Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Cheap, easy to ingest,

Cons:

Nauseating if you don't eat a meal with the pill.

Don't take with dairy or minerals because they will decrease the absorbtion of doxycline into your body. Overall, my face got worse during the first two weeks. Now it's the third week and im seeing some improvement. Less inflamation, and the bigger zits are faded and not as irritated.

Pros:

I started seeing results within a week. My skin isless blotchy, bumpy, and inflamed already.

Cons:

None, really. Mild constipation so far.

I recommend this for anyone suffering from rosacea acne or perioral dermatitis. If you take it as directed, you're not even going to feel anything out of the ordinary. I've only been on it for 7 days and am supposed to stay on it for 2 months, but the results were really fast. My skin was a total disaster with inflamed perioral dermatitis and rosacea acne. I mean, really gross, painful stuff. 7 days into the doxy treatment and it is all but gone. I am still a little blotchy, but it's faded to the point where you can't really tell unless you're up close. And even then it's not so bad. I hope it continues working this way. I have also eliminated all makeup products/creams containing known allergens/irritants (parabens, SLS, etc) and have replaced my face wash and moisturizer with all-natural, all-organic products. The difference has been huge, and I also recommend doing this in addition to the doxy treatment. I am also using it in conjuction with

Pros:

Completely cleared up my acne -- I wasn't breaking out at all while on it. I was on it for three months and after the first couple weeks probably only had three or four pimples the entire duration.

Cons:

Doctor took me off it during the summer and moved me to a cream as she said that it can cause skin sensitivity and severe sunburn during the summer. I started breaking out again once off it.

Worked great for me, no side effects. It was great not having to worry about my skin at all.. just take a pill when I got up and went to bed and enjoy 100% clear skin. Insurance covered it 100% so it was quite affordable. =)

Pros:

None!!! It makes NO difference, even after months of use.

Cons:

Women, beware!! I never got a vaginal yeast infection till I used this antibiotic. It was a very difficult infection to get rid of. Also, it made my skin very sun sensitive even though my skin is tan.

This stuff is worthless.

Pros:

generic doxycycline is VERY cheap, works pretty quickly for the duration that I've taken it

Cons:

Once you stop taking it, it stops working (obviously), and there are cons to being on long term antibiotic therapy. Increases sun sensitivity, also.

I initially used doxy in conjunction with generic retin-a to clear up moderate acne. The combo leaves you very sun-sensitive, but clears zits like a dream. After 30 days, I stopped doxy and just used retin-a to maintain results, although I will get my doxy scrip refilled if I need to get rid of a flare up. It is very effective, cheap, and doesn't have many side effects (at least, it doesn't for me)

Pros:

worked pretty well after the first month until about the 4th month.

Cons:

After i had been on it for about 4 months it just stopped working. Now my acne is almost the worst it has ever been. It always made me really nauseous when i didn't take it right after eating. Never take it in the morning before you eat breakfast.

I really liked it for the first 4 months but after that it didn't really do much for me. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go on it unless you only need it for a few months. If your acne is really bad and you are serious about fixing it, i completely recommend Accutane. It is a lot of work (mostly for girls) but it is totally worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
