Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

it works, but not right away. takes more than just a day or two to notice a difference.

Cons:

the commercials lied, its not an over night kind of thing.

don't expect it to work RIGHT AWAY... i've been putting it on for the past 2 days. and for some reason, still there, a bit bigger& redder. makes no sence.

Pros:

It did make my skin feel clean, removed make-up.

Cons:

I never felt like it worked, my face never really cleared up.

I mostly used this product for about a year, and honestly I felt like it was a waste of time. My skin never really improved or cleared up at all while using it. In fact, over the past year my acne has gotten worse, with my cysts getting bigger. Now that's not entirely Neutrogena's fault, but it should have alleviated some of the smaller zits, which it didn't.

Pros:

I really like this product. It makes my face feel smooth and clean.

Cons:

No one seems to carry it anymore. Does anyone know where i can find it?

I totally recommend this product. It works so well, that my sister-in-law uses it and now i am almost out and can't find it anywhere.

Pros:

- It Smells Nice
- Has a cooling effect when u first use it
- Smooths on well

Cons:

After using it for about a week, the cooling sensation goes away. I dunno if it exfoliates?

Its a good moisturizer... but not the best.

Pros:

Reduces acne very quickly (in a matter of days).

Cons:

It doesn't completely get rid of my acne - I still get breakouts often, but they are usually small and not so noticeable. Also, this product really dries out my skin if I don't moisturize.

I have fairly sensitive skin and have had no luck with products containing Benzoyl Peroxide. I've tried a lot of over-the-counter cleansers, but this is the only thing that really makes a dent in my acne. I'm still looking to find a more effective product, but all in all I don't have many complaints. Also, some have complained about the smell, but it doesn't bother me a bit.

Pros:

The spot treatment works really well for me. When I use Dan's regimen with this spot treatment I rarely get new zits. However, when I see one starting to form I use this spot treatment and it will clear up the zit in 2-3 days or less.

Cons:

Don't use all of the products in this line because it will over-irritate you.

When used as a spot treatment it is useful and efficient at clearing zits.

Pros:

Burt's Bees Body Wash finally cleared up my back. Tetracycline, 3 rounds of Accutane, various soaps, this finally cleared up my back and chest.

Cons:

None that I can think of.

It is still a good body wash even if it does not help your acne, if you don't have a reaction.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
