Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

beautiful clear skin. Free of the tiny oil bumps covering my face. Gets rid of my monthly pimples within days. Has created a smooth complexion......no more bumpiness

Cons:

Can cause me surface dryness around my mouth, but my skin is still oily. But no wrinkles and I'm 34yrs.

Love it love it love it. I'm afraid to stop using it. I can't. Once I didn't use it for 3wks. and my skin reverted back to its old ways.

Pros:

makes pimples smaller

Cons:

doesn't prevent pimples from coming

It helps, but doesn't stop pimples from occurring. If you use it a lot, the affected area gets pretty red.

Pros:

it absolutley works

Cons:

takes 7-8 weeks with a major initial breakout that lasted aprox. 1-5 weeks.

was covered with tiny open and closed pimples, pistules, papules, all over my face. Have very sensitive fair skin. This is the only product that has worked. Mix pea size 5% lotion with pea size cetaphil lotion moisurizer in palm of hand apply at night and leave on overnight. clydigel morning. Duricef antibiotic and yasmin. derm says should be able to drop antibiotic and yasmin after 12 weeks.

Pros:

Acne is better.

Cons:

Red rash, skin peeling, burning sensation.

This is the second time I tried this cream, so allergies can develop suddenly. I was using for a week and my face and throat are so red and peeling and burning. I have a rash that is still here two days later. Use sparingly and test a spot if you are first using it. Do a spot test if you haven't used it in awhile too, because I didn't and now I am red and peeling even though I could use it before. I think the reason my acne is better is because of all the layers of skin loss.

Pros:

It is supposed to work and make your skin clear

Cons:

Dry, flakey skin.

I started using tazorac, but I am doing exactly what my dermo told me to which is to only do it twice my first week. So i have only done it once and my skin is dry and flakey, but it will work. I am not going to give up just because my skin is peeling, it's supposed to do that. Just make sure you moisturize before putting it on.

Pros:

OMG! I have only been using Tazorac cream for 4 days and I can see improvement! I also use Duac cream every morning and taz every other night.I am so thankful that God gave me such a great Derm.

Cons:

remaining paitient.

Yes my skin is a little dry,it's peeling, and it hurts when i put cream on it, but thats a part of the heeling process. This medication will work , you just have to be paitent, stay postive, and keep your faith high. The Duac and Taz combo is great. I only use taz every other night on my face becuase it's strong, and I use Duac every morning, I only use a pea size. I also only put Taz on my acne not all over my face! It will irritate unaffected areas! it says so in the package. And Duac all over my face. I also use Cetaphil with SPF 15, it great for the face. Please give it time and stop looking i nthe mirrior every 5 min!! It will work have faith and be strong. Also try to get the cream version not the gel.And most importantly ask God to cure you, trust me it works.

Pros:

nothing after two weeks

Cons:

Severe peeling of my face, burning, redness, increase breakouts, very itchy.

I just started using Taz. It has only been two weeks,I have not noticed anything yet. However I am sticking with it since everyone says that it gets worse before it gets better. My derm never told me that I have to use moisturizer one hour prior to applying taz,and I have found that I have to moisturize through out the day since my skin is soo dry and peeling/itchy. I have moderate blackheads on chin and forhead. Has anyone had good luck with this, any suggetions?

Pros:

Been using 1 month plus 3 days. It costs 35 for me with insurance, Am about 1 third through the Tube so roughly will last 3-4 Months per tube which isn't bad. Longer if your acne isn't severe. Skin beginning to lighten, No cysts since I've started.

Cons:

Made me break out around my face in small pustules, but wasn't as bad. There will be an initial Breakout.

I am using .1% nightly. When I started I would use Olay Complete for Sensitive skin moisturizer. When you first start it is key to use a good moisturizer. First wash your face. Let dry then moisturize Then 30 Mins later put on Tazorac, light layer all around your face. I am also on Minocycline once a day, and Benzaclin in the mornings. I put on moisturizer after benzaclin also. I think the benzaclin and the minocycline may have aided in less of initial breakout although I still experienced some. I think in 2 months from now I will no longer need the Mino or the benza. So I finally stopped being scared of Taz and started it. It is one month later, the initial breakout is finally starting to subside and skin is slowly improving. Emphasis on Slowly. My scars seem a little better, although I think it will take 6 months to really improve. This is a LONG term thing. If your acne is really bad I recommend using Benzaclin in Mornings, get a good moisturizer and antibiotic.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
