Pros:

I used doxycycline along with topical creams as prescribed by my derm. By a month or so my acne started clearing up. I was acne free by 3 months.

Cons:

Takes a while. You won't see immediate results.

Works real well for some. I didn't have stomach problems with this. Just make sure you eat something before taking it.

Pros:

I have very bad back acne. I stopped having new breakouts after 3-4 days of taking it. My back has progressively been getting better. I am on my 5th week.

Cons:

The first week, I had dry mouth and was very dehydrated. I was also very lethargic and needed to go to bed very early. During my 3rd, 4th, and 5th week, I have been having really bad constipation and I am still lethargic.

It works but I am not sure if I am going to continue taking it. The price for taking it is just way too much considering it's just back acne that no one sees. My doc wants me to be on this for a whole year. I don't think so.

Pros:

almost immediately resolved my large cystic acne.

Cons:

hasnt completely cleared all of my acne.

this was my first try at an oral medication used specificaly to treat my acne; for years, ive used OTC cleansers and creams. after the second day i noticed that most of the large, cystic acne on my body drastically improved. but, i have yet to see all of my acne disappear - i havent had a "breakout" since taking this medication. ive been pretty cautious about taking it (ive read some of the "horror" stories on here). ive only been taking it once a day (as opposed to twice). i try to not take it after ive just eaten a large meal because of what others have said about nausea, but personally, i havent felt ANY of those effects...or headaches, lightheadedness, etc. ive been side-effect-free! i will eventually take the medication twice a day in hopes that it will clear all of my acne, but im afraid that i will eventually develop a resistance to the antibiotic and will be stuck with all of my acne again.

Pros:

works quickly

Cons:

expensive, have no ins.

After two weeks, can see a huge difference. In a lot of pain during breakouts, which were constant since summer and turning 40...no nausea....feel great. The only other topical I use is a free sample from the dermo., and an occasional dab of tea tree oil....wash with neutrogena soap.

Pros:

noticed its reduced redness, since ive been using it for about 2 weeks

Cons:

takes time to work, stomach aches etc.

have dinner then take tablet and only drink water for the rest of the night. dont wash your face if you can help it ive noticed the med works quicker if you dont put any washes on it, splash of water at the most. Be patient, be excited i believe in this :) good luck

Pros:

I think it helped alot with my back acne, but since I used the pill and started using dermalogica all at the same time I'm not totally sure which one did the trick, how ever I have totaly cleared up now with only a bit of scarring left...

Cons:

I think it was giving me headaches and making me feel sick but it could of been the pill... Other then that I think you have to be on it for a while which is a bit annoying

Its worth it to give it a try, if that doesnt do the job your dermatoligist or docter can help you.

Pros:

After I stopped taking it, I didn't have any major breakouts for about 2 weeks!

Cons:

It didn't work and it got annoying after the first couple of weeks.

The instructions say that it is more effective on an empty stomach, but it WILL cause headaches and stomach aches if you do that, so eat a very minimal amount (a cracker or piece of fruit). The pills get very annoying to take because you have to take them an hour before eating and at least 2 hours after eating. And your not supposed to have any dairy products within 2 hours of it. I had to regulate my entire eating pattern to make sure the pills were as effective as possible. In the end it still didn't work. I still broke out just as much. Thankfully I had pretty much NO side effect...although it did make my throat dry and thirsty. I was on it for 2 months and my skin acted as though I wasn't even on it. It didn't clear me up at all (not even a little) Once I stopped taking it, it seemed like my skin got a little better for a little while. That didn't last long though!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
