Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

drys skin
smells good
gets rid of most acne(I think?)

Cons:

beads are annoying
must use for more than a couple weeks
need to use along with over counter medicine

I am also using epiduo(benzoyl peroxide) so I dont know if its helping everything. But, I've been using it for over a month and works pretty well. I have to use it in large amounts and about 3 times a day though.

Cons:

literally the worst cleanser I have ever used. I have a rash all over my chin and cheeks and it burns. I would not recommend this to anyone, it's horrible.

Pros:

NONE!!!

Cons:

Bad allergic reaction

I just used one drop on my chin for one blemish. Within two days my face was so swollen and red that my family did not reconize a text pic of me. The first reaction was my chin was very itchy and under my eyes were swollen. My neck was also red and very dried out. The next day it was so red, swollen and itchy that my face looked deformed. I had to go to the doctors for a shot of Benadryl and a streiod shot followed by 7 days of steriods. My face peeled as if I had a chemical peel. It took 5 days for my face to get back to a normal color, size and texture. It was a horrible and tramatic thing to go through. It cost about $8 for the product and $125 to fix the results from the reaction. I wish I had reviewed it before I used it. Use with caution and treat symtoms as soon as you notice them...they only get worse!!! I gave this a one rating only because it would not accept a zero rating.

Pros:

Makes my skin feel so soft. And cleared my acne in an hour. And my blackheads were gone in about 2 minutes afteri used it. I used to waste money on other products but i found the perfect one now.

Cons:

Nothing this thing is amazing

Buy it because it's the best you'll ever buy. If you have acne and you don't like it this is the thing for you! i'm not even kidding. you can even ask my mom if you don't beleive me. She will tell you.

Pros:

Decent smell, cheap alternative ( I bought the walgreens brand - exact same! ) All you do is pay for the name! haha

Cons:

Beads do nothing, irritated my skin bad, red for days! pretty big bottle so if it does not work for you, it can be a waste.

I did not have any blackheads to startout with, but still wanted to try Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub because of the 2% salicylic acid. However, my skin does not agree with salicylic acid and made me breakout bad. As in 3x worse. So it may work for some, just not me. I used it for a few weeks and it just plain out irritated my skin. Started out twice a day, then down to once but did not make a different. This product does NOT work with my skin type, so now I know and can buy more crap and they that hoping they work.

Pros:

the smell, the feel, the little beads, i love this stuff.

Cons:

it dries out my skin in the cold weather and if i use it more than once a day

this is a great face wash. it does dry me out in the winter a bit but i have combo skin, so most stuff does. i use this at the sink and the st. ives medicated face scrub in the shower... basicly the same stuff only a bit scrubbier ;). i love every one of this companies products that i have tried.

Pros:

I bought this product after using proactive which only made my skin rough and dry and i have only used it for a week and at the moment my skin is doing better my forehead has been getting pimples underneath the skin and the spottreatment helps alot!!

Cons:

stings for a second but you get used to it very fast and it has a bit of an alchohol smell but not entirely bad

love it, its affordale, the cleanser works well if you squirt some onto the pad of the wave vibrating face washer and it really does stop new acne from forming and makes my skin very smooth and my skin is very very very sensitive so you can count on it that this stuff works

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
