Pros:

No dry scaly skin
Easy to treat acne all over your body
Effective

Cons:

Cannot continue treatment for more than 6 months
Results in an upset stomach if taken on an empty stomach

With other acne treatments I have had which were always a topical medication, it was a pain to treat my entire torso and face. If I did regularly stick to treating all my acne prone areas, then i would run out of product very quickly. Doxycycline was easy because all i needed to do was take a pill and it solved acne problems everywhere on my body. It also didn't give me dry scaly skin that I always seem to get with other treatments. My face cleared up very quickly and my skin became very clear. My back took a bit longer, maybe about a month or two. I did experience a sore stomach once or twice, but that really was my fault because I didn't have it after a proper meal. The major downside is that I cannot continue the treatment. As an antibiotic, its hard to get it prescribed again. Even if i did, there is the possibility that the bacteria causing the acne will grow resistant to treatment.

Pros:

Kept Back Acne Under Control (which was cystic)
Reduced Inflammation everywhere (face and back)
Helped my roosacea (by reducing redness)

Cons:

Threw up from taking on empty stomach
Can upset stomach
Not the best on immune system

I took this over the summer. It helped I'd say. I has nice clear skin for months. When the fall came; however, I had a major breakout (tiny bumps, very red, all around center of face). So, it didn't help with that. At least I wasn't getting the bigger pimples though. I couldn't continue because of insurance issues, but when I did, I didn't have to pay.

UGH I HATE THIS STUFF!!

Pros:

-quite a big improvement in skin complexion
-less oily face throughout the day
-fairly quick results
-reduction in acne
-reduces redness / inflammation
-increased my confidence

Cons:

-can't take antibiotics forever

Just 4 days into doxycycline, i can already see an improvement in my skin with less rednes and inflammation and my complexion looking a whole lot better than before. I was prescribed 50mg taken 2x daily for 3 wks and 1x daily after 3 wks. Now, I know you can't stick with antibiotics forever, so while our acne may improve in the course of our doxycycline, we shouldn't abandon a healthy diet, hygiene and proper skin regimen. So far, I have not suffered any side effects. I take doxycycline immediately after breakfast and dinner with a full cup of water. For all those with acne, I recommend getting a prescription from your doctor, but remember THIS IS NOT THE SAVIOUR OF YOUR ACNE. Yes, it may drastically improve your condition, but be sure to still treat your skin with proper care. Good luck!!

Pros:

clears acne
prevents breakouts
reduces redness

Cons:

horrible stomach aches
takes a very long time to work
will make acne worse at first

ive been on this stuff for almost 2 months exactly, and i gotta say its really starting to work for me. ive been taking 2 100mg pills a day. initially, my acne was getting worse, but i found out that was only because the medicine is removing all the bacteria from under my face, so it is being brought to the surface. i was starting to get confused because it would reduce breakouts, but then knew ones would come in its place, so my face was just a red mess. but i decided to stick with it, and now i see my skin improving greatly! my red spots are beginning to fade, and my breakouts have been reduced greatly. even when i get a pimple, it is much smaller and less noticeable and goes away much quicker. i highly recommend this medication though taking this medication with food and water is a MUST! ive had two occasions where i took on an empty stomach and both times i ended up throwing up.but having your confidence back and clear skin far outweighs the side affects, just dont forget to take with food

Pros:

No side effects (except I feel a little tired always)

Cons:

Just plain didnt work

My dr prescribed this for acne that was not being kept under control by Differin and benzaclin. It didn't make any difference, dr said the bacteria are probably resistant. Trying minocycline next. I would recommend giving it a shot, since it seems to work for most people, and there are minimal side effects (do not however take it on an empty stomach no matter what the bottle says)

Pros:

Helped keep acne somewhat to a reasonable level

Cons:

Didnt help cystic acne

I would not recommend this. I get cystic acne that's not horribly severe, maybe one or two a week And this didn't help much
March 13, 2012

Pros:

Prevents cysts, shrinks existing ones.

Cons:

Irritating to stomach

Been using it for 3 years. I have not developed a tolerance to it yet because I will break out if I discontinue use. Twice a day. VERY irritating to stomach: must be taken with food.

Pros:

Clears skin from the inside out.

Cons:

A little tough on the stomach at first.
Takes some time to work.

I have been fighting back acne (BACNE) for years. I have always been using the topical medications, they did somewhat work but not good enough. So after I got good health insurance from my work, I went to a very good dermatologist in my area. I really wanted to get on Accutane so bad because I was desperate. However the doctor strongly suggested that I try Doxy first. So I listened to him. After 3 weeks I have to say that my back acne was 60% gone! I did get some minor random breakouts at first, but they quickly healed. Today I am in my 5th week and my back is 90% clear. I am satisfied with this medicine so far. MY ADVICE ON HOW TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE TO AVOID NAUSEA/VOMITING : TAKE IT SHORTLY AFTER A GOOD MEAL. You will be fine, trust me. The only thing I am worried about is if I get pulled off this medicine, I really hope the acne wont come back. TRY THIS medicine before Accutane.

Pros:

Amazing stuff. This antibiotic is simply superb! Within two days my acne started to clear up and now (two weeks later) I don't have a pimple on my face!

I've tried various pills (yasmin, dianne) which work okay.. but never give amazing results. I've also tried other antibiotics (bactrim, mino) which just didn't work at all.

Cons:

Upset stomach/ headache if taken on an empty stomach or just before lying down. I take 1 pill (100mg) a day just after lunch and never have any problems.

Try it! Seriously. I thought it would take at least a month to work but it's cleared me up instantly! I also use in conjunction with yasmin, but that wasn't doing much for me and I've been on it for over 6 months now. My acne (light/moderate) was really getting me down to the point where I didn't even want to leave the house for work or uni. Thanks to doxy I'm now acne free and just have a few red spots I need to get rid (probably with microdermabrasion). Highly recommended!!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
