Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show they can reduce severe acne in the short term, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Within three days, acne started to lessen to be very manageable.
No side effects so far.
Noticeable changes.

Cons:

The precautions you take (no eating or dairy while taking medicine in a 4 hour range)

Within three days, my acne started to lessen, in addition to switching to my latest topical medicine drug (in order to keep my body from resisting them). I switched from Acne Free to Salicylic acid pads and started taking Minocycline. I take only on one a night, which is what I personally recommend you should, as it allows the drug to last longer, and be less dramatic on any side effects. Most Importantly, DO NOT ... I repeat... DO NOT take this drug for longer than 5-6 months. You're foolish if you do. Straight up Foolish. Others below me, have made this mistake as they we're too un "read the directions/listen to your doctor" when taking this. If you do you risk many more of the side effects, and even possibly worse acne. If you're acne comes back after taking this medicine's use, start on a new prescription. But do not repeat. And remember, You always want to use different topical drugs on your skin in order to prevent resistance, but remember, be gentle. V

Pros:

The imflammation went down, but probably due the steriod pack I was using for a week.

Cons:

Few headaches, loss of appetite

I assume it's working. I've been using it for one full week. I assume it cleared up my skin a little bit, but now experiencing breakouts again. It's still very early to determine if it's working. Im also using Produce facial cleanser, tazaroc cream at night and clydamicin gel in the morning. Never had severe acne but I hope this stuff works and works fast. I am using Solodyn 135mg once a day.

Pros:

Made my face clear up a little bit...but not much.

Cons:

I started taking it and broke out where I never had before. My chest, my back and my neck.

I am 21 and never had acne until I was about 18. I took this for two months. It took about that long for it to effect my face at all but ultimately it wasnt worth having acne everywhere else on my body for a very SLIGHT improvement. It only cost me 15 dollars with insurance so it was worth a shot, but I decided to stop taking it. There has to be something better out there for me.

Pros:

It has greatly reduced the breakouts.

Cons:

My lips turned dark, my histamines have increased so I am taking benedryl to counteract the itching and I feel loopy.

It is effective but the side effects for me are a drawback.

Pros:

Got the stuff free with coupon from dermatologist.

Cons:

Long term use of oral antibiotic lowers natural resistance to germs.

Not sure if this treatment is right for a 13yo girl. Week three on Solodyn and her acne does not seem to be clearing up. Will not keep her on this stuff much longer.

Pros:

I've been on and off several different antibiotics (including erythromycin, and topical clindamycin) and for me this one provides noticeably clearer skin in less time than the others without strong side effects.

Cons:

Never really completely cleared my skin... it tended to get it almost there in a few weeks, and then i would break out again just as it seemed as if i would be acne-free. Can produce some mild side-effects. Extremely expensive without insurance.

Definitely worth a shot, especially if other antibiotics have not been as effective as desired. You probably should avoid dairy and zinc while on this medication as well... i've read that Zinc (while recommended to help with acne) can interfere with the absorption of minocycline. It also makes you much more sensitive to the sun. I'm a lifeguard and when i wasn't using enough sunscreen or avoiding the sunlight while on this medication it actually made my acne worse. You just have to be careful when using it, and use it properly for it to be beneficial.

Pros:

My face is getting better everyday - if this keeps up I'll be 100% clear in a few days.
Worked really fast for me.

Cons:

none so far...

I had mild/moderate acne and my dermatologist put me on this and Duac topical gel, and so far its working great. I havent had any side effects at all. If your dermatologist reccomends this, try it.

Pros:

it worked within...2 days? side effects cleared up...don't have to bother with taking it one hour before meals etc.

Cons:

made me a little nauseated for the first couple weeks i used it. if u dont' have insurance it's expensive

i have moderate acne, and this worked like a charm. Even though it hasn't yet gotten rid of the acne on my back i definatly think it's worth trying!

Pros:

It does help control your acne, i've had no side affects what so ever and I have been on it for over a year.

Cons:

it helps control but I find it doesn't clear it up completely. it is perfect for those suffering from a light acne problem, but those with worse acne should try something stronger.

all these negative side affects stated above are not true. sure it may happen to a chosen few, but the same goes for ANY other drugs. i've been on many MANY acne medications and i have never had a problem. Minocycline works well but if you have a lot of acne i would recommend something stronger. i felt it worked good in the beginning but after a while it starts to not work as well.

Pros:

Starts to clear acne within days. No side effects yet but this forum scares me, so not sure how long I'll stay on...

Cons:

As soon as I stop taking them acne comes back in full force - very frustrating. Damned if you do and damned if you don't...

It does what it says... Clears up acne pretty quickly but you have to stay on them. My dr started me on 100mg 2 x day for first week and then down to once a day. I tried stopping them twice because was scared of developing side effects, but acne returned so I went back on them. I told my concerns to my dr and he said that the severe side effects only happen to a very few out of the thousands upon thousands of people that use this. He assured me that he would check my blood for liver damage and anything else every three months until I decide to stop. So I am scheduled for bloodwork in three months and will stay on Mino at least until then. Will write an update then....

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
