Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Been using for almost two weeks. Minor results. Less painful acne. Still have 2 weeks before I see real results

Cons:

Minor stomach pains witin the first week. And a constant feeling of having to use the bathroom. My body got used to the Ned in one week.

I am a medical assistant at a dermatologist office most topical prescriptions do not wrk on patients. Same in my case. Some ppl need to be treated from the inside out. I'm also using retin a microgel it's working out for me so far.

Pros:

AMAZING. clears everything. I have literally not had a any real acne problems or cysts in 4 years.

Cons:

After 3 years I started getting a queazy stomach in the morning if I didn't take with food. Of course with every other skin regimen it takes at least a 2 month "purging" period before it gets better. Makes face sensitive to sun at first so wear spf

Worked extremely well with me. Cleared up all any back acne, chest acne or face acne I had and works awesome with deep acne. took about 5 months for it to be ALL cleared up but I have been on it for 4 years now and I don't even have to worry about zits anymore!

Pros:

Worked quickly

Cons:

Acne returned after I stopped taking the meds.

I took this med for reasons other than acne. After 3 days or so, my guy friends started telling me how nice my face was looking. He didn't know I was on meds. I still had the scars of course, but no cyst or new pimles and such. YOU MUST EAT SOMETHING AT LEAST 10 MINS BEFORE TAKING PILL!!!! I got my prescription filled at walmart, (no insurance) for $6.00.

Pros:

clears up skin in just the first few days.

Cons:

must eat food prior to ingesting doxycycline.

Was prescribed 100mg twice a day, after the second day my skin was clearer and less oily. I've had trouble skin since I was 12. Even after using Accutane, all sorts of prescribed topical creams, herbal vitamins and anything you can think of... I still had trouble skin. Seems like doxycycline has been my only miracle drug. Although I doubt I can stay on this prescription forever but, if need be I will.

Pros:

Easy to take, cheap with insurance, complexion is clear :)

Cons:

can get nauseous if you don't take it with food but I always do.

I get light to moderate acne most of the time but sometimes it can get severe depending on my stress level. I tried microdermabrasion for a year and it worked really well but I had to get it done regularly and if I missed one appointment, they would be back again. I was using glymed's supplies, 5% benzyl peroxide, and toner which had salycylic acid. It was just getting too expensive and I was tired of going to it regularly so I went to see my dermatologist who asked me to take 2 100mg tablets twice a day and I have been taking these for over 2 months now and my complexion is almost clear. I still get one or two but for the most part it is clear and after 2 1/2 years i'm finally happy. I was sick of applying all that stuff to my face every morning and night and I had dryness sometimes! My dermatologist also gave me the dual topical treatment with clindamyacin and benzyl peroxide but I used it only in the beginning. I hope I won't have to take this medication for too long...

Pros:

Cleared up Acne, prevents malaria

Cons:

caused anxiety/depression

I was on doxy for 2+ years from age 11-13. I eventually switched to minocycline, which was a better fit and provided a better solution for my moderate acne. While on it, I experienced major depression and anxiety but never realized that the medication could have been the cause. Last year I switched back to prevent malaria on a trip to africa and found myself feeling more anxious and depressed. Upon discontinuing the medication, all symptoms of anxiety and depression stopped. Depression is not listed as a reported side effect of doxycycline, but it was a distinct side effect for me and I wouldn't take it again for acne or malaria. The negative mood alteration was too huge a price to pay.

Pros:

It works well and i havent seemed to get a zit since ive been using it and for a little i was going through a stage where i was getting a zit a day. Here's my combo for treating my acne. 1. take a doxycycline. 2.moisturize. 3. benzoyl peroxide.5.slee

Cons:

uhhm people say you ge stomach ache's, but i havent really had any.

i would get it persribed to you by your doctor or derm. it seems to be working for me so far, not right a away this is my second day so obviously not right away especially since i use benzoyl peroxide, it dries up my skin, but the pharmacist says it takes 7-10 days to work and i have a 3 month supply, so imma be taking it until my forehead acne goes away its the worst in my opinion because i hate those little bumps on my forhead and is noticeable. so for all my forhead acne getters hang in there im 16 and just experiencing and its changing my life, i really dont want to do anything out dorrs anymore. have hope, drink a lot of water and take doxycycline i guess is my advice.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Very Pricey!! Even with discount card that came with it. I have been on this for a week and am stopping it. It makes me dizzy, sick to my stomach, and i get a case of the sweats. Another reason-more personal-I don't like taking Antibiotics

If you fell comfy with taking Antiboitics, try this and hopefully it works for you, but I must worn you, google it first and read what it is really for. Then decide. It will dry out your skin within days of starting. Start with a low dose then if need, work up. Its geared more for serve acne vs mild, moderate.

Pros:

Easy to swallow
Small tablet (50 mg)

Cons:

Made me dizzy first days
Nausea

I've only been on this for a week but it has already dried up these two nodules I had in about 2 days right after I started using it. It's very easy to swallow and I learned that if you eat some crackers ( like ritz) after you take the medicine, it helps settle your stomach. I'm ok 50 mg btw.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
