Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Product used: KAVI (Coral KAVI)

Pros:

For users of all now-defunct sulfur soaps (Fostex, Sastid, etc), this is the better of them all. Smells less, works better, and has the same benefits (no shine after washing, feels clean, and, most importantly, no breakouts).

Cons:

none, just please keep making this product!

if you need a sulfur soap, you've found it here.

Pros:

This product can be used as a spot treatment or mask. I use it in the area with most acne, and leave on at night. In the morning, the acne is not as red and greatly reduced in size.

Cons:

It is expensive. It can make the small bumps go away, but it takes longer with larger pimples.

Good product, worth buying. It will reduce size of pimples and you will notice the area has less acne.

Pros:

Somewhat dried out your pimple, bringing all the white stuff in your pimple to the top so it was easy to pop.

Cons:

You might need to use it more than once in a row to actually make it dissapear.

Somewhat worked for me, could work for you

Pros:

I don't really mind the smell as much as other people i guess and i really like the face wash and moistureizer.

Cons:

Making me break out more and not really doing much of anything else for my skin so far.

I've been using these products for alomost 2 weeks now and before I started using it I had severe acne all over my cheeks and some on my chin, but not so much on my forehead and my face was red all over. After a little less than a week my face started getting worse now I have a ton of little pimples all over my jawline. They hurt really bad and they are making my jawline really red. It actually hurts just to touch my face so you can imagine what it is like to wash it. I read the little booklets and went on the website and it says it is the purging process, and that it is completly normal and it will go away soon, but I also read reviews on the internet about people who have used it for 6 weeks or longer and the bad acne that acne complex has caused still never went away. hopefully this is just purging and it will go away but with the luck i've had with acne products it doesn't seem likly. I guess you should give it a try and see if it works for you, everyone is different.

Pros:

Packaging is attractive and the package inserts make you think that the product is actually going to work. Cleanser tingles like it is actually cleaning out your skin.

Cons:

Made me brak out worse over a couple of months, not just the first week like the insert said. Burned my skin. Caused red patched and acne scars, which I never had before.

Do not waste your money or use this product. This product caused me more acne and it left me with red areas with indented scars. I never had acne that bad before, but now after using this product I have moderate acne. I also don't know what to do with my scars. After using this product for a couple of months my skin looks older. DON'T USE!

Pros:

-reducing in redness through out usage
-cleans up acne scars
-purging process releases all feature brake outs ahead of time

Cons:

-purging process is hard to deal with because Murad Acne Complex worsens acne before clears it
-with the standard Murad Acne Complex I saw no results, but I am using the sensitive kit, and seeing faster results
-All Murad acne products contains

I started with the standard Murad Acne Complex kit, and saw no results what so ever. However with the sensitive Acne Complex Kit (different product from Murad) I am seeing more results. I am on week 2/3 and I one more week (4th week) before it completely clears my acne. I don't care for the PureSkin supplements or the bodyspray and body wash, acne on the body is allot easier to get of than facial acne. I am now done with the purging process. Now its clearing. The standard Acne Complex Kit burned my face and completely ruined it. But ever since switching kits, my skin has made a positive response to it. So its a matter of days of clearing the acne. I am looking forward to more week, then I'm clear! Yay. I would recommend this product, but please use it with patience- nothing works over nigh unless its a mask. But if its a regimen, please wait. Acne is one of those things... But not for log for me! After clearing the acne, I will use Murad's Acne Scar Kits

Pros:

Very affordable and works very well at clearing up acne

Cons:

Difficult to locate in stores, had to order online

I have suffered with acne for many years and used the multitude of products (over-the-counter and prescription). Pregnancy made my acne flare up again far worse than normal. I couldn't use the regular products because they weren't deemed safe during pregnancy. After some research, I discovered a sulfur product was my best bet - and I'm so happy I tried Grandpa's Thylox Soap. With consistent use twice daily my acne has cleared up so much - and just continues to improve. The soap isn't harsh at all and yet it works great to exfoliate the surface layer of dead skin cells and unclog your pores. I highly recommend this product to anyone facing acne problems.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
