Pros:

None

Cons:

Hives
Sickness
Chest pain - I was allergic to it.

The first 2 days of taking it I was extremley sick and developed hives on my lower legs. On day 3 I evperienced an allergic reaction. My chest felt like it was on fire, I couldn't breathe properly, I couldn't eat or drink without really bad pain in my chest.

Pros:

Cleared up my face incredibly well; Easy and quick to consume; No side effects; Results are AMAZING if you're patient and use it faithfully

Cons:

Requires a lot of patience since it took about 6 weeks for it to make an incredible difference; My back acne hasn't improved much; I'll probably eventually become resistant to it; Antibiotics aren't too healthy for you

First of all, I want to make it clear that I'm taking Doryx. It's the same thing as Doxycycline except it helps reduce side effects such as nausea. I suffered from moderately severe acne covering my face and upper back for about 6 months and it has been really depressing and embarrassing. I finally visited a dermatologist and he prescribed me with Doryx 150 Mg tablets along with Differin 0.3% gel (I contribute my great results with Doryx.) At first I was skeptical about taking antibiotics but I figured it was worth a shot. I didn't notice much of a difference for the first few weeks however, my acne was slowly and gradually disappearing. But I stayed patient and continued to use it faithfully and consistently. When I made it to my sixth week, my face cleared up amazingly! It seemed like a miracle! I'm so happy and grateful that I went through with this! My face has improved so much! I still have to continue using it because my dermatologist said so. There is hope! Don't be skep

Pros:

That it is cheap with insurance

Cons:

I tried it for awhile, it made me nauseus & it didn't work. I don't like the fact that it causes more harm then it does benefit.

Sucks...

Pros:

None so far.

Cons:

I took 50mg/day for 3 months with no improvement. 2nd opinion from a different Dr increased dosage to 100mg/day plus topical Differin. After another month still no improvement but am prepared to give it 2 more months. Increases photosensitivity!

Increased pigmentation from sun exposure despite being very careful and no positive results.

Pros:

Everything I asked for. The first month and a half I saw NO improvements... but after that... CLEAR skin. I had acne that ranged from mild to moderate (when I had breakouts), but none of that anymore! Try for atleast 3 months before results

Cons:

Obtained these w/out a prescription... and while not that expensive... I realize I can't take it forever. I don't know if I'll refill or not once my supply runs out, because I don't see how I can go back to acne. Has me bummed out.

HIGHLY recommended. No side effects for me, and I take 2 100mg tablets per day (once at day, once at night). I also use Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide once a day each (apply one after taking a tablet), and wash my face 3 times a day. I did the routine minus the doxycycline for years to no avail, so it definately was the doxycyline that made the difference.

Pros:

I'm sure if you are patient it will work.

Cons:

I've been taking it for about 2 weeks I've seen a very slight change not drastic. I think its working but I had another massive spot apper the other day on an area that I don't usually get spots on. I wouldn't hold my breath with this product

I wouldn't hold your breath. I was told by my doctor that I would see the difference in few days but there has not been that much of a difference. Its slowly getting better.

Pros:

Cheap if you have insurance. Easy - just pop a pill 2x a day. I'm on the maximum dosage.

Cons:

Makes me nauseous sometimes, even if I've eaten. First month had heartburn/reflux so bad I considered quitting, now that has gone away.

Has helped me after 3+ months of taking it, my breakouts are much less frequent, less painful and less severe overall, but I'm still not clear like I want to be.

Pros:

Seems to be working (hopefully).. it has been almost on month. I am really hoping that by six weeks I will be clear. I eat it with oatmeal in the morning (no milk) and have not had any side effects.

Cons:

Takes a long time to work.
BIG break out in the first few weeks.

We will see. It is cheap with health insurance. It is convienent to take one pill every morning.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
