Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

It sucks
February 16, 2008

Pros:

Cleared my ENTIRE face up and I had Severe Acne

Cons:

Weird stomach feeling if you dont eat anything, which is easy to fix if you EAT...

I'm a 16 year old male and I had severe acne until i got on doxy, it took 2 months to clear my whole face and i saw a difference every single day! now all i have is unnoticeable marks where the acne bumps were, and they're healing so fast and you cant really see them unless im under fluorescent lights. If you havent tried this please do and dont waste your time with retnoids... who wants to get worse before better when they can just get BETTER. And it was covered by my health insurance.

Pros:

It seems to work...

Cons:

I seem to get really tired every time I take it. I think I'm going to stop and tell me doctor to give me something else.

might work for you, didn't for me tho, seems kinda risky with all these side effects and all

Pros:

Didn't really work for me. Noticed slight decrease in acne, but still breaking out badly.

Cons:

Upset stomach, antibiotic.

Not worth it for me. But everyone is different, that is why I would still recommend it, cause it might work for you.

Pros:

This reduced the oiliness of my skin which greatly reduced the amount of acne on my face.

Cons:

Possibly caused diarrhoea

Inexpensive and worked well for me.

Pros:

Worked incredibly well with my moderate to severe acne. After a few months on it (with the right cleanser and moisturizer also), my entire face has cleared up. Nothing left but some scars.

Cons:

You will get sick if you take this on an empty stomach or consume a lot of caffeine. Black tea and doxy were a terble combo for me.

Give it a chance. It's cheap. Your face will probably get REALLY bad after the first week or so, but it's only because the medicine is bringing it all out. It'll clear up in time!

Pros:

* side effects are none existant
* tablets go down smooth
* went to the mornington peninsula and tanned like a motha, i know thats not a great thing health wise but im brown all the time lol

Cons:

nothing

aight ive been reading so many bloody reviews about people whinging about how if you dont take it with meals you feel sick and throw up. perhaps these people are stupid or just want to complain, but it says it ALL OVER the bottle "TAKE WITH A MEAL AND WATER"! my doctor even stressed to me that i should always take it with meals and i always have and ive never had nausa from it, ever. even just having a couple of dry biscuits is fine, just always take it with a big glass of water and youre sweet. so people before you go bagging a product, use it like its supposed to be used first. as for those people who are smart enough to take it properly, it works great. im using it with differin and together theyre the perfect treatment, but yeah ive had no side effects and more importantly, i now have no pimples.

Pros:

Acne was gone within 1 week/ 100mg daily

Cons:

excess gas and some nausea/heartburn

It's been the solution to my adult onset acne I was looking for. At age 30 and suddenly having acne issues I was concerned. I tried proactiv, acne-free, etc nothing worked. I do reduce use to 1, 100mg pill every other day in the summer to avoid photosensivity. I use a mild benzoil face wash in the evenings and wear facial lotion (dryness can cause breakouts) during the day. This medication is on the $4 walmart pharmacy list.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
