Pros:

Easy to take.

Cons:

Nausea
Dizziness

I've been taking it for close to a month. My doctor said i will not see any changes until 3 months, then i will have to continue the use for...2 YEARS! He also put me on a trention acid based cream, which peels the hell out of my face. I have some scars...and a few pimples here and there. I guess it is a little better than before...but im waiting until im a 3 months to really expect anything. If there is still no change, then forget them! make sure you eat with them...!!! I only had an apple with one this morning...and got cold flashes, then threw up.. Other than that...we will see what happens

Pros:

I used doxycycline along with topical creams as prescribed by my derm. By a month or so my acne started clearing up. I was acne free by 3 months.

Cons:

Takes a while. You won't see immediate results.

Works real well for some. I didn't have stomach problems with this. Just make sure you eat something before taking it.

Pros:

Works AMAZINGLY well to clear up my acne.

Cons:

Ate away at the lining of my stomach and almost caused me to have a hole in my stomach-- I was sick for months and in severe pain-- Now have to take new meds for 3 months to get my stomach mostly healed-- there may be long term effects.

I would never ever ever ever use this drug or tell someone to use it. It's great for clearing up acne, but NOT WORTH IT for the amount f pain I was in. I couldn't eat anything for weeks at a time, I threw up anything I ate, my stomach burned constantly, I had to put my entire social life on pause for 1 and a half months. I went to the hospital and the idiots there didn't do enough tests-- my doctor finally diagnosed it and determined what was wrong and got my on the right path. I have to take meds for 3 months, and I'm mentally scarred from the amount of sheer pain I was in. Don't take this drug.

Pros:

Helps reduce inflammation.

Cons:

Does not completely clear acne.

Probably wont work for severe acne on its own.
October 16, 2008

Pros:

I have very bad back acne. I stopped having new breakouts after 3-4 days of taking it. My back has progressively been getting better. I am on my 5th week.

Cons:

The first week, I had dry mouth and was very dehydrated. I was also very lethargic and needed to go to bed very early. During my 3rd, 4th, and 5th week, I have been having really bad constipation and I am still lethargic.

It works but I am not sure if I am going to continue taking it. The price for taking it is just way too much considering it's just back acne that no one sees. My doc wants me to be on this for a whole year. I don't think so.

Pros:

So far, I have taken 100mg once a day for 3 days and i've noticed the size of my pimples/bumps decreasing. Also using Duac cream at night which has worked wonders with drying them out. I would rather have dry, flaky spots than red blistery zits!

Cons:

This is a VERY strong antibiotic. If I don't eat food with it and water all day, I get extremely naseous. At night time..no matter what, I have MASSIVE stomach cramping. I have heard of this causing stomach ulcers so I will only use for a short time

The bottom line is that my doctor prescribed this to me and I am trying it out. Also, my friends mom who is a doctor gives it to her whenever she has a bad breakout as well as giving it to her patients when she needs to operate and they have bad skin that needs repairing. It is corrosive so should not be used as a permanent solution, but definitely worth a shot if you're looking to clear up fast.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
