Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

skin quality improved

Cons:

my skin is worse than before

I was sick of my acne so I went to the derm. I experienced the initial breakout after 2 weeks and then my acne started getting better by weeks three and four. However, that was the last good thing I can say about tazorac. By weeks 6 and 7 my acne looked worse than ever before. I also have acne now in places I never got it before. I am now on week 8 and it is slowly starting to clear up again. My derm gave me some doryx now so hopefully that will help. All im saying is think twice before using this stuff.

Pros:

For most people it will clear up any acne, photodamage, wrinkles, and psforiasis. You should see a significant difference in your skin. (You must stick with it for atleast three months unless severe side effects occur, consult your dermatologist)

Cons:

Redness, flaking, peeling, dry lips and itchy skin, increase in sensitivity to the sun and while washing your face. You will most likely have an initinal breakout that is severe. The price can be expensive depending on your insurance or health care.

I'm specifically talking about the 30mg Tazorac cream with 0.01% Tazarotene, too be used every other night. You must gently exfoliate your skin atleast two nights of the week to remove the peeling skin, moisturizer should be used after you cleanse your face and before you apply the Taz, and you must use a very thin layer of the Taz. Using a generous amount will only give you worse side effects. Taz will cause a sever breakout in the first month (approx.) of using it. I recommend you visit your dermatologist after a month of use to check that the Taz is having the desired effect. You must always apply Taz according to your doctor's orders (every other night in my case), if you miss a dose return to your schedule and do not apply two doses to make up for the missed one. Any severe side effect should be consulted with a dermatologist immediately. Taz shouldn't be used with other topical medicine and face should not be cleansed with soap or alcohol based products. Good luck.

Pros:

It is far too soon and it hasn't began to work, but I am optimistic. Right now I am using the samples that the dermatologist gave me so it is free.

Cons:

My skin feels itchy and sensitive. Little red blotches and bumps have appeared.

I will write another rating in a couple of weeks. Currently, I am seeing bumps on one side of my face where there usually are none, but it is early. I have used differin and it probably was a lot less irritating in my opinion. I never got a severe initial breakout with that so I am crossing my fingers.

Pros:

Worked very well, cleared up completley except for scars

Cons:

broke out a little more in the beginning
took a few weeks to notice a difference
stopped working after about a year, as of last night i started taking tazorac cream and monodox pills

Good product stick with it may get worse before it gets better and make sure you still mousterize because skin becomes very dry. I now use eucerin aquaphor it works amazzzzingly and wont cause u to be oily and breakout. When it does stop working, get something new ********* i prolly brokeout on my forehead because i got bangs, sooooo bottem line....dont get bangs if you suffer from acne. yeah i should have thought of that before

Pros:

smooth skin

Cons:

still breaking out , peeling

I've now been on it 7weeks & the initial breakout seems to be lots better, but it's that time of the month & I've got lots of little cysts @ jawline. I'm using aczone twice a day & taz at night along with doryx once a day: I hate taking so many things, but the derm doesn't beieve in using just one method. Did it take you guys beyond 12 weeks to get rid of thecystic ones?? I'm so TIRED of dealing with this!!

Pros:

It seemed to work for a while...

Cons:

but once I stopped using it my skin got even worse than I had before.

I started using it when my dermatologist recommended it to me for my mid break out skin. Started with 0.05 cream (gel didn't agree with me :(, moved on to 0.1 and it was working OK for 6 months. The problem was that I have to pay full $150 (my insurance didn't cover) so I stopped using it for a while and my face is just HORRIBLE know. Its like it just got off the drugs that really made me think about becoming dependent on it. I'm trying other meds now but probably will come back to Tazorac...can't stand my face now:(

Pros:

Made my skin feel smooth, is clearing my skin

Cons:

worse before better, dry, peeling, itchy skin - blemishes didn't get worse though, it would cost me 500 a month if I didn't have insurance

use a moisterizer before you put it on - or right after...ease into it..Right now I am on minocylene 100mcgs twice a day...in the am I do RetinA micro on face..and then organic virgin COCONUT OIL...all over my body..first time in 2 years I can moisterize my upper body without breaking out..and then I put tazorac on my arms and back (and certain face spots)..at night I do the same thing with the coconut oil and tazorac...the oil prevents the drying and my skin looks great after only 2 days! The tazorac works..the coconut oil combats the side effects(drynes).my skin looks great..I have hope after 2 years of this..(also just diagnosed with hypothyroidism..which I think is what is causing my skin problems) I'm also going to eat 3 tablespoons a day of the oil. I say tazorac and coconut oil is where its at..oh and I will pile on bacitracin too..it works really well helping with dryness...and the coconut oil is drying out a raised acne scar on my shoulder..its almost gone..in only two days

Pros:

Makes my skin smooth. Less zits.

Cons:

Expensive, the first 12 weeks are a bitc*. I mean real bad. You have to stick with it, I am glad I did.

This is an update, I think it had finally starting working. I no longer get zits-my skin is near perfect and clear. It was a rough 12 weeks though. It made my skin look worse then it ever has when I started using it, but now it has never looked better. I also use finacea cream and take Bactrim antibiotics. I really think though that the combo of the taz at night, and finacea during the day is what did it. I highly recommend doing this combo. I bought finacea online for 25 bucks a tube. My doctor recommended it but I could not afford it as it is $$$-my doctor also gives me a box of taz samples at a time since the taz is very $$$ and I can't afford that either. AM: Washing face with cetaphil. Use Neutrogena sensitive skin facial lotion. Appy finacea Cream. PM: Wash face Lotion then the taz good luck everyone!!!!

Pros:

Quick peeling off of skin, including newly formed and older pimples. Skin revealed underneath is super soft and touchable. Less irritating than BP and no bleaching action. I have ruined so many clothes from the bleaching effect of BP!

Cons:

Crazy drying and peeling. I need to use A LOT of oil free moisturizer with it, which makes me break out since my skin is so sensitive to moisturizing agents.

I'm going to keep using it along with 10% BP that I was able to find in stores until I can order some 2.5% BP and start the regimen. I Haven't decided if I will continue to use it once I get some 2.5%.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
