Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

comes with a pore-cleansing mask
effective sulfur spot treatment
less acne breakouts over the long term

Cons:

purging period
the spot treatment is ITCHY
mediocre moisturizer
acne treatment made my face look oily

First of all, the "clear skin in 4 weeks" guarantee is false. Depending on the depth and severity of your acne, it will probably take longer. Second of all, the bad reviews are based on the purging period during which acne-causing bacteria is resurfaced (in the form of acne, or course). This is essential to clear skin!!! I've been trying this product for a month, and have endured discouragement from my family because my acne was getting worse. But towards the end of the month, my skin greatly improved! I went from having severe acne all over my forehead (this was before using Murad) to only about 3 pimples in the area and some tiny ones. My cheeks have undergone similar improvement. However, it'll probably take another month or so for my acne to disappear completely, so I repurchased it. I would highly recommend using this product only if you have the patience and perseverance to stick with it. Murad will be the last acne product I will ever have to use!!

Pros:

Works fast
Shrinks even the deep cystic pimples
Leaves face feeling smooth
Inexpensive
Clears black heads that my normal soap leaves behind

Cons:

Smells like sulfur but it's really not that bad

If you want an inexpensive product that you don't need a prescription for that works this is it. I use it 3 times a week at night with a witch hazel solution and a benzoyl peroxide cream. I had the deep cyst acne, the kind that is underneath the skin that never comes to a head, within two days of using this product the pimples had shrunk and were barely noticeable.

Pros:

Cleared my face
Doesnt take long

Cons:

Took longer then it says
Cant stop using it

It really did clear my skin ! But it took me more like a month to work not 3 weeks like it says & I cant stop using it. When I font use Murad for more than 2 days my acne starts popping up again. Maybe its just me but I woukd recomend this if you have the money to spend.

Pros:

1 or 2 days of clear skin

Cons:

Cystic Acne
Scarring
Burning & Itching
Extreme redness

For the love of god DO NOT purchase this product. Originally I had been using a cheap OXY product from the grocery store when a family member recommended Murad. Worst decision I have ever made in my life. Using the Oxy Clinical Treatment for 9 bucks worked a million times better. I know have cystic acne ALL over the sides of my nose, cheeks, lip, chin, and I'm even getting acne on the bottom of my jaw. Don't waste your time on this. I don't want anyone to go through what I am going through, so save your money and buy anything else BUT Murad.

Pros:

Very refreshing

Cons:

Made my face raw and red

I really liked the cleanser because it left my face super refresed BUT it was too strong to take off my eye makeup which I didn't like. The moisturizer was nice but the acne gel or something this package made my sensative skin raw and red, so I had to return it.

Pros:

-shrinks down even the largest of pimples!!
-makes skin smooth!
-a little goes a long way!

Cons:

-i only use it as a spot treatment and leave it on over night, because if i put it all over my face it sort of dries it out!
-smells strange, but i'll deal with it!
-little blue beads in it are sometimes hard to rub in completely so the mask will start working, it just takes some time it get it perfect but i still love this!

overall, i really do love this product!! i used to own proactiv when i was younger and overall hated it, but the one thing that i really loved about that system was the free sulfer mask they gave to you as an overnight spot treatment, because it actually worked! but since i stopped purching the system, i eventually ran out of the sulfer mask! so i was at my local pharmacy one day and spotted this on the shelf, and decided to give it a try. i originally put it on after i got out of the shower as an entire face mask and left it on for about thirty minutes (required amount is only about 10-15 minutes, but you could go longer!) and when i washed it off, the two or three zits i had from my menstration cycle reduced dramatically and it made my skin really soft and it just made it feel really fresh and clean! i was truely impressed! now i typically just use it as an over night spot treatment and wash it off in the morning, and i'm good! oh, and i've had this for several months (5-6) and i'm still on my first bottle due to only using it as a spot treatment! so give it a try, it works wonders! :-)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
