Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Clears acne within a week and a half

Cons:

Make my stomach slightly upset with food. Makes me vomits uncontrollably without food.

Please Please take this with something i stopped taking it for a while and I decided to start taking it again and this time with out (dumb) food and within 15 min I was vomiting all over the place!

Pros:

Its cheap. I have caremark insurance only cost me 4.50

Cons:

It made me vomit when taken on an empty stomach.

This is the same drug they give to people to keep them from getting malaria! This drug makes me terribly nausea. I cant say for sure if it would help me or not but it just makes me tooo sick to be able to find out. Perhaps i may give it one more shot with food, however the instructions say to take on an empty stomach and wait an hour before eating or take 2-3 hours after eating and that you cant lay down after taking it! I dont know but that sounds like a bit much to me!

Pros:

It took away all of my whiteheads. I found that when I didn't use the doxycycline part of my treatment that i got whiteheads. Reduced my overall acne greatly. (Great for a year!)

Cons:

Stops working after a while, about a year for me. Now I get whiteheads even if i use it. Makes you sick if you dont eat ALOT before taking it.

When I first started it, it made me throw up 4 times before i learned to eat alot of food before taking it. It worked really well for the first year and now it's not working. I'm going to my dermatologist to find somthing else that'll be as effective.

Pros:

it cleared up most of my acne

Cons:

If taken on an empty stomach, you become nauseous. At first my acne got really bad after using this antibiotic but it soon began to clear up.

It works!

Pros:

Easy to take.
Slightly reduced acne.

Cons:

Made me throw up.

Doesnt work well enough to warrant me throwing up every morning

Pros:

It worked well after about 2 -3 months, made my skin clear for about a year.

Cons:

stops working after a year.

It's an antibiotic, so you can't depend on it forever. After the effect became uselss for me, I started getting worse acne than ever before or the same before i tried it. i used it along with a topical prescription cream and rosacea facewash, so there are a lot of factors. but it only kept my skin clear for a little while until it stopped working.

Pros:

Clears skin.

Cons:

Takes about 6 weeks to work.
Nausea if taken on empty stomach.
Can cause esophageal burns if not taken with enough water.

Make sure you take it with a full glass of water. It works well and doesn't make your skin peel like topical creams.

Pros:

Cheap
Easy to take
At my pharmacy, I can get a two week supply for free

Cons:

Don't take on an empty stomach. I tried and it was awful
Honestly I don't think I've seen any improvement with it

I've been taking this for years, and I don't think it's improved my skin at all. The only reason I still take it is because I've seen tremendous improvement in my skin (I started using Proactiv and the Zapzyt acne pack), so I'm afraid to stop taking it. !!!WARNING, THE NEXT FEW SENTENCES ARE GROSS!!! Unlike what they say, take it on a full stomach. When I took it on an empty stomach, I got so sick I actually vomited the pill back up, and I felt terrible the entire day. !!!END OF GROSS PART!!! So make sure you eat before you take it.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne (100mg 1 once a day) with no side effects.

Cons:

none so far

Get the 100mg for 14 days and just keep refilling it because then your pharmacy will give it to you for free!
July 16, 2009

Pros:

used for three days and no new acne, everyday was getting like five, suprised on how fast it is working. have had acne for 7 years, a gift from my daughter

Cons:

throw up almost every morning, having to revolve my meals around taking the pills

finally free, would pay or throw up everyday

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
