Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit to only some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can sometimes reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

does work on the short term, does not eliminate acne completely but does reduce larger pimples.

Cons:

if taken over a long period you may become resistant. When stopped acne returns.

there is only three treatments for acne, anitiboitics, diane 35 and roaccutane. so what options are there?? I have been on tetracycline for 6 months now it only started to work about a month ago. I know from taking antibiotics previousely my acne became resistant to it and it came back worse, i then went onto diane at 17 and it cleared my skin really well until now the age of 25 it returned but its more a mild case this time, still i feel im way to old to have this crap... so im taking them again and they have helped just really scared of what the future holds. im terrified of roaccutane and hoping that it doesn't come down to that. so my advice is take the stuff at least it grants you happiness for some time

Pros:

Gets rid of acne completely

Cons:

You have to keep using it, once you stop they come back. I have been on them for years. Everytime I think I should stop using them I break out all over again!!!

It works great, it is a cheap product, but it doesnt feel safe to keep using antibiotics for years. After trying to stop and breaking out again I think that sometimes I will be using this for the rest of my life.

Pros:

umm is there any? Maybe it helped me be more responsible to a tough schedule.

Cons:

worst than before! Made skin even more sensitive than before. Its not for everyone for sure! Im happy for those that are pleased.

Like some here, my skin did not like it at all. My resistant areas got even worst and the areas of my forhead that used to stay more clear, developed major break-outs. Plus, the areas that were bad were red rash-like and super sensitive. I'm going to hide now before my computer writes itself a program to make fun of me! p.s. from reading here, it seems that most results happen within the first couple weeks of taking it. I have been on for 2 months. Im staying on the path to find success!

Not worth it. I had a lot of confidence in this only to be pretty disappointed.

Pros:

Was on this with just benzoyl peroxide for several years. Helped and was affordable. Have since switched to solodyne and spironolactone with topical glymed wash and Benzaclin. NOW FINALLY HAVE THE SKIN I ALWAYS WANTED.

Cons:

Didn't prevent major breakouts.

Recommend use in conjunction with a total regimen if you're using. But know there are better (though more expensive) alternatives out there.

-the aftermath after off tetracycline

I used it before along time ago and i gave it a try for 6 months then i been off of it for awhile then i recently started breaking out badly these past 3 months and i started back on it for 2 more months again. It seems to make my face less oily now and my break outs are calming down but doctor said its a 6 month time period to see results...bottom line i dont know what to do this acne is making me depressed theres no new answers out there for acne..just old antbiotics that dont seem to work fast enough

Pros:

May be effective for others, but not for me.

Cons:

I have had acne since my early teenage years and still have it in my mid 20's. I've taken several courses of different tetracyclines for upto 6 months to a year and has never given me lasting results or any significant results even when on it.

Didn't work for me. Could possibly develop a resistance due to it being an antibiotic.

Pros:

Works well to start with.

Cons:

Loses effectiveness over time.
Possible other side effects?

This worked extremely well for 3-4 months, but then the spots started to come back. It is not as bad as it was, but still nowhere near to clear. Also, my vision has been more blurry and I have experienced headaches since I started takin it. I am not sure if this is due to the drug or not, but I have heard that these are possible side effects.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
