Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Cons:

Pros:

Helped for only about a month, then acne came back.

Cons:

Dried out my skin like crazy! Especially near lips.

Sort of reccommended if you're just trying around. Make sure you use a mositurizer after

Pros:

It's a relatively inexpensive BHA product, which is hard to find. Although it does have fragrance, it is very mild.

Cons:

It's PH is nowhere near low enough to allow the Salicylic acid to be effective as an exfoliant. I tested it with my PH sticks, and it turned out to be between 6 and 7. The PH needs to be between 2.5 and 4, I believe, in order to exfoliate.

I added about 15 ml. of some 70% lactic acid solution that I had at home to this product to lower the PH (I tested it, and it is now at about a 2.5-3 PH). Now it will be a two in one, AHA, BHA product, and it will have a PH that will be effective at exfolating. We'll see how it works! I wish that they had made sure the PH was effective to begin with, and that they had not included fragrance. I gave it a rating of 1 for effectiveness because of the PH level, not from experience.

Pros:

None

Cons:

The product discolored my skin. My face color changed completely, to a lighter color, with the edges remaining my natural color. It is completely noticeable!!! I have to go see a dermatologist now.

It was not a good product for me. For some, it might work fine.

Pros:

This product made me "feel" like I was secure from awful zits....and it smelled nice.

Cons:

It LITERALLY made my pimple redder, bigger and grosser.
I could feel it burning, which is NOT a good feeling.
It created an acne scar rather than treating/preventing it.

This thing was quite decieving and I'm almost convinced it's made to sabotage the skin of hopeless teens who will do anything for relief from blemished skin.

Pros:

Effective and non drying. Nice smell.

Cons:

None so far.

I am going to say from the start that I do not have acne, so I do not know if this product works well on severe cases. I do have clogged pores (blackheads on my nose especially). I have been using this product other products and my skin is close to flawless. In the morning I use natural baby wipes to cleanse my skin and follow with the Neutrogena Stress Control Acne Lotion. In the evening I oil cleanse my face with a castor and grapeseed oil combo. I follow that with a natural tea tree oil foaming face wash. Next I apply Alpha Hydrox oil-free formula and wait for that to dry, I then follow with the Neutrogena hydrating cream. So far this has worked well to unclog pores and avoid random breakouts.

Pros:

45 day return policy

Cons:

Burns the skin! I only used it 3 times. If you want to return you have to pay, so for $14 you could have bought something that actually worked.

You could use either proactive or this to get that burning skin feeling. I'd rather wash a whole lot more with my usual soap, or even just deal with the pimples than have my sking burn all the time. I would not recommend this product.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
