Pros:

Clears up persistent body acne within about a month.

Cons:

Antibiotic resistance can develop with on/off use; predisposes your skin to phototoxic rash from sunlight exposure.

Minocycline is a bacterioSTATIC drug; it does not kill the bacteria responsible for acne, it only keeps the populations at bay. Once you go off this drug, your skin will get worse again. Use BP in conjunction with Minocycline to kill the bacteria as well. The effectiveness of mino has all but diminished for me, so I don't take it anymore.

Pros:

effective treatment for mild to moderate acne, almost completely eliminates outbreaks after 2 weeks

Cons:

time interval between taking the pills and eating/drinking any type of dairy product, same thing for vitamins

Most people who are on this medication will have the initial breakout withing the first few weeks. Luckily for me, I only broke out the day after I started the treatment with symmetrical pimples, three on each side of my mouth, which were alleviated quickly thereafter. If you've tried most over-the-counter acne treatments, then this would be a great starting point for anyone who has been suffering for acne. I've had acne since I was 14, and am now 20, so I have extensively tried mostly everything out there on the market, and my only conclusion to make is that prescription drugs and topicals will probably infiltrate acne and hopefully keep it under control since acne is most likely non-curable.

Pros:

It really hasn't worked for me yet in 21 days have been on Minocycline for 21 days and my skin worsened w/ a bad breakout 7 days after starting. Now, I am waiting for my acne to disappear.

Cons:

I get upset an upset stomach if I drink milk accidentally w/out a 2 hour nterval

I am giving it a try. If I get no results at the end of my 2 month period, I will ask my dermatologist for Accutane. I read Vilante has less side effects.I do modeling and need quick results.

Pros:

My skin seems to be slowly clearing up.

Cons:

I get super dizzy, and light headed. I feel like I am in a fog.

I'm not sure about this at all, I think i might go off it. I think having a healthy body and feeling well is more important than a my acne. Perhaps a hormone level check with my doctor is what is need.

Pros:

Seemed to slightly relieve the amount of breakouts.

Cons:

Does not reduce oil, acne seems about the same

I have been on the generic form of minocycline as well as an alternative form solodyn. Both of these medication did not provide much help and the are very expensive. Body also adjusts to the drug.

Pros:

-clears up most acne within a month

Cons:

-body becomes used to the minocin, making it less effective
-skin becomes sensitive to light
-liver damage

dont do minocin, just bite the bullet and take accutane. My body got used to minocin after about a year, and then I'd have to stop taking it for a few weeks just so it'd be more effective. Obviously the best way to go about getting rid of acne is to let it happen naturally, but if your going to decide on taking an antibiotic then just take accutane...Once you stop taking minocin the acne just comes back (worse at times), once you stop taking accutane ur skin stays clear

Pros:

Since taking it, I have had no new breakouts.

Cons:

Side affects, dizziness. Remembering not to eat for 2-3 hrs after taking it.

After suffering with cystic acne since age 14, I desperately wanted clear skin (age 52). So far, I have not experience any major side affects. In my 20's the doctor prescribed Accutane, which was GREAT! No medication however is perfect. Acne just has to be lived with.

Pros:

Clears up your face for a couple of weeks and then its back to the same old ish. It would be clear for one week, then the next week I would have pimples and I was combining this with Differin.

Cons:

I never saw any changes and I was on it for about 4 months. I dont even think it did jack, because my face was still breaking out. I ran out of this medicine and was only using differin and my face cleared right up.

Its dissapointing but my doc put me on Doxycycline and Ive been on that for about a week. Acne is a real pain in the ass and I wish I never inherited the stupid disease. It makes me feel self-conscious and it makes me angry to think that anybody may be judging me. I hate acne and everything to do with it. I hope the kids that i have dont ever have to go through this.
March 10, 2007

Pros:

Definitely reduces the amount and size of my pimples.

Cons:

Must take with water and not with food within an hour. Sort of a pain in the butt to have to think about what times you took food or vitamins.

Before this, I was prescribed Tetracycline and that worked well, but not as well as this. This product really keeps my acne under control.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
