Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

no upset stomach
easy pill to swallow

Cons:

in the beginning - joint pains, photosensativity, browning of the teeth

pretty much ive been on this for a little over a month. and its done absolutely nothing at all for my acne ive been eating very healthy and staying far away from my acne triggers, taking this on a completely empty stomach 100 mg twice daily full glass of water just to make sure im doing everything completely right and still no better. as a matter of fact my acne is just getting even more persistent... im going to derm and asking for bactrim next. bottom line if this kicks in finally at the end of the month i will re-review this item. as of right now. it sucks!

Pros:

None really so far, perhaps I haven't been on it long enough (I've just finishing a 2 moth course)

Didn't experience any stomach pains etc that other people have. I think mines has been like toughened since I've been on anti-biotics so long.

Cons:

Acne is only getting worse.

Tomorrow it's likely my derm will prescribe me accutane. I could continue on doxy, but to be honest, I'm tired of being on antibiotics. I've been on them for about a year and a half now and none have yielded any positive results. I think it's time to take the step to accutane, but If you haven't tried any antibiotics yet and are hesitant to try accutane, maybe you should try this or another one or two first, but I just found it a waste of time, and wish I had just started accutane 2 months ago. Though, these things do affect everyone differently, and they may work for you, just not for me.

Pros:

Helped keep acne somewhat to a reasonable level

Cons:

Didnt help cystic acne

I would not recommend this. I get cystic acne that's not horribly severe, maybe one or two a week And this didn't help much

Pros:

gets rid of acne on face and body

Cons:

have to take with food
yeast infection

it took about 2 1/2 months for ALL of the active break outs to go away. I used to get a new pimple at least once a week, (usually more than one). I haven't had any new pimples for about two+ weeks, and the once active ones are just red spots. At first it seems like it's never going to work, but it eventaully does. I just wanted to say that i read about Photodynamic light therapy for acne; for some reason it's not mentioned on this website, but it seems to work really well for people. I haven't done it, but if my acne comes back i am going to; people that have tried it say it works right away, and it lasts. the only down side is that it's expensive.

Pros:

- Clear up skin FAST

Cons:

- Nausea if not taken with medication
- Break out like crazy if you stop taking it

SO worth it, only $8 with insurance. You most definitely will get sick if you take it without eating, and you will break out with acne really bad if you stop taking it. Also, I would sometimes still get cystic acne around time for my period to begin. But all in all, doxycycline has been the BEST acne medication I've ever used. Also, I wash with Johnson and Johnson's Purpose facewash and exfoliate with Johnson and Johnson's Clean and Clear. Both are GREAT!

Pros:

Inexpensive with insurance

Cons:

Doesn't really clear up acne
Sun sensitivity

I was prescribed this medication by my doctor. It was originally prescribed for my acne, but then I was given another prescription for another problem (that has nothing to do with acne). I've been using that last prescription for at least three or four months now, and I've seen no improvement in my acne. It has, however, helped me with my other problem. So I'll give it an extra star for that.

Pros:

Cheap and pills are small and easy to take.

Cons:

Didn't work. Made my face peel and burn. Extreme sensativity to the sun. Made acne worse. Made skin so sensative to the sun that it burnt my hands and fingers and left permanent scars.

Don't waste your time on this product. I was on it for 4 months and never did it really work. The burns are still here and it is october. I started the treatment in March and ended in June.

Pros:

Made redness decrease
Less blackheads
Reduced body acne some

Cons:

Noticeable side effects, like sleep pattern changes and horrible sensitivity to the sun. I am pale to begin with and I had the worst sunburn of my life on my HANDS from one day at an outdoor job. It feels like your skin is on fire whenever you are in the sun. Stomachaches for a solid half hour after taking each pill. Plus there is the fact that I hate taking pills to begin with, and this is a twice a day medication.

I have invested a lot of money into getting rid of acne, and I think this is decent in reducing acne. If you have light acne, it is so not worth it. This reduces my acne but is nowhere near eliminating it, and I take it with a topical treatment as well.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
