4 years. Around 3 years ago my acne got so bad (inflamed) that I went to the dermatologist and she prescribed me with Tetracycline. I took it for about 2 months and then i stopped because my acne cleared and i was having upset stomach (partly because I didnt take the protective pills which u r supposed to take when on antibiotic) I was very happy with the results. I would get the occasional spot here and there but my face and back were mainly clear. Only this summer I got something like cysts on my cheeks. They were just bumps under my skin which did not particularly hurt or anything. About a month ago my inflamed acne came back. I am 18 years old and I really hoped that by this age my acne would rather end then start again. I do recommend this antibiotic because it kept me clear for about 2 years. I might start it again.

Pros:

Completely cleared my cystic acne
Works fast
Helps with inflammation
Very little side effects for me!

Cons:

Dried face out
Have to plan meals around the pill
Occasionally gave me a stomach ache

I love this stuff! It completely cleared my horrible cystic acne in about a month. I tried everything from Proactiv, cutting dairy out of my diet, urine facials (yes, I was that desperate!) Tetracycline was my miracle solution. I rarely experienced side effects while taking Tetracycline. Once in awhile I'd get a stomach ache, but it would only last for half an hour, if that. The only down side to this medication is that you have to take it on an empty stomach. Being a teenage boy, this is extremely difficult for me, but it's so worth it! I would definitely recommend Tetracycline to any acne sufferer! It feels awesome to wake up in the morning and not have to worry if I broke out. :)

Pros:

It work very well for about 8 months. My doc told me to try to stop taking them (probably b/c of the immunity everyone has mentioned). So i was on them for 2 months and my skin was great all summer until now. Just refilled

Cons:

Meh...didn't really think i had any side effects. The whole immunity and acne coming back was a bummer.

Ask your doc for a "patient savings card" and your prescription will be no more than $25. Worked really well for me while it lasted. Hopefully i can achieve the same results.

Pros:

May help the symptom initially. WalMart has this drug available for $4-$8 WITHOUT insurance!!!

Cons:

Does NOT get to the root cause of the problem. The skin is the largest detox organ of the body. When acne appears, the body is fighting off SOMETHING.

I have avoided use of prescription drugs for 11 years now. I HATE drugs......BUT BUT BUT......................... I have tried EVERY NATURAL remedy available for 3 years now. I eat organically grown food, detox my body regularly, exercise, and everything else that goes along with living a healthy lifestyle. I used tetracycline and a topical 11 years ago at age 18. It "worked" however at age 28 my acne came back worse than ever. I just went to the doctor (grudgingly) and started taking it again. It seems to be helping so far. CONSIDER THAT ALL DRUGS HAVE A NON-Desirable effect on the body. I TAKE A PROBIOTIC because antibiotics destroy gut flora. I would recommend using Antibiotics for acne as a LAST RESORT.

Watch your reaction to this! Take the side affects seriously
( this might pop up twice- had a problem posting) So at 38 I am fed up with the cystic acne. Have tried various BC pills and topical medication. YAZ is the only BC that will even start to touch the large cystic acne I get on my neck, chin and behind the ears. So I was given minocycline to start. I started feeling dizzy and inebriated. It was like I was drinking continuously the entire day. I was slurrying words and having to concentrate on just walking. I have 3 kids/ won't do. The second day I contacted my primary care and the nurse advised I stop the drugs and come in. The doctor said she she didn't NOT believe I was having symptoms but she said she wanted me to try the drug again. That just because my body wasn't used to it didn't mean I was allergic. She sent me home with doxycycline as well in case I couldn't handle the first after trying it again for a few days. After 2 days I was again unable to function. At this point I was doubting myself about my side affects and feeling terrible about the cystic acne that is destroying my skin. So I switched to the doxycycline. Right away I stopped feeling dizzy and thought "this just might work". Last night ( the 2nd night taking doxycycline) I went to bed early feeling worn out ( I am a runner and running a marathon next weekend so I thought maybe it was my training). I woke at 12:39 with a large welt the side of a silver dollar on my side. Showed hubby and we took a picture- went back to bed. Woke up at 4:30 because I felt terrible- was covered with welts all over my body the side of my had and raised a quarter to half and inch. My cheeks, lips and right eye were swollen and my throat was tight and didn't feel right. Went to the ER - attending told me that I am severely allergic to ALL tetracyclines. I was give three types of medication, an epi pen and an inhaler. I was told to go back to primary care and get allergy testing now as well. I am frustrated with my primary care doctor for disregarding my symptoms ( she said maybe I have vertigo- have never had that before). Frustrated with the adult acne and now this. Please be careful when you take these medications and watch for appropriate reactions. Sometimes I feel they are vague in listing the side affects. How much is acceptable before your body goes over? In my case the doctor said it was the swelling face and throat... I selected yes for recommending this treatment bc I know it works well for some people/ I just want everyone to be aware that side affects can be serious

Pros:

Worked wonders the first 4 weeks of use

Cons:

Acne got really bad while i was on the them, and later I broke out into hives, and ever since have developed cystic acne.

Tetracycline was probably the worst thing I ever did to myself. It has honestly ruined my life. I had two small pimples when I first started taking them, and now it is a complete 180 degree turn. It worked really well the first four weeks, and later I started breaking out on my forehead and nose - two places I have never broken out! I later broke out into hives, and ever since I have been breaking out nonstop!! The past three months have been horrific. My entire face is covered with blemishes, and now I get large, painful pimples that don't respond to anything. I have not seen my face in this condition since I was a teenager. My face is really dry as well. Please be cautious when taking this medication and think it through if you really want it. I wish I never made that trip to the dermatologist. My life has turned upside down. Do not take it, please!!

Pros:

When initially taken it did clear my acne for a good 6 months.
Didn't have an initial breakout.
Only had to take once a day.
Inexpensive

Cons:

Large, hard to swallow plastic tablets.
Would repeat on me for about 2 hours after taking them.
Occasionally felt naseous.
Built up an immunity to it.

I would say Tetracycline is often one of the first antibiotics your given if you have bad skin. I used it for about a year and spent about 6 months clear but started to notice it wasn't working as well as it did before after a while. I had no remission of my acne afterwards, once I stopped the antibiotic, the acne came back. I didn't really like the tablets as they repeated on me with some strange taste and sometimes made me feel sick but I stuck with it whilst they were working. I was never told not to have dairy whilst on it but I always timed my dairy intake as far from the tablet as possible because it would make my stomach gurgle etc. Basically its a good first antibiotic but son't be surprised if you build up a resistance to it and need something stronger.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
