Pros:

NONE

Cons:

It made my skin much worse.

I had such high hopes for this medication as it was the first time I had gone to the dermatologist and been prescribed something. Before this I had always tried over the counter stuff. I was taking 100 mg dosage and it made my skin horrible. I went from having bad skin to the worst skin I have ever had. The pimples that formed were HUGE and I still have scars. I was on it for two months, hoping it would get better, but it only got worse, until finally I stopped the medication.

Pros:

I'm a 41 year old woman and I have been battling acne ever since I was a teen. This is the first med that has ever helped my acne. I only take 50 mg and that seems to do the trick.

Cons:

I sometimes get yeast infections from this med but I take a diflucan once a week.

I feel like I have my life back. I a'm no longer ashamed of my face. This stuff really works.

Cons:

THROAT HURT!

my throat hurt ssooo much when I was on this. I accidentally forgot them one time when I ended up sleeping over at a friends house so I missed my regular dosage...long story short, by mid-afternoon the next day my throat didn't hurt.

Pros:

it cleared my skin up completely when the correct dosage was prescribed.

Cons:

having to take it twice a day for a couple of months, although it is such a small inconvenience, it's barely worth mentioning.

I was first prescribed only 100mg a day, and I used it for 6 weeks...but my skin only got worse. My doctor concluded that I was not responsive so she took me off of it...a couple months later I saw a derm, who told me what of course I had known before, that it takes more than 6 weeks to see improvement. So, she put me back on, but at 200mg per day. My skin cleared up within weeks! Please, if you have tried this at 100mg and it hasnt worked, try 200mg. Minocycline is the first thing that has cleared my skin...ever

Pros:

None.

Cons:

CRANIAL PRESSURE!
I got THE worst migraines of my life for five straight days. My derm had me discontinue, and now I'm using topicals. And I'm clear!

Minocycline is good for the average person. If you are someone who is prone to side effects, or gets head aches a lot, this product is not for you. Contact your derm IMMEDIATELY if you get persistent or severe headaches.

Pros:

It was cheap!

Cons:

I guess I'm allergic to this stuff because after about two weeks of taking it as directed, I broke out really bad in hives. The itching was horrendous until I was prescribed some Allegra.

It was only $10 after my insurance picked up the rest. I couldn't take it long enough to notice if it was helping or not. I'd say not to take my review to heart but just be aware that you could be allergic too if you've never been exposed to this stuff. I was only Ziana gel at the same time as this stuff but due to where I was breaking out, the doctor and I agreed that Ziana was most likely not the culprit. Hopefully you have better luck than I did with this stuff.

Pros:

i get NO pimples while taking this medication. (okay, maybe one or two every six months or so.)

Cons:

none

i have what you might call "vanity acne", where i just get a few really bad pimples at a time. i was on a few different medications before i was prescribed minocycline. now, if i run out and don't fill my prescription right away, i'll get 3 zits within five days of not taking the medication. so it definitely works. i originally took two twice a day, but i've only been taking 100mg per day for a while now.

Pros:

For the most part it does the job

Cons:

Occasional flare ups, continual use

I've had severe acne issues since puberty, and at age 31 I finally saw a dermatologist. He prescribed minocycline, and it's been six years. The first few years he had me on 200mg a day (100 twice a day), with instructions to see if I could cut it down to 150mg a day. At 150mg a day I had frequest flare ups, while at 200mg my skin is normally clear, though I do have the occasionaly flare up about once every month or two on the 200mg dosage. The doctor finally concluded that lowering my dosage wasn't an option, so it's 200mg a day from here on. Compared to pre-treatment, minocycline has done the job for me. It's been six years since I started on it, but I don't remember having any side effects.

Pros:

None that I can think of

Cons:

Far too many

Let me preface this with saying I only took it for a week before I quit the medication, so I probably did not give it enough time to work. The reason I quit is the adverse reactions. Thanks to Minocycline, I now have an itchy rash on my neck that won't go away. I have a yeast infection. It made me so dizzy, I couldn't even stand up for long periods of time. I threw up each day I was on it. It did far more harm than good. I only have mild acne so putting up with theses symptoms for a few pimples here and there is absolutely not worth it. What a waste of $35 bucks ($10 for the prescription, $20 for Monistat for the yeast infection, and $5.00 for Benedryl for the rash. Not to mention the ginger ale and saltines I had to eat everyday because of the vomiting)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
