Pros:

Clears skin!!!!!

Cons:

Wide array of side effects to look out for

Does make you sick if you take it on a completely empty stomach, but it doesn't work if you eat it with a lot of food. I don't get sick if I take it two hours after eating. Also make sure you sit up for a half hour after taking it, I didn't and it caused a stomach ulcer. The ulcer cleared up quickly after I started following instructions. Once I started following all the instructions the doxycycline started working really well, and I haven't had any side effects. I just wouldn't recommend taking the pill and then going on a long run, it will cause the nausea side effect to kick in VERY strongly.

Pros:

clears acne

Cons:

Upsets stomach

I have taken this before and it works well. It did upset my stomach and I don't know when I'm supposed to take it exactly (how many hours before/after eating, no dairy?) does anyone know the specifics? Thanks

Pros:

I've only been on Doxy for 2 weeks but I saw a remarkable improvement in only 5 days. My main gripe was a bunch of small surface pimples on my forehead. Nothing else worked, but Doxy has made them all disappear. Very happy with the effect on my acne.

Cons:

The strict timing of ingesting this med is a hassle. Taken only on an empty stomach, 2 hours after eating and 1 hour before eating makes it challenging but for a clear complexion I will glady do it!

I do get an upset tummy after taking it-not

I've read SO many posts here where people say that take this drug with food. My directions CLEARLY state that this drug must be taken on a completely empty stomach to be effective. I've followed the directions to the letter and take 100mg X2 a day on an empty stomach and have watched my face get better and better with each passing day. I have also read that the results are not permanent for many people - effectiveness sometimes wears off after taking Doxy for a few months. I've only been on it for 2 weeks but even a short reprieve from those pesky pimples is most welcomed. :o)

Pros:

I really have not seen any. Doxycycline 100 mg twice a day

Cons:

I went on it just to fix the tiny pimples on my neck. But after using it my cheek is now crazy. I'm on my last week and I am now taking with food rather than empty stomach. So hopefully it will clear. I think i wont refill it.

I think Minocycline 100mg worked best for me and fast. Watch out when stopping it because you could flare up but it is a lot better than doxycycline . But each person is different. I wont be refilling it. I think stress breaks us all out. We need to stop trying so many things. We need patience!!!!! :) Drinking a lot of water, exercise stress free and tea tree oil for skin is good. If anyone has any new suggestions please let me know.

Pros:

It has helped a lot with my acne i have used it in the past for other cases not necessarily acne.

Cons:

It's really rough on the stomach if not taken with food.

It really helped with my acne, but it wasn't prescribed for it. I have taken it for walking pneumonia for the two times i had it and imagine my surprise when it did clear my acne up. It also helps for walking pneumonia:D

Pros:

Started to work within a week. Noticed I was breaking out less and when I did they were not as big as before.

Cons:

The fact that it is an antibiotic and do not need to use it for an extended period of time. Also makes you sick if not taken with food.

It is a good stepping stone to the next course of treatment for my acne. I am glad that is has worked thus far, however, I am only taking it for 8 weeks. I hope that my derm and I can continue to progress with whatever he describes me next. But it doesn't hurt to try.

Pros:

It cleared my face up

Cons:

LOTS of red acne type little bumps on chest and arms!!! Mostly on days I was in the sun!!!

Almost everyone I know has had some type of reaction to this medication. I tried it (hoping for the best) and I will NEVER take it again. I only took it for 8 days and I have been off for 2 weeks. last weekend I was in the sun for about an 1/2 hour total and the next couple of days they got worse. The following weekend I was out for about the same amount of time and I got them again even worse!!! I have been off for two weeks and I still cant go in the sun at all!!! The medication is not worth it one bit. Apparently, it just way too hard on my body! The bumps are on my upper chest and arms (pretty much where the sunlight was). Its sad that I cant go in the sun for 30 mintues without have a reactions for several days. I am a Florida girl and my skin was quite used to the sun before this medication. Also, if you do take it drink plenty of water and eat a meal when you take it. The cost was $13.00 before insurance and I paid $3 with insurance. Good luck to all!!!

Pros:

Seems to have done it's job well. Acne on back gone very quickly and face improved drastically after only a month. Red marks don't seem to linger anymore but this may not be the drug...

Cons:

Has to be taken with food and can not lie down for half hour after taking it or you will get sick. Got really badly sunburnt (use extra caution outdoors). It's not a long term solution (based on past anti-biotic experiences)

I was prescribed this to take as Malaria prevention for an overseas trip. Before the trip I had been prescribed Roaccutane for my acne. It was orginally bummed because I had to wait a month or so before being able to start Roaccutane as you can get very sick if you take Doxy and Roaccutane at the same time. With two weeks left of Doxycycline I have been very impressed at what it has done for my acne. Things look fantastic. A very nice suprise as I was originally angry about having to wait for Roaccutane so I could take this and prevent Malaria. I have been on antibiotics before though and know that they aren't a long term solution. That is why I am still going to do my four month course of Roaccutane after the doxy finishes. Hopefully though being this clear before starting that will help the process and finally get rid of acne for good!

Pros:

Inexpensive, face is clearer than before

Cons:

rough on the stomach, still get blemishes

I get a bottle with 100 pills for about $16 at walmart without insurance. So don't be fooled by places like Rite Aid that wanted to charge me $60. I never really got super bad acne until about a year or two ago and my lite to moderate acne went to being moderate to severe. With this medication it helps to keep my breakouts more towards the lite to moderate side. I've been taking this stuff for almost a year and I've noticed during that time of the month or during high stress times the medicine doesn't seem to work. I used to take the medicine in the morning, but if I don't eat a heavy enough meal the medication makes me want to throw up. Then I'm in bed for half an hour in the fetal position waiting for the pain to go away. I now take it before I go to bed and I don't get any discomfort.

Pros:

none

Cons:

Caused severe acne on my face.

I was prescribed this med for a problem with my eyelid. The doxy cleared up my eye irritation but has caused tonnes of acne on my face. My forehead and cheeks are covered in small pimples and it is driving me mad. I was very surprised to read on this site that this medication is prescribed for clearing up acne. And my eye irritation has since returned. I have been on this for 6 weeks and do not wish to continue.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
